What are the basic ingredients(要素) of good manners? A strong sense of fairness is one of them.
A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a one-lane (单行小路), unpaved(未铺路的) mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of choking dust(呛人的尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest paved main road. Suddenly, the car ahead stopped at a wider place on the road.
My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and as ked if anything was wrong. “No,” said the other driver. “But you’ve endured my dust so far. I’ll endure yours the rest of the way.”
Another ingredient is empathy(同情). It makes a person see into the mind or the heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book.
A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty. Then the waiter closed it again and turned back. He
pretended(假装)to make a great effort to open the bottle without success. Finally he took it into the kitchen and returned very soon. He told the man that he managed to open it, but only with a tool.
Yet another ingredient is the ability to treat people alike(一视同仁). No matter who he is and what he does, everyone is worth respecting.
41. The driver in the car ahead stopped to ________.
A. repair the car

C. ask the way

B. The Ways to Help Others
C. The Good Manners of Treating Others

If you are planning a trip to France in the future, you should be careful with the roads you take because some of them may just disappear.
The Passage du Gois (格伊斯通道) in France, which is a natural passage first discovered in 1701, connects the mainland of France and a small island called Noirmoutier (努瓦尔穆捷岛). It is about 4.2 kilometers in length. What has made the passage famous is that it periodically (周期性地) floods. Twice a day, it disappears under about four meters of water. The passage is accessible only during low tide which lasts about one hour. People can also drive on the passage half an hour before and after low tide.
Driving on the passage may be dangerous. Some drivers are caught in the tide because they drive at the wrong time. Besides, as the passage is covered with water for most of the day, it is slippery all the time.
To ensure (保证) the safety of drivers and tourists, signs are posted on both ends of the passage to tell people whether the passage is passable or not. There are also
poles (柱子) set along the passage for people to climb up when they are trapped in the water. People are warned to drive slowly and make no stops on the passage. Also, they are not allowed to park on the passage.
Many people visit the Passage du Gois every day. Some of them risk driving on it and others are just interested in watching it disappear underwater and emerge again.
44. What has made the Passage du Gois famous?
A. It is about 4.2 kilometers in length.
B. It floods twice a day.
C. It is a natural passage.
D. It was discovered earlier.
45. Why is it dangerous to drive on the Passage du Gois?
A. Because people like to play and swim in the water.
B. Because drivers are not good at driving in the tide.
C. Because there are too many cars and trucks on the road.
D. Because it is slippery and people can be caught in the tide.
46. Which may be the best title for the article?
A. A Trip to France
B. Driving in the River
C. Dangerous Poles
D. The Passage du Gois

Gina was surprised to find that it was not raining in London. She stepped down from the train that had brought her from Dover to Victoria Station and put her heavy suitcase on the platform(站台). People were hurrying everywhere: through the entrances and exits, up and down the steps, along the other platforms and over to the ticket counters(柜台)where there were already queues forming. The porters(行李员) seemed to be busy helping other passengers. In Milan everyone told her that it was always raining in England. Today, however, they were wrong. It was warm and dusty just like at home. She could even hear someone speaking her native language somewhere near the station bookstore. She walked slowly towards the gate at the end
of the platform where a railway official was collecting the tickets. She handed him her ticket and walked through. She looked up at the station clock. Its hands were pointing to 3:15 p.m.
A young woman was sitting on a bench reading an English magazine. She looked friendly so Gina went up to her.
“Excuse me,” she said. The young woman looked up with a smile. “Can you t ell me the way to the circus?”
“The circus?” The young woman looked puzzled. “What circus do you mean?”
Gina shook her head. “I’m sorry. I have just arrived from Italy to attend a school for foreign students in London. It is near the circus.”
“Do you have a letter with the school’s address on it?”
“Oh, yes. Now I remember.” Gina opened her handbag and found a postcard with a British stamp on it. “Ah,” said the young woman. “It’s Oxford Circus that you want. It’s the name of an area in the middle of London. You must go down these steps and take the underground. Follow the colors. That’s the easiest way.” She showed Gina on the colored map of the underground railway the route from Victoria to Oxford Circus. “Good luck,” she said. “And by the way, I come from I taly, too.”
47. From the passage we know Gina was ________.
A. expecting a friend to meet her
B. attending a school
C. going to study English
D. late for her studies
48. “...there were already queues forming.” implies(暗示) ________.
A. there were too many people waiting
B. people were beginning to wait in line
C. people were ready to form queues
D. people were told to form up in line
49. Oxford Circus is ________.
A. a famous circus

C. a railway station in Italy
D. another name for the middle of London
50. The young woman was puzzled because she ________.
A. had never been to a circus
