Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:“Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today—and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside.I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”
“Oh, sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”
“Nobody. I do it.”
“Really—at night, when you’re asleep?”
“Sure.”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”
24. The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to________.
A. know more about the students
B. make the lessons more exciting
C. raise the students’ interest in art
D. teach the students about toy design
25. What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. He liked to help his teacher.
B. He preferred to study alone.
C. He was active in class.
D. He was imaginative.
26. What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Mistake.
B. Drawback.
C. Difficulty.
D. Burden.
27. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams?
A. To help them to see their creativity.
B. To find out about their sleeping habits.
C. To help them to improve their memory.
D. To find out about their ways of thinking.

With my hands and knees on the floor of the airp lane, I was searching for an old lady’s missing hearing aid during the flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. It occurred to me that this may not be the most dignified posture for a Buddhist nun(修女).
I had seen the old lady from the seat in front of me as she walked up and down the passage with a flashlight. I asked a few times what was wrong, but she didn’t answer at first —– she couldn’t hear me. She was wearing a woolen coat. Judging from her accent, she came from Eastern Europe.
Do you know what hearing aids cost? Thousands, especially for the new tiny
hidden-in-the-ear type she described. It takes a long time for an appointment to make new one and many doctor visits to get the thing adjusted right. Therefore, my dignity seemed less important than finding that hearing aid. But how does one find a tiny black object in a shadowy jet cabin ?
The lady wasn’t even sure where or when she had lost it. At one point, a couple off light attendants did a random search around the lady’s seat; I wasn’t impressed. They lef t suggesting that she search the seat of her previous flight! My flashlight turned up all kinds of small objects, bits of plastic, broken pieces of headphones. The old lady said that she gave up. Yet I couldn’t. After we landed, as passengers streamed past us, I insisted that the lady move aside while awaiting her
wheelchair. Then I got into a real down and dirty search among the dust under her seat and on the floor.
Look! A little peanut-sized shiny black object caught the light of my flashlight in a floor crack near her seat. What a rush. “I found it!” With great astonishment and gratitude, the old lady responded, “I haven’t the words to express my thanks!”
24. Why did the author put her hands and knees on the floor?
A. She is a religious Buddhist nun.
B. She helped the old lady look for her hearing aid.
C. She fell down from her seat.
D. She wanted to stand out among the passengers.
25. What do we know about the old lady?
A. She ignored the author’s question on purpose.
B. She is an American.
C. It was not difficult for her to get the hearing aid at all.
D. She lost her hearing aid by accident.
26. Where was the hearing aid found?
A. Close to the old lady’ seat.
B. On the previous flight.
C. On the wheelchair.
D. In another jet cabin.
27. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To present the love from all people on board.
B. To teach us how to find the lost thing.
C. To tell us a story about kind help.
D. To warn us to be more careful
D
See a cellphone cover that you like on Taobao? Forget about placing an order, paying the bill online and waiting for days for it to be delivered to you. In the near future, you'll be able to get it in minutes just by hitting “print” on your computer. You might find it hard to believe that you
could actually “print” an object like you would a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it would work. Just as a traditional printer sprays ink onto paper line by line, modern 3D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.
Instead of ink, the materials the 3D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin(树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is—from a millimetre to less than the width of a hair—the smoother and finer the object will be. This may sound like a completely new technology, but the truth is that 3D printing has been around since the late 1980s. Back then, it was barely affordable for most people, so few knew about it.
Last year, though, saw a big change in the 3D printing industry—printers became much cheaper. For example, 10 years ago a desktop 3D printer might have cost £20,000, while now they cost only about £1,000, according to the BBC. Taken out of the factory and introduced to more diverse and common uses, 3D printing can create just about anything you can think of—flutes , bikinis, jewelry, aircraft parts and even human organs. In fact, scientists from Cornell University in New York have just made an artificial ear using a 3D printer, according to Science Daily. The fake ear looks and acts exactly like a natural one.
However, as 3D printing becomes more common, it may bring about certain problems—such as piracy. “Once you can download a coffee maker, or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3D printer, who will visit a retail store again?” an expert in 3D printing told Forbes News. Even more frightening, what if anyone in the world could use a 3D printer to print out a fully functioning gun?
32 According to the article, in the future, the 3D printing technology will _______.
A. enable people to make better purchases online
B. change the way we make many products
C. be applied as widely in our daily life as computers
D. shorten the time it takes for people to get what they buy online
33. What happened in the 3D printing industry last year?
A. The 3D printing technology was taken out of the factory.
B. The 3D printing technology began to be used in various fields.
C. The 3D printer was used for medical treatment for the first time.
D. The 3D printer became more affordable for consumers(消费者).
34. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Great Demand for 3D Printers
B. Technology in the Future
C. Online Shopping Disappearing
D. Printing out Everything
35. How is the last paragraph developed?
A. By giving examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing the cause and effect.
D. By using figures.

Dear Elise,
How is everything going? Since I have taken your online course for half a year, I have come to find you a very interesting and creative teacher. Therefore I am writing to request you to come to China to teach English.
It really pays off to devote yourself to helping young people in China with their English. On the one hand, with increasing enthusiasm for English learning, qualified native speakers are desperately needed. On the other hand, it's also a good opportunity for you to get a well paid job and experience Chinese culture.
If you will take my request into account, please do some research to find out some highly effective approaches to teaching English speaking and listening. Hope to hear from you soon!
Yours,

I love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read.I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons.Very often I’m smiling before I go to sleep.
I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep,we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV,read the news on our smart phones or tablets,or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming (宣告) all the things that are happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we’re still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.
Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night.I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception,I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it’s something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life.
And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes.Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure that I get a peaceful sleep.Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.
I’d suggest you find light-hearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time,or if you find difficulty winding at the end of a day.It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.
If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better.Several studies show that
laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain. It strengthens the immune system,it’s good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships.
And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons,I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.
24.What can we learn about Oor Wullie and The Broons?
A.They make people run over the past days.
B.They are the best books to be read before people sleep.
C.They are extremely popular with young people.
D.They make people feel relaxed and happy.

Sometimes people call each other “scared-cat”.But have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream.Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself,or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We,too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face.If we give way to our feelings and let them take over,we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later?Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely,or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut?It isn’t always clever to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter to always hide our feelings? No!If you keep feelings of anger or sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.。
