If you are sending a text message watching TV or listening to the radio, you may stop and give this your full attention. Multitasking shrinks (使.....萎缩)the brain? research suggests.
A study found that men and womenwho frequently used several types of technology at the same time had less grey matter in a key part of the brain. University of Sussex researchers said, " Using mobile phones, laptops and other media devicessimultaneouslycould be changing the structure of our brains."
Worryingly, the part of the brain that shrinks is involved in processing emotion. The finding follows research which has linked multitasking with a shortened attention span, depression , anxiety and lower grades at school.
The researchers began by asking 75 healthy men and women how often they divided their attention between different types of technology. This could mean sending a text message while listening to music and checking e-mail, or speaking on the phone while watching TV and surfing the Internet. The volunteers were then given brain scans which showed they had less grey matter in a region called the anterior cingu-late cortex (ACC)(前扣带皮层).Scientists have proved that brain structure can be changed on exposure to fresh environments and experience.
Other studies have shown that training—such as learning to play magic tricks or taxi drivers' learning the map of London―can increase grey matter densities (密度)in certain parts.
Experts have also warned of the harmful impact technology can have on our memory and attention span. The University of California team conducted a survey of more than 18,000 people aged between 18 and 99,and found 20%had problems with memory. Researchers were shocked greatly by the 14 % of 18 to 39-year-old people who also worried about their memories.
Multitasking may shorten attention span, making it harder to focus and form memories, the researchers said, adding that youngsters may be particularly affected by stress.
1. The underlined word " simultaneously" in Paragraph 2 means "________,"

A new study suggests drinking coffee as soon as someone wakes up from a poor night’s sleep greatly affects metabolism(新陈代谢) and blood sugar control.
In the study, published in theBritish Journal of Nutrition, UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take part in three different overnight experiments. In the first two scenes, participants were given a sugary drink uponwaking—first from a normal night’s sleep, and then again after a poor night’s sleep during which they were woken up for five minutes every hour. In the third, their sleep was similarly disrupted, but they were given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary drink, which mirrored the calories of a typical breakfast, in each experiment. Results showed that one night of disrupted sleep did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast increased the blood sugar response by around 50 percent.
By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers found that our bodies’ ability to break down our food healthily is completely improved. Examining the effects of broken sleep and morning coffee across a range of different metabolic markers, scientists at the University of Bath found that, while one night of poor sleep had a limited effect on metabolism, drinking coffee before breakfast could have a negative effect on blood sugar control.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee—the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee is. This simple study is important and has far-reaching health influences, and it indeed moves some coffee drinkers’ heartstrings. As up to now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control, so we have a long way to go.” said Professor James Betts, co-director of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism at the University of
Bath.
4. How did UK researchers get the result of the experiment?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By consulting journals.
C. By questionnaire.
D. By assumption.
5. What can we learn from the experiment?
A. One night of poor sleep surely affects blood sugar.
B. Drinking coffee after breakfast does harm to health.
C. Having strong drinks has a good effect on metabolism.
D. Drinking coffee at different time has different effects on health.
6. What does James Betts think of the study?
A. It makes no sense.
B. It remains to be continued.
C. It is limited and blind.
D. It is particular and explicit.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How Much Coffee to Drink Matters
B. Does Coffee Really Wake Up an Appetite?
C. How Does Drinking Coffee Affect One’s Sleep?
D. Drinking Coffee before Breakfast Harms Metabolism
C
When Alex Linwas 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper, which said that people were burying old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into streams, and dumping (丢弃) cell phones in the garbage. This was dangerous because e-waste contains harmful chemicals that can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies and people.
Alex was really worried and decided to make it next project for WIN-the Westerly Innovations Network. Alex and six of his friends had formed this organization to help solve community problems two years before.
But what could they do about this project with e-waste? The team spent several weeks gathering information about the harmful chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose(处置) of e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. Then, they sent out a Survey and found only one in eight know what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it.
Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days,
and they collected over 9, 500 kilograms of e-waste. The next step was to set up a long-term e-waste drop-off center for the town. After some research, they’d learned that reusing is the best way to deal with electronic devices and it is seven times more efficient than recycling. So, they began learning to retrofit (翻新) computers themselves and distributed them to students who didn’t have their own. In this way, they could help students in the area and protect the environment at the same time.
For a lasting solution to e-waste, the drop-off center wasn’t enough. Lawswould have to be passed. In 2016, WIN helped push for an e-waste bill in their town, which required companies that manufactured or sold electronics to take back e-waste. The bill clearly forbids the dumping of e-waste. Because of the work of WIN, more and more people, like Alex and his team, are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s harmful garbage.”
8. What was Alex’s worry after he read the article?
A. The littering of e-waste.
B. The recycling of plastic.
C. The change of environment.
D. At 11 p.m. on Monday.
9. What did Alex do to start the project?
A. Set up WIN.
B. Collect information.
C. Ask friends for help.
D. The overuse of old computer.
10. Which can best describe the way Alex and his team did their work?
A. Traditional.
B. Competitive.
C. Scientific.
D. Convenient.
11. What message does the story convey?
A. There is no end to perfection.
B. success comes through failure.
C. Every positive attitude has a reward.
D. young people can make a big difference.

Texas has been one of the most restrictive gun-rights states in America. Thanks to a new law, however, the state will be one of the most relaxed,to the degree that police are discouraged from even asking about someone's guns. And if they do, they may not have much power to do anything if the person refuses to show a license.
To be sure, the law is strict in its own way, offering a model for regulation. Under the law, open-carry citizens have to be licensed, a process that includes safety and shooting tests. They also have to show no prior psychological problems, and they have to be at least 21 years old.
It is true that gun violence dropped sharply after restrictive laws were put in place in countries like Great Britain and Australia. However, the US public seems more interested than ever in weapons and the power they
convey, despite gun control groups' concern over the increase of violence. Most states in America have steadily expanded gun rights since the end of a 10-year assault(攻击)weapons ban in 2004. Black Friday this year saw the biggest gun cache(贮存)ever purchased in one day.
Considering those trends, there's a heated debate about whether the new Texas law is a model piece of legislation(立法)for a changing America,or a walking disaster just begging for trouble. As the law doesn't provide any punishment for those who refuse to show a license to a police officer, critics fear that officers may find it tough to handle potentially deadly situations. After all, armed citizens will no longer be considered suspicious, even though a lot of people might be alarmed by the sight. Most police in Texas have been told to not engage gun carriers unless they are doing something questionable or appear drunk.
For sure,New Year's Day will be an exciting one for Texas gun owners. What's not yet known is how the rest of Texas will respond.
12. All of the following are required in the new Texas law for open carry EXCEPT
A. age limit
B. mental condition
C. online registration
D. gun-operating skills
13. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. The reason for putting forward the new Texas law.
B. The present situation of gun possession in America.
C. The impact of the assault weapons ban in 2004.
D. The inaction of the US government as to gun control.
14. What do critics think the new Texas law will probably lead to?
A. Heavier workload for policemen.
B. Disrespect for officers.
C. Lack of trust among citizens.
D. Difficulty in crime prevention.
15. What is the author's attitude towards the new Texas law?
A. Negative.
B. Cautious.
C. Indifferent.
D. Approving.

One year ago, I was in great trouble. I work hard at English and devoted all my spare time to practise it. But I failed to pass the mid-term exam, which made me great disappointed. So I asked my grandpa for suggestions when I got to home. Hear what I told him, he said, “Exam results are sometime unexpected . You can't judge your progress by one examination.” He encouraged myself to work hard for long time to check my results. I took my grandpa's advices. Now I realize that the process of learning is much more important and my English is more better than before. From my experience, I feel that we should listen to opinions from old people.
第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Twenty years ago, Chase Poust was only 7. On Sunday morning just before the Memorial Day, he, his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River, which was trackless and almost nobody knew about it. And there's no rescue center nearby. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板) fishing.
It was a perfect outing- it was so peaceful and quiet and the color1 s of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

An hour later, Chase swam to the shore, anyhow.
