mother to speak to his father to approach a
go-between—would Chie have been more receptive?
5He came on a winter’s eve.He pounded on the
door while a cold rain beat on the shuttered veranda,
so at first Chie thought him only the wind.The maid
knew better.Chie heard her soft scuttling footsteps,
the creak of the door.Then the maid brought a
10calling card to the drawing room,for Chie. Chie was reluctant to go to her guest;perhaps she was feeling too cozy.She and Naomi were reading at a low table set atop a charcoal brazier.A thick quilt spread over the sides of the table so their legs were 15tucked inside with the heat.
“Who is it at this hour,in this weather?”Chie questioned as she picked the name card off the maid’s lacquer tray.
“Shinoda,Akira.Kobe Dental College,”she read. 20Naomi recognized the name.Chie heard a soft intake of air.
“I think you should go,”said Naomi.
Akira was waiting in the entry.He was in his early twenties,slim and serious,wearing the black
25military style uniform of a student.As he bowed—his hands hanging straight down,a
black cap in one,a yellow oil-paper umbrella in the other—Chie glanced beyond him.In the glistening surface of the courtyard’s rain-drenched paving 30stones,she saw his reflection like a dark double.“Madame,”said Akira,“forgive my disruption,
but I come with a matter of urgency.”
His voice was soft,refined.He straightened and
stole a deferential peek at her face.
35In the dim light his eyes shone with sincerity.
Chie felt herself starting to like him.
“Come inside,get out of this nasty night.Surely
your business can wait for a moment or two.”
“I don’t want to trouble you.Normally I would
40approach you more properly but I’ve received word of a position.I’ve an opportunity to go to America,as dentist for Seattle’s Japanese community.”“Congratulations,”Chie said with amusement.“That is an opportunity,I’m sure.But how am I
45involved?”
Even noting Naomi’s breathless reaction to the
ame card,Chie had no idea.Akira’s message, delivered like a formal speech,filled her with maternal amusement.You know how children speak 50so earnestly,so hurriedly,so endearingly about things that have no importance in an adult’s mind? That’s how she viewed him,as a child.
It was how she viewed Naomi.Even though
Naomi was eighteen and training endlessly in the arts
55needed to make a good marriage,Chie had made no effort to find her a husband.
Akira blushed.
“Depending on your response,I may stay in Japan.I’ve come to ask for Naomi’s hand.”

“We have an understanding.Please don’t judge
my candidacy by the unseemliness of this proposal.I

Chie waited for Naomi’s ripe laughter.
Naomi was silent.She stood a full half minute
looking straight into Chie’s eyes.Finally,she spoke.

这道题目要想作对，首先要知道选项中的one character和another character指的是原文三个人当中的哪两个，根据文章的主要动作和语言的发出者，可以锁定一个是chie，一个是Akira。

此时，题目就好做很多，A选项中的argue，原文没有体现。

B选项中的surprising 原文中可以找到（line5-20，说明男子没有预约，初次见面）。

C选项错误，chie并没有回忆过去。

D选项原文最后部分有所体现，但文章的主要部分是chie与akira的对话，同时，chie是有情感变化的（一开始喜欢这个男孩-line36，后来得知男孩的目的后，不高兴了-line60）。

其实，在首轮筛选中，很多同学会保留A，那我们先这样做。

B选项的关键信息detailed和meaningful encounter都有体现（人物对话，动作等描述地非常细致；求婚是件大事）C选项中的definitive response （确定的答复）是错误的，原文到最后也没有确定的答复。

D选项改变的文章的基调，文章是严肃的，甚至有些不开心，cheerful amusing 无从说起。

那么A和B如何做出选择呢？
A和B的显著不同在于，A侧重的是“分析”，B侧重的是“描述”，很明显，本文大部分都在描述---对话，心理，动作。

所以，B更加恰当。

词汇题一定要注意上下文之间的限定关系以及逻辑关系。

从line1，我们看不出什么。

那么可以再看line65：I ask directly because the use of a go-between takes much time.上过gumi老师托福课程的同学都知道7大逻辑关系，这里很明显，是对比，将directly和go-between进行对比，go-between浪费时间，而directly节约时间。

那么go-between啥意思？我们去line1看就知道了---找父母中间沟通。

所以，此题目选C。

注意，循证题最好两道题目一起做。

先看第4题，题目中最关键的信息是most fear，怀着这个目的，我们去读原文，很多同学会觉得四个选项都不错。

没关系，此时，我们看第5题，我们结合第四题的题目和第五题的选项，看哪个选项符合该题目。

A选项和害怕毫无关联。

B选项是从chie的角度出发的心理活动，不是akira的害怕。

C选项是Akira说的一段话，体现出他害怕担心chie会认为他的请求不合适。

D选项没有任何和fear对应的信息。

所以，第五题可以确定答案是C，进而第四题也可以确定为A。

其次，读题一定要注意人物，不要把文章三个人搞混（这是很多同学错误的原因）。

A选项错误，Akira没有喜欢不喜欢Chie。

B选项错误，Akira没有所谓的客观不客观地对待Chie。

C选项错误，amusement基调错误，文章是很serious的。

D选项从文章中的语言描述和肢体动作可以看出（eg line34-deferential；line 77-bowed），同时，也能看出Akira大胆的一面，讲话很直接，同时，line71也体现出没有完全的恭敬。

首先BC明显不对，并没有criticize和question （质疑）。

过程），但是，并不是主要表达内容。

2第一段是在describe还是在analyze呢？很明显，整个第三句话(第二段最重要的内容）用虚拟语气来分析了chie不那么receptive的可能原因（如果....,chie会不会....呢？）。

而describe是客观/外在的描述，而不是思考/分析。

3D选项有关键信息与原文对应，那就是“reaction”与原文的receptive对应。

(建议复习虚拟语气的省略和倒装，对于小说类阅读非常有帮助。
