阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.
Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages.Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.
Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States,a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number.
You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks(漏) in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.
21. Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?
A. Using river water.
B. Paving parking lots.
C. Throwing batteries away.
D. Throwing rubbish into lakes.
22. What can be inferred from the text?
A. All water shortages are due to human behavior.
B. The average family in America makes proper use of water.
C. There is much we can do to reduce family size.
D. It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.
23. The last paragraph is intended to ______________.
A. show us how to fix leaks at home
B. tell us how to run a dishwasher
C. suggest what we do to save water at home
D. prove what drinking glass is best for us
24. The text is mainly about _____________.
A. Why paving roads reduces our water
B. how much we depend on water to live
C. why droughts occur more in dry climates
D. how human activity affects our water supply
B
People who live near the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta, Canada, often says, “If the weather is too cold for you, just wait a few minutes.” Winter temperature can be -34 o C with enough snow, but a chinook will change that in no time.
A chinook is a warm, dry wind that blows eastward from the Pacific Ocean, over the Rocky Mountains, and across the North American prairie(大草原). It can quickly rise temperatures by tens of degrees. Chinook is actually a First Nations word meaning “snow eater”, for in a chinook’s path, snow rapidly disappears.
Chinooks often occur over the western plains of North America, but they are most common in the “chinook belt” of southwestern Alberta where one winter may include up to 30 chinook days. This part of Canada has geographical conditions for a chinook: a warm ocean nearby, westly winds, mountains, and plains.
Alberta’s chinook begins in the Pacific Ocean. Warm, wet winds originate there, then sweep across Britain Columbia and up the western slopes of the Rockies. As the air rises, it expands and cools. Cold air cannot hold as many tiny drops of water as warm air, so the drops fall as rain or snow in the Rockies and the west of them. The now dry air rushes down the eastern side of the mountains picking up speed as heavy, cool air pushes on it from above. The compression(压缩) causes rapid warming. Temperatures may rise as much as 25 o C in five minutes!
Chinook winds may last from only a few hours to a few days, sometimes even several weeks. They can become welcome visitors during the winter, giving people a respite from the cold prairies. But in other seasons, the hot dry winds can dry out vegetation, raise soil into dust storms, and rapidly increase the danger of grass and forest fires.
25. What people say in Paragraph 1 means that ___________.
A. the area has a long winter
B. a chinook will warm the weather
C. the winter will end once a chinook comes
D. people in the area dislike the cold weather
26. In which place does a chinook most often happen?
A. British Columbia.
B. The Pacific Ocean.
C. Southwestern Alberta.
D. The North America prairie.
27. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about a chinook?
A. How it occurs.
B. Why it is warm.
C. Where it happens.
D. What it brings with.
28. W hat does the underlined part “a respite” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. A short escape.
B. A complete relief.
C. A reminder of coldness.
D. An ability to bear coldness.
C
Many children buy ties, socks or golf balls for Father’s Day, but my present had to be the best. After spending several days shopping and asking friends what they were getting, I was more bemused than ever. Finally, my search for the best gift landed me in an old plane, but it was one Father’s Day that my dad and I will never forget.
“Is this your first time to fly?” our instructor asked my dad as he untied the ropes holding the plane down. My stomach churned(翻腾), knowing that in a few minutes I would be in the sky trusting a young man who had just become a pilot with my life. I couldn’t help but think this would be my last time on the ground.
My nerves were making me want to back out and I was looking for any reason to get away, but I knew it would be a good father-daughter experience. The plane was very small, with only four seats, a door that made noise when opened, and an old smell that reminded me of my grandparents’ house.
I quickly discovered the plane had no air conditioning and no radio to talk to each other. We had to yell. After getting permission to take off, we quickly gained speed; I could feel the plane shaking, then slowly lifting off the ground.
It was a sunny day with few clouds. The pilot kept pressing buttons and I wondered if he really knew what he was doing, but somehow we were staying aloft(在空中). He decided to give the controls to my dad. After the pilot pressed a few more buttons and showed how to hold the steering wheel(方向盘), my dad was flying the plane. We made a quick dive and then back up, which made me feel as if I were on a roller coaster. I could see the terror in my dad’s face. I held my seat tightly and stared at the ground, trying to convince myself we were not about to crash. The plane kept jumping up and down and the door seemed as though it would wiggle (摆动) off. After a few minutes of terror, the plane straightened out and I started to breathe normally again.
We flew over the Battlefield Mall, the pool where I worked, and I even saw my house. Eventually, our lesson was over a nd we returned to the runway. The smile on my dad’s face could not
have been bigger.
29. The underlined word “bemused” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”.
A. angry
B. anxious
C. frightened
D. confused
30. What can we know about the plane?
A. The plane was able to contain four people.
B. The plane was so old that its door could not open.
C. People could hear each other clearly in the plane.
D. There was only one old air conditioner in the plane.
31. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. The day when they flew was cloudy but warm.
B. The author worried all time that they would crash.
C. The author’s father wasn’t skilled at flying at all.
D. The author wasn’t afraid at all while flying.

A. it provided them with a chance to fly over many places
B. it was the first time they had gone out together
C. it helped them realize their dream of flying a plane
D. it strengthened their father-daughter relationship
D
There is an English saying that says, “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie.” It means not bringing up an old problem. Researchers in Hungary have found another reason to let dogs keep on sleeping. It seems the animals are learning while they sleep.
The Hungarian researchers placed tools on the dogs’ heads to know about electrical activity in the brain. The brain activity, called sleep spindles (梭状波), takes place in human beings, and has been connected with learning. The researchers hope to understand how the dogs’ ability to learn and remember changes as they get older. The study may help them understand how human brains change as we age.
The researchers found differences between male and female dogs. Lotchey, a researcher, says the females appeared much better at learning new things. Female dogs have about twice as many spindles per minute as male dogs, they also happen to be the better learners, and they memorize the task much better. But it was harder for all the older dogs to remember things, especially when several things were happening at the same time.
DóraSzabó also studies sleep spindles. Szabó is a neuroscientist in a university in Budapest. She
says the older dogs have fewer spindles and are easily c heated. “If you first hide the reward into one bowl, then in another and in another, they get lost after a while. So their performance is going down, and they are getting poor in solving new problems.”
Researchers hope the study will not only help understanding of learning ability and memory changes in dogs, but also the aging of humans. Senior Researcher EnikóKubinyi adds that the aging dogs suffer from the same problems as humans who are aging. “Among very old dogs, up to two thirds of them show signs of dementia (痴呆), and this dementia is really very similar to that of humans, so we could use dogs as a natural model of human aging.”
33. Why do researchers study dogs’ sleep?
A. To help the dogs sleep well.
B. To study dogs’ sleeping activity.
C. To con trol dogs’ learning ability.
D. To know more about human brains.
34. What is the relationship between the number of sleep spindles and dogs’ learning ability?
A. They have nothing to do with each other.
B. Dogs with less spindles have better learning ability.
C. Dogs with more spindles have better learning ability.
D. Dogs’ learning ability is totally decided by spindle number.
35. Which is the best title for the text?
A. What we can do to let dogs sleep.
B. What we can learn by watching sleeping dogs.
C. What the saying "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" means.
D. What is the difference between humans and dogs.
