When Alesia Reuis was nine years old, she had an accident that left her unable
to walk for years. Now Alesia is telling the story of the first day she walked again.
I remember the very first time I walked by myself. My sister Alexis was in high school then. She was on the basketball team, and she was going to take me to her practice. She went to drive the car to the front door for me while I was sitting
in my room, but we were going to be late, so I said to myself, “Let me help her
out a little.” I decided I would try to walk to the front door.
Nobody else was home, so I had to do it by myself. I was a .little afraid, but
I wanted to do it, so I pushed up off the arms of my wheelchair and stood up. There wasn't going to be anything for me to hold on to because if I leaned over(倾身) to catch the table, I would fall. So I put my mind on walking and nothing else, and
I just took a step, and another one, and then about three more, and I was at the door of my room. I stood against the wall and started smiling. I was so happy I'd made it that far. I looked up to heaven(上天)and said, “Thank you.”
I stayed there for a minute. I was hoping I wouldn't have anything wrong with
my knee, so I practiced moving it a little bit, and then I started across the living room. I looked straight ahead, and I made it to the next wall, and I said “Thank you” again. Then I had to walk just a few more steps to get to the door — and I
did it! I said, "I made it, I made it, thank you!" I looked out to see where Alexis
was. She was driving to the house. She was so surprised that I was standing there waving at her. She laughed happily and gave me a great big hug.

Today’s Women
People like to say: “The hand that rocks (摇动) the cradle (摇篮) rules the world.” Or they say: “Behind every successful man, there is a woman.”
Now some women still like making their husbands and sons successful. But some women want more for themselves. They want to be successful as men.
Today the best jobs are still given to men. Even when women do the same work, they are often paid less than men. Some women want these things changed. They want to stand beside the men, with the same chances for success.
Now many American women are earning money outside their homes. More than half of the women at the age of eighteen to sixty-five have good jobs. In general, working women have more education than those who stay at home.
Among women with jobs, eight out of ten drive a car to work, and most of them often spend their holidays away from home. They like traveling by air. Women’s work had made several changes in women’s lives and in men’s lives, too.
But things are quite different from those in the Middle East countries.
In the Middle East countries, women have to stay at home. Their duty is to look after their families and do all the housework. They can’t find work out side. When they go out in public, they cover their faces with something and walk behind their husbands.
For the past few years the women’s life has been changing in those countries. Many women want to play an active role in the society (社会). Though working gives them few chances of getting married, many men still want to marry them in the old ways.
58. More and more women want to get jobs because______________.

C. because women can’t do as well as men do
D. but we don’t know why
60. If women have got higher education __________ .
A. they can get better jobs more easily
B. they don’t have to do any housework
C. they can travel by plane
D. they ca n be paid better than men
61. From this passage we know ___________ .
A. women have the same rights as men today
B. women don’t want to work outside their homes
C. more and more women want to play an active role in their countries
D. in the Middle East countries all the women stay at home

Future and Today
It is well known that everyone has his own dream as well as his own future. But do you know what future really is? I have to say that future is now. That is to say we must treasure every minute now. If we want to have a bright future, we should know how important time is and use it well.
There is an old English saying: “Gain time, gain life.” Then what’s time? Time is something that we can’t see or touch, but we can feel i t passing by. Time is always with us. When we are at table, time passes; when we play, time goes by unnoticeable. We always say “Time is money”, but time is even more precious(珍贵的)than money, because when money is spent , we can earn it back. But if time is gone away, it will never return. So, some of us even say time is priceless(无价的).
We should always remember: future is now. For us students, we should try our best to work hard in order to create a great future of our own. We should make the best use of every hour and be the master of today. We should do everything before us as well as possible. And never put off what can be done today till tomorrow.
As we all know, “Time and tide wait for no man.” If you waste today, you will regret tomorrow. So from now on, work hard. Tomorrow will be better, and your future will be brighter. Remember: “No pains, no gains.” Today’s hard work is the cause of tomorrow’s harvest.
