In the early 1900s, Carol Ryrie Brink lived with her
grandmother Caddie on a tiny farm in Idaho. The farm was
a great place to live. Besides wonderful tall climbing trees,
it had cats and chickens and a horse, which she rode all over
the countryside and through the streets of town.
Even so, Carol was sometimes lonely. She would
climb to the top of her favorite tree and make up stories to
cheer herself up. The favorite part of her day was when
Grandmother Caddie would sit with her and tell stories
about the adventures (冒险经历) she and her brothers had.
Carol loved the stories so much that when she grew up, she decided to write a book about them. Thousands of children throughout the world have read and loved Caddie Woodlawn. Carol’s book won a special award (奖项) called the Newbery Medal. Each year only one children’s book is chosen to win this award.
Carol said it was her son and daughter who inspired (激励) her to write for children. That wasn’t easy when sh e was busy taking care of a family. Sometimes an idea would come to her while she was washing the supper dishes. She would make a quick note and come back to write it out more fully after her children were asleep.
Carol wrote 27 books in her life, many of which are about her life in Idaho. Besides the Newbery Medal, she won many more awards. Later when another author Mary Reed wrote a book about Carol Ryrie Brink, she summed up (概括) Carol’s life by saying, “She tried to live in a way that would not harm ot hers, to never waste a day, and to make the most of her life.”

George Watford works at the American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASPCA) in New York City. He gets some
unusual phone calls. One day, he got a call about
a mountain lion living in a small building. “We
didn’t believe it,” Watford said. “But when we
went out there, sure enough, there was a
mountain lion sitting at the front window looking out at us.” The big cat’s owner
kn ew that his neighbors were unhappy about the animal. He didn’t try to stop us taking it away.
In one year, the ASPCA took in 9,459 different animals, not counting cats and dogs. That number includes a lot of rabbits and monkeys, but the ASPCA has also taken many other exotic (外来的) pets from people’s homes. These animals can’t be set free into the wild because they wouldn’t survive. The ASPCA tries to find homes for them in zoos or special areas for animals.
It’s against the law to sell wild animals in New York City. Many buildings don’t even allow dogs and cats, not to mention more exotic animals. Still, the ASPCA takes away most of the exotic animals not because of complaints (怨言), but because the pet’s owner needs help. A lovely baby lion or bear will fina lly grow up to be dangerous. “When they bite (咬人), it isn’t because they hate you. It’s because they’re wild animals,” said exotic animal expert Kathi Travers.
Travers is quick to give speeches against raising wild animals as pets. Too often people think t hat caring for a wild animal is the same as caring for a dog or a cat. “To love an animal is not enough,” Travers said. “There has to be respect (尊重), and respect is not taking an animal, sticking it in a little cage, and expecting the animal to be happy.”
60. The call was made _____.
A. to report a missing lion
B. to report a neighbor for keeping a lion
C. when the owner was away
D. when the lion broke out of the window
61. When it finds an exotic animal in the city, the ASPCA _____.
A. keeps it until it grows up
B. sets it free into the wild
C. helps find it a home
D. sells it to a zoo
62. The last paragraph is written to show that _____.
A. it takes effort to care for a wild animal
B. keeping wild animals as pets is unwise
C. wild animals are happy in big spaces
D. wild animals can be dangerous
C
The American screen has long been a smoky place. But cigarettes are more common in movies today than at any other time in the last 50 years. According to a survey by the University of California, San Francisco, 75% of all Hollywood films released between 1999 and 2006 showed tobacco (烟草) use.
Sadly, audiences — especially kids — are taking notice. Two recent studies show that among children as young as 10, those who always see smoking in the
movies are up to 2.7 times more likely than others to pick up the habit. Kids from non-smoking homes are hit the hardest. This could be because they don’t live with the dirty ashtrays (烟灰缸) that make real-world smoking a lot less attractive than the cleaned-up movie version.
“Seeing smoking on-screen makes it look normal,” says Jono Polansky, who works with a project called Smoke Free Movies. “It says, ‘If you want to be an adult, you’ll smoke,’” Polansky told TFK (Time for Kids). Before you go to the movies, check out for an updated list of which movies show smoking.
More groups than ever are pushing to get the smokes off of the screen. “Some movies show kids up to 14 incidents of smoking per hour,” says Barry Bloom, head of the Harvard School of Public Health. “We’re in the business of preventing disease, and cigarettes are the Number 1 preventable cause.”
Pressure (压力) is growing to make movies a non-smoking zone. A dozen health groups, including the American Medical Association, are calling for a reduction of smoking in movies and on TV. Forty-one state attorneys general (州总检察长) have agreed to add an anti-tobacco public service ad at the beginning of any DVD that includes smoking.
Like former smokers, movie studios may realize that getting out of the habit is not just a lot healthier, but also a lot smarter.
63. The underlined part “the habit” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.
A. smoking
B. studying
C. taking notice
D. seeing a movie
64. Jono Polansky probably advises kids to _____.
A. act like an adult

W: That music is terrible! Turn it off!
M: But, Mu m, this is Westlife’s song My Love! It’s great.

When I was 19 years old, I moved to Venezuela in South America, and later returned to the United States in 1993. I entered Brigham Young University from 1993 to 1999, and I majored in Spanish education and Teaching English as a Second Language. After graduating from university, I moved to Tokyo, Japan, in the spring of 1999. Then, in 2006, I moved to Nagoya, Japan, where I currently live and teach. The Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar. As one of the traditional Chinese festivals,it
has been enjoying great popularity in our country. Usually,no matter how far away or how busy we are,we will try to return home for the celebration. The moon that night looks the brightest in the whole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moon together. With the beautiful moon up in the sky,we sit together and eat moon cakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditional activities,we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visiting our relatives or friends.。
