It is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.
A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gasemissions (排放).
“There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水库) itself, as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam thatis used for the hydropower generation.” said lissa Ocko, a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down, it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.
“The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir.” added Ocko.
Through their analysis, Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuels. The study is in the journalEnvironmentalScience and Technology.
This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. “But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and solar. So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.
4. How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By conducting experiments.
C. By referring to previous studies.
D. By analyzing causes and effects.
5. What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?
A. Vegetation and soils.
B. Heat and sunlight.
C. Pollutants in the reservoir.
D. Components of the generators.
6. What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?
A The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.
B. Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.
C. Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.
D. Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. Scientists urge an end to hydropower.
B. Hydropower is not necessarily green.
C. Hydropower is worse than fossil fuels.
D. Renewable energy is a complicated issue.

Nina Wygant, 11, sits in front of a long table in a classroom that looks more like a trendy coffee shop than an elementary school classroom. Some of her fifth-grade classmates at Hopewell Memorial Junior High School sit on high-top chairs at counters. Others choose to sit in club chairs or soft bean bags in comfortable. "I like it because it gives us an environment we like or need to settle down and read a book that we would like to concentrate on instead of having desks and being all quiet," said Vivian Garcia, 10. “You can just space out and have your own little area. I find it very amazing that you can pick your own books instead of being told what to read.”
That’s the end goal, said teacher Heather Shadish. Reading has always been a passion for this English language arts and science teacher, a passion she instills(灌输)in her pupils. Back then, in her literature class in graduate school at Chatham University, a professor read aloud the first chapter ofBecause of Winn-Dixieby Kate DiCamillo, a Newbery Medalist. "That was the moment I knew I wanted to some day teach reading. There was a
spark there. I just felt these are the kind of books I need to share with kids ---the books that are going to make them feel something and make them fall in love with reading instead of reading being achore.”
But information in children's workbooks is limited, so they open tablets and connect to Epic - a digital library that's free to educators and librarians, but $7.99 a month for parents — giving kids unlimited access to approximately 35,000 books(both print and audio), quizzes and videos to enhance learning.
“Epic gives students access to information not found in a textbook and presents it in a more interesting way," she said.
8. What does Vivian think of the reading experience?
A. She favors club chairs and free discussion.
B. She feels comfortable to be told what to read.
C. She enjoys the environment and reading choice.
D. She finds it easy to pick a book in a crowded area.
9. What does the underlined word “chore" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Task.
B. Process.
C. Habit.
D. Skill.
10. What can children get from Epic?
A. Free audio books.
B. Tasks on reading levels.
C. Advice from educators.
D. Useful learning resources.
11. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. A Teacher's New Reading Method
B. Pupils' love of Reading Room
C. Options of Teaching Reading
D. Easy Access to Digital Reading

A PhD student inMichigandefended her paper while wearing a skirt madeof rejection letters she received while studying. 29-year-old Caitlin Kirby printed out 17 of her rejection letters — from scholarships, academic journals, and conferences — then folded each one into a fan. She connected them in rows, and by the end she designed the item into a skirt and wore it.
She said that the idea behind her unique clothing item came out of a desire to normalize rejection and take pride in overcoming it. "The whole process of revisiting those old letters and making that skirt sort of reminded me that you have to apply to a lot of things to succeed," she said. "A natural part of the process is to get rejected along the way."
Caitlin's adviser, Julie Libarkin, a professor of earth and environmental science atMichiganStateUniversity, also encourages the acceptance of failure in her students. Libarkin believes it's important for students to get into habit of applying for things, and to get used to the feeling of rejection, so she encourages them to chase after any opportunity that comes their way. If a student doesn't get the grant or the spot in the academic journal, that's okay. They'll still have learned something in the process.
As for Caitlin? Her rejections over the years have led to great things: Since her doctorate, she's won a scholarship to do further research on urban agriculture inGermany.
Currently, she's a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As for what the future holds? "I'm prepared to receive a few more rejection letters along the way," she joked heartily, "Maybe I'll make a longer skirt."
12. What can we learn about Caitlin Kirby's rejection letters?
A. She received 17 rejections in total.
B. 29 of her rejections were from journals.
C. The rejections were connected into a fan.
D. She made some rejection letters into a skirt.
13. What is Julie Libarkin's attitude towards Caitlin's action?
A. Favorable.
B. Ambiguous.
C. Skeptical.
D. Opposed.
14. Which of the following words can best describe Catlin?
A. Creative and considerate.
B. Caring and determined.
C. Optimistic and humorous.
D. Generous and intelligent.
15. Which of the following may Caitlin agree with?
A. Hard work pays off.
B. Education is the entrance to success.
C. Self-respect earns more respect.
D. One needs to normalize failures.

Miss Robinson was the governess (家庭教师) of Mrs. Livingstone's daughters. She lived in the house like a servant. But she was intelligent and well-educated.
One evening, Mrs. Livingstone invited some friends to dinner. She asked fourteen people but one of the guests was unable to come. Thirteen is an unlucky number so she invited Miss Robinson. Miss Robinson hurried to the jewelry shop to get her repaired string of beads for the dinner party. One of the guests was Count Borselli who knew everything about pearls and diamonds. A young lady at dinner called Miss Lyngate was wearing a string of pearls. She was very proud of her pearls and she asked Count Borselli to look at them.
"They're quite nice pearls, "said the Count.
Miss Lyngate had her nose high up in the air, announcing they cost eight thousand pounds.
"Yes, that's the correct price," said Count Borselli in an ordinary voice. And then, he pointed to the pearls on Miss Robinson's neck, "That is a very nice string of pearls." Miss Lyngate's face flushed with anger. She didn't think a governess could wear a valuable string of pearls.
"That string of pearls is worth more than fifty thousand pounds," added the Count,
Miss Lyngate did not believe Count Borselli. He was mistaken. "Miss Robinson," She said in a loud voice. "Are you wearing a very valuable string of pearls?"
All ears were cocked for Miss Robinson's reply. "1 paid Fifteen shillings for these beads, "said Miss Robinson quietly. Miss Lyngate laughed, with a proud expression on her face.
Now everyone in the room was in whisper. A governess with a string of pearls worth fifty thousand pounds? That was not possible. A woman with fifty thousand pounds was a very rich woman.
"But I bought these beads for fifteen shillings," said Miss Robinson again.
"I do not make mistakes," said the Count quietly. "I know the value of pearls."
"A thief? Stolen pearls?" screamed Mrs. Livingstone, trembling with anger.
"There must be something wrong." Miss Robinson thought.
