This year my husband and I decided to have a quiet, low-key New Year's Eve. We wanted to spend it with our kids and other immediate family and make it a special 1 for them, instead of 2 a babysitter and going out on our own. The logical way to do this was through 3 . As we all know, food had a magical way of making; a night 4 , and our New Year's Eve certainly 5 that way, thanks to doughnuts(甜甜圈).
I decided to make doughnuts because my cousins had 6 a batch(一批) on Halloween and I found it very 7 . I used a recipe from the 1976 Mennonite cookbook More With Less and it 8 a curious ingredient---two cups of mashed potatoes that 9 made the texture lighter. The doughnuts were 10 and cut from a sheet of dough(生面团), then left to rise until ready to fry in hot oil. Then they took several seconds to 11 , which meant that my enormous batch of 100 doughnuts was 12 cooking in a fairly short time. We glazed(浇上浆液) the tops and then 13 them for the rest of the evening. The leftovers disappeared at breakfast.
This will become an annual 14 , I have no doubt. Whether we host a bigger party or keep it small, there will always be 15 doughnuts, because when you have hot homemade doughnuts, you can't help but have the best time.

When I started riding a bike a couple of years ago, I didn't think my involvement would ever be more serious than the occasional short ride. But as I built strength, my friends 1 me to step up my training and try some longer trips. The first one to come along was a 150-mile trip, the MS-150, an annual 2 that raises money to fight AIDS.
When I registered, the idea seemed fantastic and I trained with 3 . However, as the time for the ride approached, my self-doubts 4 beyond my endurance (忍耐). I 5 wanted to raise money for the charity, but I didn't really want to bike all those miles for two days straight.
The ride began on a beautiful Sunday morning in the Georgia countryside, and for the first few hours I felt 6 .This was just the experience I had 7 ,and my spirits were high. 8 by the end of the day, I felt tired out.
If the body is 9 to the mind, here was evidence. Every 10 my brain pushed out seemed to travel right down to my leg s. “I can't handle this” became a leg cramp (抽筋), and “Everyone else is a better rider” translated into 11 of breath. I was sure I'd have to 12 .
As I topped the crest (顶) of a hill, the beautiful sunset kept me going for a few minutes more. Then in the distance, I saw a lone woman riding very slowly 13 the bright red sun. I 14 that the person looked different in some way, but I couldn't tell why. So I pushed myself to 15 . There she was, riding along slowly but 16 ,with a slight and determined smile on her face and she had only one leg.
My focus changed in that instant. For a whole day I'd been 17 my body. But now I knew it wasn't the body, but the 18 that would help me reach my goal. It rained all the second day. I never saw the one-legged biker again, but I pushed on without 19 , knowing she was out there with me somewhere. And at the end of the day, still feeling 20 , I completed the 150-mile trip.

15 years spent in the field of education has provided me with treasured moments. One of the most priceless happened when I was teaching second grade, 10 years ago.
In May of the fourth quarter, I decided to 1 something special for the children: A Mother’s Day tea. We put our 2 together to come up with ideas of how to 3 our mothers. We decided to hold o ur tea the Friday before Mother’s Day. Each child took home an invitation and I was 4 to see that every mother was planning to attend. I even invited my own mother.
Finally the 5 day arrived. At 1:45 that afternoon, each child lined up at our classroom waiting for the 6 of his or her mom. As it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn’t 7 and he was looking anxious.
I took my 8 by the hand and walked over to Jimmy. “Jimmy,” I said. “I have a bit of problem here and I was wondering if you could 9 . I’m going to be really busy. I was wondering if you could keep my mother company while I’m busy.”
My mom and Jimmy sat at a table with two other mother-and-child 10 . Jimmy served my mom her treats, presented her with the gifts I had made, and pulled out and pushed in her chair, just as we had practised the day before. 11 I looked over, my mom and Jimmy were in 12 conversation.
Now, 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment. Last year, I was at a high school to 13 a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy. When Jimmy made sure we were the last two, he said, “Remember our Mother’s Day 14 we had in second grade? Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too. No one knew my mom
didn’t make it!” I 15 my work with a hug from a teenage boy who had probably stopped hugging teachers years ago.

I was walking home from school one day and it happened to be a particularly cold and windy day. It was 1 and I was crazy enough to forget my hats and scarf. You can imagine my cheeks were

Every year, many dolphins worldwide are captured(捕获)and kept in small pools, performing for people, especially children. These dolphins are fed fish instead of having to 1 them. As a result, they start spending most of their time near the pool rather than underwater. They get out of shape and can no longer 2 long distances. Thus comes the question, "Should captive dolphins be 5 ?"
Jeff Foster, a 55-year old expert, decided to help two captive dolphins, Tom and Misha, to reach their top physical 6 . 8 Tom and Misha lived in captivity for 4-5 years, they were able to adapt to the wild. It was 9 what Foster had hoped for. His dreams for the dolphins had finally come true and he knew that the dolphins would 10 in the wild.
This program was a big success, but there have been others that failed. For example, another dolphin, Keiko, returned into the ocean in 2002, but 11 a year later because of all the misery (不幸)he 12 . The sudden environment change did not 13 him well.
