PDM以软件为基础,是一门管理所有与产品相关的信息(包括电子文档、数字化文件、数据库记录等)和所有与产品相关的过程(包括工作流程和更改流程)的技术。
它提供产品全生命周期的信息管理,并可在企业范围内为产品设计和制造建立一个并行化的协作环境。
PDM的基本原理是,在逻辑上将各个CAX信息化孤岛集成起来,利用计算机系统控制整个产品的开发设计过程,通过逐步建立虚拟的产品模型,最终形成完整的产品描述、生产过程描述以及生产过程控制数据。
技术信息系统和管理信息系统的有机集成,构成了支持整个产品形成过程的信息系统,同时也建立了CIMS的技术基础。
通过建立虚拟的产品模型,PDM 系统可以有效、实时、完整的控制从产品规划到产品报废处理的整个产品生命周期中的各种复杂的数字化信息。
产品数据管理PDM(ProductDataManagement)技术很难有一个准确的定义加以描述。
但就现阶段PDM的发展情况而言,可以给出一个较为具体的定义:“PDM 技术以软件技术为基础,是一门管理所有与产品相关的信息(包括电子文档、数字化文档数据库记录等)和所有与产品相关的过程(包括审批/发放、工程更改、一般流程、配置管理等)的技术。

凡是最终可以转换成计算机描述和存储的数据,PDM都可以一概管之,例如:产品结构和配置、零件定义及设计数据、CAD绘图文件、工程分析及验证数据、制造计划及规范、NC编程文件、图像文件(照片、造型图、扫描图等)、产品说明书、软件产品(程序、库、函数等“零部件”)、各种电子报表、成本核算、产品注释等、项目规划书、多媒体音像产品、硬拷贝文件、其它电子数据等。
由此看来,所谓PDM,并不只是一个技术模型,也不是一堆时髦的技术辞藻的堆砌,更不是简单的编写程序。
它必须是一种可以实现的技术;必须是一种可以在不同行业、不同企业中实现的技术;必须是一种与企业文化相结合的技术。
因此,它与企业自身密切相关。
考察当今PDM实施成功的企业,每个企业都有自己非常具体的奋斗目标和项目名称,从福特的"Ford2000"、波音的"DCAC/MRM"到日产的"业务过程革新"等,凡取得成就者,无一不是将PDM融汇于企业文化之中。
因此,PDM的生命力,或换而言之,PDM之精髓,也正在于此。
PDM的发展过程可以概括为以下三个阶段
1.配合CAD工具的PDM系统早期的PDM产品诞生于20世纪80年代初。
2.专业PDM系统通过对早期PDM产品功能的不断扩展,最终出现了专业化的PDM 产品,如SDRC公司的Metaphase和UGS的iMAN等就是第二代PDM产品的代表。
3.PDM的标准化阶段1997年2月,OMG组织公布了其PDMEnabler标准草案。

PDM进行信息管理的两条主线是静态的产品结构和动态的产品设计流程,所有的信息组织和资源管理都是围绕产品设计展开的,这也是PDM系统有别于其它的信息管理系统,如MIS、制造资源计划(MRPⅡ)、项目管理系统(PM )、企业资源计划(ERP )的关键所在。
近几年来,我国不少企业不断深入地应用计算机技术,PDM也在企业中引起了重视,不少企业对PDM技术产生了兴趣。
产品数据管理(PDM)在实现企业的信息集成、提高企业的管理水平及产品开发效率等方面的意义是十分巨大的,我国许多大中型企业都已充分认识到了这一点,但目前国内PDM的应用还比较薄弱,因此,探索PDM实施的成功经验和实施的方法学,对推进PDM的应用具有很重要的意义。

据国外资料统计,PDM的应用能使产品设计过程缩短25%,减少工程设计修改4%,加快产品投放市场进度50-80%,总成本削减25%以上。
国外的一些汽车、飞机公司实施PDM系统后的均大大提高了企业的效益。
随着中国信息化进和的发展,国内应用PDM系统的企业也越来越多,PDM产口的开发与应用进入了快速发展的时期。
目前,尽管国产PDM产品在功能、性能及稳定性方面与国外软件还有差距,但在适应企业需求、价格及技术支持等方面已经具有了一定的优势相信随着国内PDM产生厂家的不断努力国产PDM产品会有更加美好的发展前景。
