1.General descriptionThe PCA8565 is a CMOS 1 real time clock and calendar optimized for low powerconsumption.A programmable clock output,interrupt output and voltage-low detector are also provided. All address and data are transferred serially via a two-line bidirectional I 2C-bus. Maximum bus speed is 400kbit/s. "If any part of the loop should open (become disconnected or have out of limit resistance), the circuit will go into the alarm state" [ref TR20.20], nonetheless, due to the redundancy inherent in the dual wire wrist strap design, the operator will continue to be grounded via the second intact wire. Per ESD Handbook TR20.20 section 5.3.9.2.2 Dual Conductor Resistance Continuous Monitors, "This type of monitor is used with a two wire (dual conductor) wrist strap. The wrist strap assembly consists of a two-wire ground cord and a wristband that has two isolated halves. When a person is wearing the wrist strap properly, the monitor measures the loop resistance consisting of one wire of the ground cord, one-half of the wristband, the person's skin, the second half of the wristband, and a second wire in the ground cord. If any part of the loop should open (become disconnected or have out of limit resistance), the circuit will go into the alarm state. ESD Handbook TR 20.20 paragraph 5.3.2.4.4 Test Frequency "Because wrist straps have a finite life, it is important to develop a test frequency that will guarantee integrity of the system. Typical test programs recommend that wrist straps that are used daily should be tested daily. However, if the products that are being produced are of such value that knowledge of a continuous, reliable ground is needed, and then continuous monitoring should be considered or even required" Continuous Monitors pay for themselves improving quality, productivity, eliminating wrist strap daily testing and test result logging. Per ESD-S1.1 paragraph 6.1.3 Frequency of Functional Testing "Daily [Wrist Strap] testing may be omitted if constant monitoring is used." Each wafer is trimmed to the customer's specifications.These circuits monitor the power supply voltage of µP based systems. When the power supply voltage drops below the voltage threshold a reset is asserted immedi-ately (within an interval T D1). The reset remains asserted after the supply voltage rises above the voltage threshold for a time interval, T D2 . The reset output may be either active high (RESET) or active low (RESETB). The reset output may be configured as either push/pull or open drain. The state of the reset output is guaranteed to be correct for supply voltages greater than 1V.The AME8501 includes all the above functionality plus an overtemperature shutdown function. These SoftSpan TM ADCs can be software-programmed for 0V to 5V, 0V to 10V, ±5V or ±10V input spans and operate from a single 5V supply. The 8-chan-nel multiplexer can be programmed for single-ended inputs or pairs of differential inputs or combinations of both. In addition, all channels are fault protected to ±25V.A fault condition on any channel will not affect the conversion result of the selected channel.An onboard high performance sample-and-hold and pre-cision reference minimize external components. Using on-chip resistors and switches, it provides an attenuation and offset that can be programmed for each channel on the fly.The precisely trimmed attenuators ensure accurate input ranges. Because they precede the multiplexer, errors due to multiplexer on-resistance are eliminated.The input word that selects the input channel also selects the desired input range for that channel. The available ranges are 0V to 5V, 0V to 10V (unipolar), ±5V and ±10V (bipolar). They are achieved with the ADC running on a single 5V supply. In addition to the range selection, single ended or differential inputs may be selected for each channel or pair of channels. Finally, overrange protection is provided for unselected channels. An overrange condi-tion on an unused channel will not affect the conversion result on the selected channel.CONVERSION DETAILSThe LTC1857/LTC1858/LTC1859 use a successive approxi-mation algorithm and an internal sample-and-hold circuit to convert an analog signal to a 12-/14-/16-bit serial out-put respectively. The ADCs are complete with a precision reference and an internal clock. The control logic provides easy interface to microprocessors and DSPs. (Please refer to the Digital Interface section for the data format.)The analog signals applied at the MUX input channels are rescaled by the resistor divider network formed by R1, R2and R3 as shown below. The rescaled signals appear on the MUXOUT (Pins 10, 11) which are also connected to the ADC inputs (Pins 12, 13) under normal operation.Before starting a conversion, an 8-bit data word is clocked into the SDI input on the first eight rising SCK edges to select the MUX address, input range and power down mode. The ADC enters acquisition mode on the falling edge of the sixth clock in the 8-bit data word and ends on the rising edge of the CONVST signal which also starts a conversion (see Figure 7). A minimum time of 4µs will provide enough time for the sample-and-hold capacitors to acquire the analog signal. Once a conversion cycle has begun, it cannot be restarted.During the conversion, the internal differential 12-/14-/16-bit capacitive DAC output is sequenced by the SAR from the most significant bit (MSB) to the least significant bit (LSB). The input is successively compared with the binary weighted charges supplied by the differential capacitive DAC. Bit decisions are made by a high speed comparator.At the end of a conversion, the DAC output balances the analog input (ADC + – ADC –). The SAR contents (a 16-bit data word) which represents the difference of ADC + and ADC – are loaded into the 12-/14-/16-bit shift register.DRIVING THE ANALOG INPUTSThe nominal input ranges for the LTC1857/LTC1858/LTC1859 are 0V to 5V, 0V to 10V, ±5V and ±10V and the MUX inputs are overvoltage protected to ±25V. The input impedance is typically 42k Ω in unipolar mode and 31k Ωin bipolar mode, therefore, it should be driven with a low impedance source. Wideband noise coupling into the input can be minimized by placing a 3000pF capacitor at the input as shown in Figure 2. An NPO-type capacitor gives the lowest distortion. Place the capacitor as close to the device input pin as possible. If an amplifier is to be used to drive the input, care should be taken to select an amplifier with adequate accuracy, linearity and noise for the application. The full-scale range of the LTC1857/LTC1858/LTC1859 is equal to ±5V,0V to 5V, ±10V or 0V to 10V. The output of the reference is connected to the input of a gain of 1.6384x buffer through an 8k resistor (see Figure 3). The internal reference can be overdriven with an external reference if more accuracy is needed. The buffer output drives the internal DAC and is available at REFCOMP (Pin 16). The REFCOMP pin can be used to drive a steady DC load of less than 2mA. Driving an AC load is not recommended because it can cause the performance of the converter to degrade.successive integer LSB values (i.e., 0.5LSB, 1.5LSB,2.5LSB, … FS – 1.5LSB). The output code is natural binary with 1LSB = FS/65536. Figure 4b shows the input/output transfer characteristics for the bipolar mode in two’s complement format.FULL SCALE AND OFFSETIn applications where absolute accuracy is important,offset and full-scale errors can be adjusted to zero during a calibration sequence. Offset error must be adjusted before full-scale error. Zero offset is achieved by adjusting the offset applied to the “–” input. For single-ended inputs,this offset should be applied to the COM pin.
