Studies show that smoking is bad for a person’s health. Even being around a person who is smoking can be harmful to one’s health. It is called “second- hand smoke”. Smoking is very bad for children. It may become illegal in California for a person to smoke in a car when children are present.
The California Senate is considering a bill(议案)that would make it a crime to smoke in the car when children are inside. This bill, which would be called SB7, was raised by a Democratic Senator from Long Beach. The Senator thinks that it can
protect children’s health and that anyone who breaks the law should be fined $100 for each action. She believes that this would make people think twice about smoking when children are in the car.
However, some people do not like this bill. They say that it gives the government too much control over what people choose to do. A Republican Senator from Grass Valley does not support the bill. He says that he knows smoking can be dangerous and won’t allow anyone to smoke in his car when his grandchildren are inside. But he does not think
it’s necessary for the government to tell people what they can or cannot do i n their homes or cars. It’s the parents who have the right to decide. He believes that this bill infringes on parents’ rights.
The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has not said whether he would sign the bill to make it a law or not. But when he was asked what he thought about adults smoking in cars when children were inside, he said that he thought it was terrible.

When a baby is seven months old he or she can already feel, hear, taste, smell and see. As a new mother, you should know that your child
is ready to learn about the world from birth.
Touch. One of the most important means a mother has of communication with her baby is touch. Babies enjoy gentle touch and rhythmic(有节奏的)movement. While inside the mother, the baby is used to being rocked by the mother’s movements. After birth, the same rocking movements comfort him or her. Crying babies are often quieted by being put close to the mother’s body and gently rocked. Even the most common activities—feeding, bathing, or walking with the baby in your arms—improve the baby’s sense of touch and movement.
Smell and Taste. Even at birth, babies show that they can tell apart different kinds of smells by turning away from unpleasant ones. They quickly learn to recognize familiar smells, especially their mothers’. And although their taste organs aren’t completely developed, they can tell sweet from sour, and much prefer the former.
Hearing. A baby listens to your voice, your heartbeat, breathing, and so on. When his or her head is pressed against your chest, those familiar sounds are comforting, and many babies like to fall asleep in this position. You may notice that higher-pitched(音调)voices are more pleasant to babies, so men should raise the pitch of their voices when speaking to them. As a baby becomes able to control his or her head movements, it becomes clear that he or she can correctly recognize the places of sounds. Loud, sharp noise often upsets babies, while soft, rhythmic noise calms them down. Music boxes, toys that make pleasant sounds and soft music stimulate(激发)babies hearing.

After a year in the US, I have learned some interesting American expressions. When I am facing a lot of pressure at work, my back and
neck would start to hurt. I have too many things to do, because my boss is on my back all the time. In other words, my employer(雇主)is always telling me to do a lot of things.
So sometimes I want my employer to get off my back. I cannot say this, I would never turn my back on her or refuse to help when there is a need. If I did refuse to help, my boss might say bad things about me behind my back. Sometimes then I am very active and successful in my job, my employer gives me a pat on the back. She might even say, “I will scratch(挠) your back, if you scratch mi ne.” This means she will do something for me if I do something helpful for her in exchange.
I know that my employer carries a lot on her shoulders. She is responsible for many things at the office. Being important, she often rubs shoulders with the top officials. She spends time with some very important people. I believe the top official values my boss. He never gives her the cold shoulder. He always treats her to be an important
part of the organization.
I also value my boss. In fact I think she is very effective in her job. We are always ahead of others in the yearly sales. But it is
not necessary for me to praise my superior. So I think I will just save my breath because talking or repeating will not do any good.
32. When your parents make you do many challenging jobs, you may tell them to .
A. turn their back on you
B. get off your back

B. the writer likes to judge people
C. the writer doesn’t admire her boss
D. the writer seldom falls behind in the yearly sales
35. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To talk about the writer’s attitude towards her boss.
B. To explain some American expressions related to body parts.
C. To tell readers about the writer’s work experiences.
D. To introduce the relationship between the writer and her boss.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
Making Friends
One important thing to remember when trying to get along with others is to compromise. This means that when you and your friend talk about something you do not agree on, one or both of you agree to give up something to find a solution. 36 , but your friend wants to watch DVDs
at home. You think
watching DVDs is boring and agree that you will go shopping for an hour and a half, and then watch one DVD at home. 37 , but you also do something you do not like very much, in order to make the other person happy.
38 . When someone is talking to you, look at them, not at other things or people around you. 39 . Listen to him carefully. Also, pay attention to your friends’ feelings. If a friend is telling you about a difficult problem, ask him, ‘How do you feel about that?’ Many times, what our friends need is not your advice but someone who will listen to them and understand their feelings.
Finally, it takes time and energy to build good relationships with others. You cannot expect to become good friends with someone soon after you meet them. You also cannot expect to become good friends with someone if you do not spend time with them. Invite friends to do things with you, such as watching films, going to the park or even cooking. 40 .
A. To listen to others is another important thing to remember
B. In this way, both of you can do something you like to do
C. You want to go shopping one afternoon
D. Do not laugh at them
E. In this way, you can find common interests with others
outside of school and work.
F. Do not interrupt them!

Possible version:
Dear Kate,
After reading your letter, I know that you worry about making friends. You are very shy, are not very confident and feel like you
stick out from the group because you are very tall.
Do not worry Kate. First of all, you should realize that there is nothing wrong with being short. You
should like yourself for who you are. In fact, many short people have made great contributions to the society. In my opinion, you are shy because you are not very confident. Learn to be brave and try to communicate more with your classmates. Smile at them first, and then try to start a conversation with them. You will find that your classmates are really nice people and they also like to make friends with you. Good luck in making friends.
Best wishes!

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film - it wanted somebody as well known as Paul - he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other - but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心)of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the brief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back - he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ag o. He’d been in zxx.k and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was,and we didn’t talk about it.Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.

Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle-named the Transition – has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and bums 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.
Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise。
