基础英语1复习题厦门大学网络教育2011-2012学年第一学期《基础英语1》复习题一、阅读理解Passage OneEvery day, in all kinds of weather, many thousands of men and women run very slowly for long distances. This slow running is called jogging. Why has jogging become so popular? Most joggers begin because they hear that it is very good exercise. Jogging makes the heart stronger and helps people lose weight. It can also help them feel better about themselves. How fast should you go if you take jogging exercise? Jog with a friend and talk to each other as you run. If you have difficulty talking, you are going too fast. How far should you jog? Remember not to go too far too soon. In fact, you should walk, not run, the first few times. Then do some short jogs, but no more than what you can do comfortably. After that, increase your distance a quarter or half mile every two weeks or so. Many restaurants close on Sunday. Check the telephone book for the locations and hours of restaurants that are open on Sundays or late at night. If you are outside a major city, it may be difficult to find an eating placethat will serve dinner after 8:30 p.m., although coffee shops and drugstores are usually open late. Some places offer Sunday “brunch”, which is a combination of breakfast and lunch, served at about 11:30 or noon, for late Sunday sleepers. In private homes, eating times vary considerably. In cities, the main meal is usually served in the evening, at about 7:00 or 7:30 p.m.. Many people who work in large cities such as New Y ork or Washington, for example, live an hour or more from their office. In general, however, Americans dine relatively early; 6:30 p.m. is quite common for dinner. On farms, however, the main meal may be served at noon, probably because people who live on farm begin their day so much earlier than those who live in cities.6. It was a kind of lively music intended to make people happy, but it was not so much a kind of music as a style of playing. The New Orleans musicians learned to work together to produce a relaxed beat. The beat is so powerful that the listeners cannot help but dance, or at least move their feet along with it.The best and almost the only place to hear the original New Orleans jazz is in Preservation Hall in the French Quarter of the city. There, seven different bands, made up mostly of very old men, play the old music for four and a half hours each evening. Some of the people in the audience are tourists, but most are serious music lovers who are willing to spend time sitting on plain wooden chairs and benches, and even on the floor. The musicians play the music they want to play, but the audience can ask for a particular song if they are willing to pay for it. Traditional songs cost one dollar and all others cost two.Old-style New Orleans jazz is in danger of disappearingbecause the players are getting old. Many of them are well over seventy. The music did disappear once before, when people lost interest in it and the musicians had to make their living doing other things. But in 1938 the current jazz revival began, when music historian William Russell found the famous trumpet player Bunk Johnson working in the fields and brought him back to New Orleans to play. When Preservation Hall reopened in 1961, the old music finally had a place to live again, and its popularity had grown ever since.11. What is this passage mainly about?A. The revival of old-style jazz music in New Orleans.B. The popularity of jazz music in New Orleans.C. Jazz music and audience paritcipation.D. The ups and downs of old-style jazz musc in New Orleans.12. What was most unusual about New Orleans jazz bands?A. They only played for serious misic lovers.B. Most members of the bands were quite advanced in years.C. They provided old-style jazz.D. The members of the bands played old music fro hours every evening.13. Who was Bunk Johnson?A. A serious music lover.B. A music historian.C. A famous jazz musician.D. A well-known jazz band leader.14. When did Preservation Hall reopen?A. In 1961.B. In 1938.C. In the early 1900s.D. In the late 1900s.15. Why did jazz disappear once before?A. The musicians were too old to play.B. The audience had lost interest in it.C. The bands were short of good trumpet players.D. K201603《英语1》复习题

厦门大学网络教育2015-2016学年第二学期《英语1》课程复习题I. Reading Comprehension:Passage 1Millions of stars are traveling about in space. A few form groups which journey together, but most of them travel alone. And they travel through a universe so large that one star seldom comes near to another. For the most part each star makes its journey in complete loneliness, like a ship on an empty ocean. The ship will be well over a million miles from its nearest neighbor. From this it is easy to understand why a star seldom finds another anywhere near it.We believe, however, that some two thousand million years ago, another star wandering through space happened to come near our sun. Just as the sun and the moon raise tides on the earth, so this star must have raised tides on the surface of the sun. But they were very different from the small tides that are raised in our oceans; a large tidal wave must have traveled over the surface of the sun, at last forming a mountain so high that we cannot imagine it. As the cause of the disturbance came nearer, so the mountain rose higher and higher. And before the star began to move away again, its tidal pull had become so powerful that this mountain was torn to pieces and threw off small parts of itself into space. These small pieces have been going round the sun ever since. They are the planets.1. Millions of stars are _______.A. following their own paths in spaceB. moving about without a fixed courseC. seldom wandering about in the universeD. always traveling together2. Some two thousand million years ago, the mountain on the sun was raised probably because_______.A. a large tidal wave of a star traveled over the surface of the sunB. another star happened to come near the sunC. the sun and the moon raised the tides on the earthD. the star moved away from the sun3. The article suggests that _______.A. our earth exists before the sunB. how space formedC. no one knows where the earth comes fromD. our earth used to be part of a high mountain on the sun4. The expression "the cause of the disturbance" refers to _______.A. the large tidal waveB. the powerful tidal pullC. the star coming near the sunD. one of the sun's planets5. In this article, the writer mainly wants to tell the readers _______.A. that the universe is so large that we cannot imagine itB. how the high mountains were formed on the sunC. why the tides over the surface of the sun were so powerfulD. where the planets in the universe came fromPassage 2By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can greatly increase their children's language development. It is surprising but true. How parents talk to their children makes a big difference in the children's language development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child's language skills increase.A study was done with 30 three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the children participated in the experimental study; the other half acted as the control group. In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes-or-no questions. For example, the parent should ask, "What is the doggie doing?" rather than "Is the doggie running away?" The parents in the experimental group were also instructed in how to help children find answers, how to suggest alternative possibilities and how to praise correct answers. At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ in measures of language development, but at the end of one month, the children in the experimental group showed 5.5 months ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary. Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of 6 months over the children in the control group.6. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. Children who talk a lot are more intelligent.B. Parents who listen to their children can teach them more.C. Active children should read more and be given more attention.D. Verbal ability can easily be developed with proper methods.7. What does "it" in line 2 can most probably be replaced by?A. Parents increasing children's language developmentB. Reading techniques being simpleC. Parents reading to childrenD. Children's intelligence development8. According to the author, which of the following questions is the best type to ask children about?A. Do you see the elephant?B. Is the elephant in the cage?C. What animals do you like?D. Shall we go to the zoo?9. The difference between the control group and the experimental group was __________.A. the training that parents receivedB. the age of the childrenC. the books that were readD. the number of the children10. The best conclusion we can draw from the passage is that __________.A. parents should be trained to read to their childrenB. the more children read, the more intelligent they will becomeC. children's language skills increase when they are required to respond activelyD. children who read actively seem six months olderPassage 3Different as they are, advertisements are alike in one important way. They have the samepurpose, to get people to buy something. In the days of the cave men there was no advertising. There was no need for it. But as soon as people began to make things to sell, advertising was found to be useful. The businessmen of ancient Egypt employed "criers" to walk through the streets shouting or singing about the things they wanted to sell. Newsboys still "cry" their papers now.In the Middle Ages businessmen hung picture signboards over their shop door showing what they had to sell. A large picture of a shoe above a shop door meant that it was a shoemaker's shop. It suggested buying shoes or having old ones mended. As more things were made to be sold, advertising grew. Today advertising is one of the biggest businesses. A great many people work at the advertisement. Every year billions of dollars are spent on advertising.Advertising helps sell more things to more people. This in turn makes it possible to produce more things to sell. Sometimes it even helps make things cost less. Radios, for example, used to cost much more than they do because they were turned out slowly and expensively by hand. But advertising made more people want radios. When producers began making them by the thousands, they found quicker and cheaper ways of doing the job.11. Advertising is almost all made ___________..A. by people who sell thingsB. by people who buy thingsC. by employed "criers"D. by ancient Egyptians12 All advertisements are the same in that ___________.A. they are of the same colorB. they help sell thingsC. they are made on televisionD. they often look alike13. It is not mentioned in the passage that__________ .A. advertising can be in both spoken and written formsB. advertising on TV is much preferredC. the cave men did not make any advertisementD. advertising today employs many "criers"14. Radios used to cost much more than they do today because_____________.A. people did not advertiseB. no one wanted to buy themC. they were made slowly by handD. they were made quickly by machines15 Advertising which is one of the biggest businesses probably began __________.A. in the days of the cave menB. in the Middle AgesC. in the modern timeD. when there were things to sellPassage 3Recycling—using materials for the second time—is nothing new. Waste paper, rags, scrap-iron and many other things have been recycled and used again in many different ways for years. It is only the word that is new. But now that natural materials are becoming more difficult to find, many countries are experimenting with other ways of keeping materials. In the USA, a publishing firm has brought out several books on pollution and waste. The books are made of recycled paper—that is paper that has been used before. In this way, several thousand trees are saved. Multiply those books by a hundred, or even a thousand, and whole forests are saved. One clever schoolboy has worked it out that if every schoolbook in the USA wasrecycled, there would be enough paper for fifty packets of peanuts for every child in the world for five years. He does not say where the peanuts are to come from.Several firms are experimenting with making containers from a hard plastic which, when the contents of the containers are finished, can be used as building materials, a kind of brick. If the mountains of empty cans all over the world can be changed into building materials that are not too expensive, that, too, is a new source of material.16. Waste paper, rags and scrap-iron can _______.A. be thrown awayB. not be used againC. not be keptD. be recycled and used again17. 厦门大学网络教育2014-2015学年第一学期《英语1》课程复习题I. Reading Comprehension:Passage 1Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives something different about it.Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush-hour traffic jam at the intersection. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children in tow. For perception is the mind’s interpretation of what the senses---in this case our eyes---tell us.Many psychologists today are working to try to determine just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. According to the study, babies benefit by being with their fellow infants daily. Whereas a baby might show fear of an adult stranger, he is likely to smile and reach out for an unfamiliar infant. By the time babies are one year old, they have begun to form friendships of a sort. The above findings, based on observation of 100 babies aged three months to three years, might prove interesting to working parents who must find day care for their babies. Family care in a private home, with several babies together, is probably the ideal way to care for babies under three. In cities, the main meal is usually served in the evening, at about 7:00 or 7:30 p.m.. Many people who work in large cities such as New York or Washington, for example, live an hour or more from their office. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree(可可树)by South American Indians. The Spanish intr oduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500’s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine(饥荒)”of 1845—1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America. There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa. Most of these colleges were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some women's colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular (流行的) again. The president of Trinity College (三一大学) in Washington, D.C. said that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women's college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in a women's college a higher percentage of students studies mathematics than in a college with both men and women.Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a women's college, women feel freer to say what they think. Women's schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women are represented everywhere. For example, at a women's college every governing office is held by a woman. Recent studies reportedly show that this leadership continues after college. American women who went to women's colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life. (266 words) ABACB6. A very high percentage of women will become leaders later.D. Women are more likely to be successful in their later careers.10. The title of this passage is most likely to be ______.A. Female Education in the United StatesB. Women's Schools in the United StatesC. Women Should be Given the Same Education as MenD. Education in AmericaPassage3Television carries more national advertising than any other medium in the United States. The same is true in some smaller countries such as Spain and Portugal, where it is the only medium reaching a general national audience. In many countries, (Sweden and Denmark, for example) the state-owned television accepts no advertising. In many other countries the amount of commercial (商业广告) time is very much limited, as in France, Germany, and Italy. Russian state-owned television began accepting a limited amount of advertising in 1988.The chief reason that television is so well liked among United States advertisers is that it reaches a vast number of people at the same time. While it can cost well over 100,000 dollars, a 30-second commercial on network television can be seen and heard by as many as 25 million viewers. For companies that must make prospects aware of their products and convince them of their benefits immediately, there is nothing as efficient as television advertising.Because it employs motion as well as words, pictures, sounds, and music, television is a valuable medium for products that lend themselves to demonstration. No other medium is as effective in showing how quickly an automobile can move or how well a certain type of wristwatch will stand up under heavy use and continue to run. In the same way, it is an ideal medium for showing how some products can make a person feel better about him- or herself, such as long-distance telephone calls.(250 words)CCADB11. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn‟t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent. For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition a t Queen Elizabeth College in London, “n or does giving people breakfast improve performance.”Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults, “The literature”, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University of Texas, “is poor”.1. In most cultures, animals are in a worse position than human beings. In some cases, however, people treat their pets like members of their families or perhaps better. In the United States and Europe, there are special shops that sell clothing and food for cats and dogs.In many countries of the world, there is special food for pets. It is common for big markets in many places to sell cat food and dog food. However, in a small town in France, there is a special restaurant for dogs. Dogs are the only customers. 厦门大学继续教育2015英语复习题

2015-2016 学年第一学期厦门大学网络教育2 》课程复习题《英语I. Reading Comprehension:Passage 1Trees should only be pruned (修剪) when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrownand unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought thatmore damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The objectmay be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may bedone to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that arerubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air.One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entryfor disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and thedisease as to decide whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is atrisk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is essential to make the area which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be sloweddown by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it withone of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference fromthe leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is,of course, impossible to paint them properly.1. Pruning should be done to _____. BA. make the tree grow tallerB. improve the shape of the treeC. get rid of the small branchesD. make the small branches thicker2. Trees become unhealthy if the gardener _____. AA. allows too many branches to grow in the middleB. does not protect them from the windC. forces them to grow too quicklyD. damages some of the small side branches3. Why is a special substance painted on the tree? BA. To make a wound smooth.B. To prevent disease entering a wound.C. To cover a rough surface.D. To help a wound to dry.4. A good gardener prunes a tree _____. CA. at intervals throughout the yearB. as quickly as possibleC. occasionally when necessaryD. regularly every winter5. What was the author's purpose when writing this passage? AA. To give practical instructions for pruning a tree.B. To give a general description of pruning.C. To explain how trees develop diseases.1D. To discuss different methods of pruning.Passage 2Instead of a boost to productivity, many firms are discovering that the Internet is having the opposite effect in the workplace. Employees are surfing the web, checking their stocks, tuning in to web-broadcasts, all while being paid to work. A recent study suggests that German companies lose almost $50 billion each year through employees' personal workplace web surfing. It's been estimated that as many as 60% of all employees with desktop Internet access go online at least once daily for non-business activities. On average they spend some 3.2 hours a week of company time online. The German government, always eager for new sources of tax revenue, has announced that it is investigating ways to tax Internet access by employees for personal use, the theory being that free surf time is a taxable employee benefit -- like a company car.Imposing such a tax would be difficult, but the threat helps to highlight employers' need to keep employees' noses to the grindstone. Of course, one company's problem can be another company's opportunity. Filtering and monitoring software is a booming business -- and the future looks bright. The Internet access control software business will likely generate over $500 million in annual sales by 2004. That means more firms will be installing software like Super Scout by Surf Control, which not only knows where you surfed, but can block access to nonessential sites. So, if the next time you go surfing your board seems a little bit smaller, it could be because Big Brother is going along for the ride.6. What is the headache to many firms? CA. Employees' surf time is increasing.B. The difficulty of imposing tax on Internet access by employees for personal use.C. The increasing money paid for employees' personal use online.D. Business is slow with the coming of the Internet.7. The opposite effect of the Internet, in the eyes of many firms, is that ________ .CA. employees are surfing without realizing the passage of timeB. employees have an access to the Internet for their own benefit free of chargeC. employees pay less attention to their work while they have to pay for the undesirableD. the fluctuation in stock market can affect employees' incentives8. “to keep employees' noses to the grindstone”( Paragraph 3) means ________. AA. to make employees continue to work hard without interruptionB. to prevent employees from going surfing onlineC. to encourage employees to go surfing while workingD. to punish employees for wrongdoing9. Who will benefit from this issue? CA. The German government.B. The firms.C. The software company.D. The company collecting taxes.10. What can be concluded from the last paragraph? CA. There will be a boost to productivity with the help of Surf Control.B. The German government will sooner or later find a new way of increasing tax revenue.C. You are likely to be watched and controlled while online in workplace.2D. Your employer is likely present while you go surfing.Passage 3Millions of stars are traveling about in space. A few form groups which journey together, but most of them travel alone. And they travel through a universe so large that one star seldom comes near to another. For the most part each star makes its journey in complete loneliness, like a ship on an empty ocean. The ship will be well over a million miles from its nearest neighbor. From this it is easy to understand why a star seldom finds another anywhere near it.We believe, however, that some two thousand million years ago, another star wanderingthrough space happened to come near our sun. They are the planets.11. Millions of stars are _______. AA. following their own paths in spaceB. moving about without a fixed courseC. seldom wandering about in the universeD. always traveling together12. Some two thousand million years ago, the mountain on the sun was raised probably because_______. BA. a large tidal wave of a star traveled over the surface of the sunB. another star happened to come near the sunC. the sun and the moon raised the tides on the earthD. the star moved away from the sun13. The article suggests that _______. DA. our earth exists before the sunB. how space formedC. no one knows where the earth comes fromD. our earth used to be part of a high mountain on the sun14. The expression he cause of the disturbance refers to _______. CA. the large tidal waveB. the powerful tidal pullC. the star coming near the sunD. one of the sun's planets15. In this article, the writer mainly wants to tell the readers _______. DA. that the universe is so large that we cannot imagine itB. how the high mountains were formed on the sunC. why the tides over the surface of the sun were so powerfulD. where the planets in the universe came fromPassage 4Cars are important in the United States. Without a car most people feel that they are poor.3And even if a person is poor he doesn't feel really poor when he has a car.Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn't know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The car made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today. There are three main reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a lot of money. The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developedan efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence iswhat really made cars popular. Americans don't like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don't like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have. The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be abigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so much gas.16. When do most Americans feel they are poor? AA. When they don't have a car.B. When they live in a huge country.C. When they don't use planes.D. When they have a car.17. What is the most important reason that cars become popular in the United States? CA. Because the United States is huge.B. Because public transportation is not so good.C. Because Americans like to be independent.D. Because Americans like to move around.18. What public transportation is good in the United States? DA. Buses.B. Trains.C. Taxis.D. Planes.19. What has caused a big problem for Americans? CA. A new kind of car.B. Public transportation.C. 基础英语1厦门大学网络教育2011-2012学年第二学期《基础英语1》复习题一、阅读理解Passage OneBlue jeans are the all-American, all-purpose clothing. Farmers and laborers wear them to work in. Children wear them to play in. Teenagers and adults wear them to look fashionable (时髦). Before the 1950’s, blue jeans were popular only in the West and the Southwest. Today almost everyone wears them.Levi Strauss and Company makes about one-third of all the jeans in the United States and about one-seventh of those in other countries. In fact, for a long time people used the word Levi’s as a synonym(同义词)for blue jeans. That’s because Levi’s were the first jeans ever made. Their inventor was a German immigrant(移民) named Levi Strauss.Levi Strauss left Germany in 1848, when he was a young man. He came to New Y ork City to be near his two brothers. For two years, he was a door-to-door salesman. He worked hard, but he didn’t make much money. Then like many other Easterners, he decided to go to San Francisco. When Levi went West, he brought some canvas ( a very strong cloth) with him. He wanted to sell it to the gold miners for making tents. His canvas was the wrong kind for tents, but Levi found another use for it. A miner told Levi that he needed a strong pair of pants because digging for gold was hard work. When Levi heard that, he made him a pair of canvas pants. The miner paid Levi $6 in gold dust and told the others about “those pants of Levi’s”. Levi quickly sold a lot of pants, but h e ran outof canvas. He wrote to his bothers in New Y ork and told them to send more. Instead, they sent him some heavy cotton cloth called denim. Much of this kind of cloth came from Genes (the French name for the city of Genoa, Italy). Levi changed the spelling of Genes to jeans. He also dyed (染) the denim blue. Living in a modern Asian city is not very different from living in an American city. The same cannot not be said about living on farms, however. In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each farm family lives on its own fields, often beyond the sight of any neighbors. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning, American farmers stay on their land throughout the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on buses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas, there are small schools serving a few farm families, and the children walk to school.Of course life keeps changing for everyone, including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, and television sets. And of course there are modern machines for farming. All of these have changed farm life. For many years, however, farming in American was often a lonely way of living. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new methods, and to trust their owm ideas instead of following older ways.6. Where do farm families in the United States live?A. In towns.B. In villages.C. Near churches.D. Its first use was as a shade against the sun!Nobady knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh centurey B.C.We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use; it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrellaas protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Many restaurants close on Sunday. Check the telephone book for the locations and hours of restaurants that are open on Sundays or late at night. If you are outside a major city, it may be difficult to find an eating place that will serve dinner after 8:30 p.m., although coffee shops and drugstores are usually open late. Many people who work in large cities such as New York or Washington, for example, live an hour or more from their office. In general, however, Americans dine relatively early; 6:30 p.m. is quite common for dinner. On farms, however, the main meal may be served at noon, probably because people who live on farm begin their day so much earlier than those who live in cities.21. 在退休的前一天,彼得恳请其说出真相,结果令彼得恍然大悟。

答案简析1.D。

根据下文这个工人越过边界后,走下山坡,所以到达边界之前应在朝山上走。

故选up。

2.C。

5.A。

彼得想发现这个工人在走私什么,所以应仔细地检查。

故选carefully。

6.D。

这里根据文意,应选择表示“是否”之意的whether作宾语从句的引导词。

7.A。

12.C。

固定结构be able to do sth. 意为“能够干某事”。

13.A。

17.C。

“on the job”为一常用短语。
