Research on the English Translation System of Chinese Museum Texts: A Case Study of Henan Museum
I. Introduction
Museum exhibition texts play a crucial role in disseminating China's cultural heritage and promoting intercultural communication. As China continues to integrate into the global community, there is a growing demand for English translations of these texts to make Chinese heritage more accessible to international audiences. However, the current practice of translating museum texts faces challenges such as limited resources, inconsistent terminology, and cultural differences in language use. This study focuses on the case of Henan Museum, one of the most prestigious museums in China known for its rich collection of cultural relics. The aim is to identify the problems in the existing translation system and propose a more effective approach to translate museum texts into English.
II. Literature Review
Previous studies have explored various approaches to museum text translation, including machine translation, human translation, and hybrid translation. However, these studies mainly focus on the technical aspects of translation without addressing the challenges posed by the cultural and linguistic differences between the source and target languages. Hence, this study adopts a socio-cultural approach to translation, which acknowledges the role of culture in shaping language use and meaning-making. This approach incorporates cultural adaptation, communicative competence, and intercultural mediation into the translation process.
III. Research Methodology
This study employs a mixed-methods approach, consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative methods include observation, interviews, and surveys to collect data on the current translation practices and strategies adopted by the museum. Quantitative methods include corpus analysis and readability assessment to examine the grammatical and semantic features of the translated texts and their readability level for international audiences. The data will be analyzed using software such as SPSS and NVivo to generate statistical data and identify patterns and themes.
IV. Expected Contribution and Conclusion
This research seeks to contribute to the existing literature on museum text translation by proposing a socio-cultural approach to effectively translate Chinese museum texts into English. The study will provide insights into the challenges faced by translators and propose strategies to overcome these challenges, including cultural adaptation, stylistic enhancements, and simplified language use. The proposed approach will not only enhance the quality of the translated texts but also facilitate communication and understanding between Chinese and international
audiences. Overall, the study will contribute to the promotion and preservation of China's cultural heritage and enhance China's soft power through cultural diplomacy.。
