二、阅读理解
After I visited my elder sister’s house, I was reminded just how different the apartment living with a child was. She has a nice big house with a few floors, a big backyard and lots of toys. Her house is my son Tom’s little piece of heaven. At her house there are little toys, big toys, a doll house, a play house and more! There are bedroom stocked with train tables, ride-on toys and big trucks.
The main difference about being an apartment mom is that you cannot become a collector of “things”. I cont inually get rid of anything too large. When Tom was born, we made a rule that there would never be any stuffed animals in our apartment that were larger than him at that time. We also made a rule that we would only ever have at
most five stuffed “anything” at one time. So far this had worked out well for us. These rul es left Tom with a few special soft creatures to play with, but that can be easily put away.
Since we want to keep the appearance of being clean city dwellers, we have limited Tom’s play thing s to one toy basket in the main living space and one big storage bin in his bedroom. I am constantly thinking about living space when I buy anything for our little Tom. We love the storage bin in Tom’s room. It is filled with fun play things. It is a place to keep his toys and everything gets pulled in and out daily. Anything that doesn’t fit is often weeded out to create space.
Tom absolutely likes going to his aunt’s house and pulling out every single toy available to him. Of course, Tom does not notice that when he returns home he only gets one basket of toys instead of many rooms of toys. Right now Tom lives fully in his 1,100-square-foot apartment and seems very satisfied with his basket of toys. 21.By Paragraph 1 the writer mainly wants to tell us that her sister ________.
A. loves buying toys for herself
B. has several children
C. lives in a house with many toys
D. does n’t keep her house tidy
22.What does the underlined part “weekend out” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. removed
B. washed
C. stored
D. played
23.The last paragraph shows that ________.
A. the writer wants to live in a big house
B. Tom doesn’t like the toys in his toy basket
C. Tom doesn’t like the toys in his aunt’s house
D. the writer’s rules about toys work out very well
Disney World is a very popular attraction. But going there can be costly. Here are some suggestions that can help you save money.
Instead of eating at the park, get premade food from a nearby grocery store or even make your own lunch. Also, make sure to take your own water with you because spending $3 on water will make your stomach hurt. Another idea is to pack snacks or quick and
cheap pick-me-ups as you make your way around the park.
Of course you’re going to want to take some Disney souvenirs home with you, but you’ll quickly realize that it comes with a price. Before buying anything, make sure you have a plan. Some suggestions for keeping costs down include picking your own pearl at the Japan store at Epcot, which is all about the experience and only $15.95 plus tax, or even getting special tradable collection pin that you can trade with Disney cast members or other guests.
When you go to Disney World on rainy days, you may catch a lot of showers. But you do n’t have to. Go to a local Dollar Tree and buy disposable ponchos(一次性雨披)for $1. The ponchos at Disney are probably more durable(耐用的), but they cost $9. For a family of five, the Disney ponchos would cost $45 versus spending $5 at the dollar store.
It costs $17 to park in Disney for a day. Luckily, most non-Disney resorts offer free shuttles(来往的班车)to and from the park and all Disney resorts offer free transportation for guests as well. If you like to be on your own schedule without worrying about when the shuttle comes, then parking is your only choice. But waiting for the shuttle and going by a schedule isn’t really difficult, either. 24.According to the author, if you want to eat at Disney World, you can ________.
A. just take pick-me-ups to save money
B. get premade food at Disney World
C. avoid food that stimulates your appetite
D. prepare food before entering the park
25.What does the author think of buying pearl at the Japan store at Epcot?
A. It can be a terrible experience.
B. It enables one to get pearl at a reasonable price.
C. It’s a good way to find a tradable collection.
D. It’s the best way to get Disney souvenirs.
26.If you buy four ponchos at a local Dollar tree instead of at Disney, you can save ________.
A. $32
B. $36
C. $40
D. $45
27.The author thinks it is advisable to ________.
A. park in Disney World for a day
B. avoid going to Disney World on rainy days
C. use more durable ponchos at Disney World
D. use transportation offered by the resorts
Nature has its own way of balancing itself out, but when we humans get involved, we tend to throw things out of control. Forests and oceans are natural carbon sinks that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but since we’ve been pumping too much into the air, those sinks can’t keep up. Scie ntists at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, led by biologist Tobias Erb, have figured out a way to supercharge plants to make them better at absorbing CO2, which could be a key defense against climate change.
Erb and his team figured out a way to make plants more efficient at absorbing carbon, so that they consumed more carbon in a shorter amount of time. “If you think about plants, they are efficient CO2-fixing filters, but they are not fast, ”Erb said. “I think there is a chance to improve existing bio logy with synthetic(人造的) biology.”
Erb’s team identified 17 enzymes(酶) from nine different organisms, re-engineering three of them, that had an enlarged carbon consumption. When those enzymes worked together as a team, they worked better at not only plants’ natural enzymes, but also themselves individually. Existing enzymes in plants consume about 5 to 10 molecules(摩尔) of CO2 per second. The team of enzymes that Erb used consumed 80 molecules per second.
So far, these enzymes have only been tested in test tubes in the lab, but the next st ep is real world testing where the enzymes would be introduced into plants to see if the same result occurs. If those tests show that plants really can be supercharged, we could have a new tool in the fight against climate change where not only do we protect the amazing carbon-absorbing forests we have, but we also add these super
plants or an artificial leaf technology using the enzymes into other mixed fields. 28.Why can’t forests and oceans balance nature?
A. Because oceans and forests are getting smaller.
B. Because a large number of forests are cut down.
C. Because we human beings give off too much CO2.
D. Because there are too many creatures in the world.
29.Which is the key defense against climate change according to Erb and his team?
A. To i ncrease the plants’ ability and efficiency to absorb CO2.
B. To make oceans and forests to absorb more CO2 quickly.
C. To reduce the human’s activities giving off too m uch CO2.
D. To increase the number of plants in the world,
30.What can we get from the last paragraph?
A. The enzymes have proved useful in real world.
B. The technology has worked against climate change.
C. The enzymes have not been used in the lab.
D. The technology may have a bright future.
31.This passage is intended to .
A. call on people to pay more attention to the balance of nature
B. introduce a possible way to better plants’ ability of absorbing CO2
C. analyze the cause and result of climate change related to plants
D. explore the possibility of using plants to fight against climate change
The First Hello
The man from the telephone department got off the bus, and made his way to the tea stall, wiping the sweat off his head, face, then slipping his handkerchief under his shirt to wipe his neck and back. It was a year ago that the phone line had been installed, six months later men from the public works department had come to put up the phone booth—a neat box-like structure, with a glass window, and wooden ledges, yellow in colour. And days after that, a painter had taken an entire day to colour in broad, black brushstrokes, the words: STD Booth, local and STD allowed.
No one could tell that the last word had been misspelled. Besides, he had taken the entire day. After he had a cup of tea, he left, waving cheerfully. And now months later, someone else was here again.
Everyone watched the man as he sat on the bench. No one said a word, and soon the sound of him slurping his tea filled the hot afternoon. A few leaves fell, heavy in the heat, and sometimes a car passed, on its way to the main city farther away. When the man had finished, he tried to pay but the tea shop owner who sat behind his steaming kettle and the washed upturned cups, waved him away.
“You are our guest here.”
So the man took his handkerchief out again and wiped his face.
They crowded around him as he shut himself up in the phone booth. When the children pressed their nose against the glass, he shooed them away, as he took out a shiny black soon changed to an excited yell as they saw him dial a number, pressing a finger into the ringed dialer of the phone and letting it go all the way in a half-circle.
A while later, they hear him say into the mouthpiece, “Hello.”
“Hello, ”the ch ildren around the booth took up the cr y, the teashop owner broke into a smile and the men waiting for a bus smiled and said hello to each other. The sadhu(印度的僧人)who sat under the banyan tree nodded wisely. As the sound carried, more hellos were heard. The women winnowing grain giggled as they tried the word tentatively, the shepherds feeding their flocks called out to their sheep, laughing as they used the word.
“It’s a big occasion, ”said the headman, in an awed(敬畏的) voice.
“It is.” agreed those around him. The telephone man emerged and handed over a small chit of paper to the headman. “This is the telephone number.”
The headman looked at it respectfully as if it were a mantra(符咒). The others around him read out the numbers slowly, digit-by-digit.
The telephone man was now too tired to notice the cheering around him. He knew he had to wait long before the bus to take him back arrived. As he sipped his second cup of tea, he remembered something else.
“Oh, you can’t start using the phone now. The minister will come next month and
inaugurate it. ”
No one said a word. No one was surprise. They had waited so long; a month more did not really matter.

64.Mobike, a new kind of public bike rental service, has been put into use in Shanghai and Beijing. With their great favour with city people, more Mobikes will be available in the future.
Personally, Mobike is a good service and should be popularized in cities. First of all, it brings people great convenience since they can ride a Mobike for a short trip without walking or waiting for a bus. Secondly, people can enjoy the service at a low price because they only need to pay one yuan per 30 minutes. More importantly, the service saves people the trouble of riding their own bikes and thus they needn’t worry about losing them any more. Lastly, if more people choose to ride a Mobike, not only will the release of carbon dioxide be reduced, but much energy will be saved as well. In a word, such a small act will make a great difference to our earth,。
