There is a very special wolf that lives in Africa. It is called the African wild dog. These animals live in open woodlands,or in the plains of Africa. Today most of these animals can be found in eastern or southern Africa。
These animals are beautiful. They have rounded ears and have four toes on each of their four feet. Their fine fur is always different from each other。
The fur usually has different colors,so they are also called “the painted wolf". African wild dogs live in groups that number from five to about twenty. The members of a group are always very close to one another。
They communicate with their language or body language。
When someone is very old or sick, the others will help, and they are willing to share the food with the elderly and with those who are weak。
The family does everything together, from raising young to hunting. When they hunt, they will work together to kill
large animals。
They also like farm animals. This is unfortunate because they are often shot because of that. Today, there are very few African wild dogs in the wild. In the past, there used to be many large groups throughout the land。
They are also becoming fewer because of the loss of their living places。
18.How many toes does an African wild dog have in total?
A.4. B.16. C.20。
19.What will the other African wild dogs do when someone is sick?

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和D)中,选出最佳选项。

When you think of an artist, you probably think of someone painting on canvas (画布). But Guido Daniele creates fantastic paintings of birds, elephants, tigers, and giraffes by painting on skin。
Born in Soverato,Italy,Guido Daniele has been called “Hand Gogh" (after artist Vincent van Gogh) since he began creating works of art on people's hands in 1990。
Painting on the hands can be a challenge because, unlike canvas, the skin moves when rubbed. Daniele's models must remain perfectly still for hours as he paints。
He often uses his daughter and his son as his “canvases".Before he can begin to create his “manimals” (the
artist’s name for his hand animals),Daniele studies photographs of the animal that he will be painting in order to be able to understand its character and give it life.“Next,” he says, “I look at the hand from different perspectives (视角),and I begin to imagine what is the best way to position the hand for me to paint the animal.” He also studies the skin of the model, preferring it to have little hair and few blemishes (瑕疵).
Daniele starts by drawing on the model’s hand with a pencil. He next paints the skin using watercolors made specifically for body art. The eyes of Daniele's painted animals look amazingly real, and they are the most difficult part to paint。
Paintings on hands must eventually be washed away。
Guido Daniele says that he's gotten used to this part and that he doesn’t really mind seeing his work washed down the drain (排水沟).“Tomorrow,I will paint the next one。
The important thing is to take many good
photographs before washing the hand!”

A new study has found that it may be possible to train people to be more intelligent, increasing the brainpower they had at birth.
Until now,it has been widely assumed that the kind of mental ability that allows us to solve new problems without having any relevant previous experience —what psychologists call fluid intelligence - is innate and cannot be taught (though people can raise their grades on tests of it by practicing).
But in the new study, researchers describe a method for improving this skill, along with experiments to prove it works。
The key, researchers found, was carefully structured
training in working memory - the kind that allows memorization of a telephone number just long enough to dial it.This type of memory is closely related to fluid intelligence,so the researchers reasoned that improving it might lead to improvements in fluid intelligence.
First they measured fluid intelligence of volunteers using standard tests. Then they trained each in a complicated memory task —the child’s card game, in which they had to recall a card they saw and heard。
During the course, they needed to ignore irrelevant items, monitor ongoing performance, manage two tasks at the same time and connect related items to one another in space and time。
The four groups experienced a half.hour of training daily for 8, 12, 17 and 19 days,respectively。
To make sure they were not just improving their test.taking skills, the researchers compared them with control groups that took the tests without the training.
The results, published Monday in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, were striking.Improvement in the trained groups was a lot greater。
Moreover, the longer they trained, the higher their scores were。
All performers, from the weakest to the strongest, showed significant improvement.
“Our results sho w you can increase your intelligence with proper training." said Dr Jaeggi,a co。
author of the paper.“No one knows how long the gains will last after training stops,” he added,“and the experiment’s design did not allow the researchers to determine whether more training would continue to produce further gains."
________。
A.inform the readers of a new study
B.call on people to be trained to increase intelligence C.prove one's born brainpower can be improved
D.tell people the improved intelligence will last forever
解析:选A 主旨大意题.文章在开头提出一项新调查研究结果,然后在下文中对此进行了详细的介绍,由此判断文章目的是向读者介绍一项新的调查结果,选A。
30.The researchers thought the key to improving the intelligence was ________。
A.memorizing telephone numbers

C.training in concentration
D.recalling a card

trainin g in working memory”可知提高智商的关键是训练working memory,故B选项内容正确。
31.The following aspects of the training help increase intelligence EXCEPT ________.
A.ignoring irrelevant items
B.monitoring ongoing performance
C.managing two tasks at the same time
D.using previous experience
解析:选D 细节理解题。

C.compared the four groups with control groups
D.trained the four groups together

When I was 12 years old,I was at a very hard stage in life.I was short and fat, which was bad for a girl,so coordination (协调)was not one of my strongest features。
On the other hand,my mother was a very talented softball player who even acted as my coach。
Night after night, I would try my best to impress“my coach”.Unfortunately,I just felt like a terrible disappointment to my mother.
One summer afternoon, my mother told us we were going to visit Uncle David. Since we lived in an apartment, going to the country was quite a treat. My uncle David always had a way of making me feel special.
When we arrived,my uncle and cousin Jeff were throwing metal rings at two holes in the ground. I was curious about what they were doing so I went over to
watch. Noticing that I was standing there,my uncle asked if I had ever played washers.
Being a “city girl",my reply was that the only“wa shers" I knew were the ones that cleaned clothes. To my embarrassment, Uncle David, chuckling (咯咯笑), explained that the metal rings were called washers。
I was shocked to hear my uncle saying he wanted me to take his place。
He then gave me the washers and gave tips on how to throw better.
Unwillingly, I joined Jeff. Gradually, I found myself not only enjoying but also wanting to win this game。
The washer went into the air and began to fall。
Then a cloud of dust appeared as the washer sank into the hole. My first try!I had actually thrown the washer into the hole!
