三. 阅读理解〈共两篇〉

I just returned from a trip to New Jersey. On the way back, I was stopped by
a traffic accident. This accident involved〔牵涉〕a truck carrying a load of dangerous materials that were leaking out. This meant that we weren’t going anywhere for several hours.
After being told by the policeman that we would be sitting there until the cleanup was completed, I got out of the truck to have a rest. Other truck drivers did the same. At one point there were five of us standing by my truck, complaining.
Another truck with two elderly people inside stopped near us. The man, Joe, lowered his window and asked why no one was moving.
Soon we were all talking with this couple. I said that if I had known about this, I would have bought something to drink, for I was becoming thirsty〔口渴〕.The lady, Anna, said that they had plenty of water and sodas in the cooler in their truck and offered everyone something to drink. While she was back there, she said that she also had plenty of food, and asked if we would like a sandwich.
After some urging from Joe, we each agreed to a sandwich. While Anna was making the sandwiches, she was singing like a songbird. Being close to 70, I guessed, she had a remarkable voice.
When she finished making the sandwiches, I saw a Mississippi License〔执照〕plate on the truck. I asked what part of Mississippi they were from. Joe said Biloxi. Knowing that Biloxi had been damaged by Hurricane Katrina, I asked if they had had any damage. Joe said that they had lost almost everything. Everything they had was in the truck.
All of us drivers tried unsuccessfully to pay them for their drinks and sandwiches. Joe said that their son was living around Harrisonburg, Virginia and they were going there. There was a home that was for sale and they were going to start all over there. Starting over at their age, we knew, would not be easy.
These people lost everything except the pictures and some clothes. These wonderful people and some clothes. These wonderful people lost practically everything they owned and still would not accept any money for their food and drinks. Joe said that it was better to give than to receive.

Good teachers already know the information that they’re teaching, but they slow down to explain it to you. With their help, you learn much faster than you would on your own. Good teachers take the time to listen to your questions and steer you in the right direction.
One kind of ant does all of these things, too, a new study has found. It is , in fact , the first time that scientists have demonstrated〔证明〕true teaching in an animal other than humans.
“One would have expected to see teaching in chimpanzees〔黑猩猩〕,but the first fairly strong evidence comes from ants, which is surprising and interesting,〞 says Bennett G. Galef Jr. of McMasterUniversity in Hamilton, Ontario.
The tiny ant Temnothorax albipennis lives in small nests among the rocks on the southern coast of England. Previously, researchers had been watching how these ants moved to a new home. They noticed that ants that know the way either carry their friends or run very close in front of them as guides.
The guiding behavior is interesting because ants run much faster when they are alone or even when they are alone or even when they are carrying others.
In their lab, researchers from the University of Bristol in England worked with colonies of Temnothorax albipennis. The researchers had placed sweet food six inches away from the nests.
The study showed that running with another ant took four times as long as running alone, So, just as teachers slow down to help you, ants were slowing down to help others .
Follower ants also tapped their antennae〔触角〕on the backs of the leaders, and the ants adjusted their speeds to stay together. These behaviors show a communication system between teachers and students, just like the questions you ask when you’re confused.
Moreover, after the lesson student ants often managed to find their own shortcuts on the way home. It is a sign that they had learned the neighborhood well during their guided trip to the food. The student ants sometimes even turned into teachers themselves.
All these activities appear to be useful for Temnothorax albipennis. Through careful teaching, ants are able to get others to a food source without having to lay down a scent〔气味〕trail, which might go unnoticed anyway.
