第三部分:阅读理解(共20 小题;每题 2 分,满分40 分)
阅读以下短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最正确选项。
A
After signing an agreement to recognize India as a nuclear power on March 3 , US President George W.Bush might be expecting a little Indian love.
The agreement marks a major breakthrough for New Delhi. It allows India to access American atomic technology and fuel to meet its soaring energy needs ,provided US Congress gives its approval.
Yet many Indians have complicated feelings towards Bush and his country .
According to an opinion poll conducted last week by the Indian magazine Outlook, two thirds
of respondents say that Bush is a“ friend of India”.
But 72 per cent say that America is“ a bully(欺辱微小者)”,and 59 per cent responded that India has “ compromised on its foreign policy” to become closer to the US.
“ It's this unilateral (单边的) thing that makes people upset ;you want everything your way ,and as long as the world toes your line ,it's fine ,” says Anand Mahindra , owner of a computer company in New Delhi .
“ But you guys are the ones who used nuclear bombs in Japan .You used chemical weapons
in Vietnam. And you're the ones driving all those gas-guzzling (暴食) cars .You have no moral ground to stand on .Who are you to tell us what to do ? ”
Many factors bind America and India together-democratic traditions ,economic ties ,military
co-operation,and common views on the war on terrorism.
But Bush and his counterpart(对方) ,Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ,admitted that
it may take time for the two partners to become close friends .
The key to deepening that relationship will be average Indians . Many of them love American culture, but that doesn't mean they buy everything America has to sell.
“ Indianshave always felt close to America on a popular level ,to American films,to clothes ,to music,” says Dipankar Gupta ,an Indian sociologist .
“ But at the same time ,many Indians see America as too domineering(专横) .It's like a
wife who wishes her husband would give her more room to grow. ”
56、 What Anand Mahindra says (in paragraphs 6 - 7)shows __________
A、 his concern about the America-India relationship.
B、 his complaint about the foreign policy of US
C、 the difficulty of binding America and India together
D、 the impossibility of deepening the American-Indian relationship 57、
Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the article?
A、 After the signing of the agreement, India now has access to American atomic technology
and fuel.
B、 Most Indians think America is an unreliable friend of India
C、 There is a long way to go before Bush earns the love of average Indians
D、 Although some Indians don't love America ,common interests and stands bind the two countries together.
58、W hat would be the best title of the article?
A、 An agreement benefits India
B、 Relationship between US and India
C、 Different opinions on American -Indian relationship
D、 Friend or bully?

Some problems you might have with a friend are as follows:
New friends replace an old friendship .You used to walk home from school with your friend,to share everything .Now your friend is with someone else all the time and is always“ too busy” for you . Maybe an interest in a person of the opposite sex is causing the split.
You and your friend become competitive with each other. You are struggling to do well.Your
friend always does better. This time your friend came out with straight A's and then asked you
(with a bit of a sneer ,you think),“ How did you do?” You wanted to shrink out of sight.
One of your friends reveals a secret .You cannot believe your ears .Someone you hardly
know repeated the deep dark secret you shared with your best friend .Your friend told! Why has
your friend turned against you?
These things hurt you .They make you feel angry and betrayed. In each situation your friendship would feel threatened .When you are upset with someone,it is a good idea to go off by
yourself and sort out your feelings .Go for a walk , talk to yourself and look at what you feel .You
may want to cry ,or you may feel like punching your friend .Take some time .Allow your anger to
explode where no one is around to hear you .Then calm down.Think through what you want to say
to your friend .Do you want to ask for an explanation?Do you want your friend to do something?Do you want your friend to know how much you hurt ?Your friend may not talk about
the problem .Your friend may hope that the whole thing will blow over .In that case ,you will have
to deal with the problem alone.
It helps to stand back and take a fresh look at your friendship .You have been very close to
someone but it does not mean that you are linked together or that you own one another. There should be room in your friendship for other friends ,higher achievements ,slips of the tongue , and sometimes conflict is a sign that you need to change the kind of friendship you have .Instead of walking home from school together every day ,it may be better to play tennis or do homework together once in a while .Instead of being number one in your friend's life, you may have to
take second place to a steady boyfriend or girlfriend .Things will be different but still all right.
It also helps to put yourself in your friend's shoes .What would you do if you found that you had more fun with a new friend ?What if you got the part in the play that your friend had really wanted ?What if you told your friend's secret to someone when you did not mean to ? It is painful
to be the other too .
Caring about people - having friends - means you sometimes get hurt .Friends may disappoint you, just as you might disappoint them. But a conflict does not have to mean the end of a friendship.Often working through conflicts together can make a friendship even stronger.
63、 Which of the following could be the best title for the passage ?
A、 How to maintain friendship
B、 Problems with friendship
C、 Conflicts between friends
D、 What is true friendship?
64、 Which of the following is NOT the writer's opinion on friendship?
A、 Good friends can never be too close to each other
B、 Friends can also be competitive
C、 Friends should learn to appreciate each other's high achievements
D、 Friends may sometimes disappoint and even hurt each other
65、 In the writer's opinion ,when there's something wrong with your friendship ,it's better not
to__________
A、 explode your anger to yourself
B、 try to solve any problem with your good friend
C、 betray your friend
D、 close off from your friend for the moment
66、 The writer means ______ by saying “ It also helps to put yourself in your friend's shoes.”
67、A、 It's no good trying to be number one in your friend's life
B、 You'd better not laugh at your friend when he is in trouble
C、 imagining yourself to be in your friend's situation contributes to your friendship D、 it's good to share your friend's troubles
The underlined word“ punching” (paragraph 5) probably means __________A、 making an apology to
B、 speaking up your mind to
C、 hitting with your fist
D、 making a compromise with
D
I believe in the power of the unknown.I believe that a sense of the unknown propels
( us in all of our creative activities , from science to art .
驱遣 )
When I was a child ,after bedtime I would often get out of my bed in my pajamas ,go to the
window and stare at the stars. I had so many questions .How far away were those tiny points of
light?Did space go on forever and ever ,or was there some end to space , some giant edge? And if
so ,what lay beyond the edge ?
Another of my childhood questions :Did time go on forever? I looked at pictures of my parents
and grandparents and tried to imagine their parents ,and so on ,back through the
generations ,back and back through time .Looking out of my bedroom window into the vastness of
space ,time seemed to stretch forward and backward without end, engulfing (淹没) me , engulfing
my parents and greatgrandparents ,engulfing the entire history of earth .Does time go on forever?Or
is there some beginning of time? And if so ,what came before?
When I grew up ,I became a professional astrophysicist .Although I never answered any of
these questions , they continued to challenge me ,to haunt me,to drive me in my scientific
research,to cause me to live on tuna fish and no sleep for days at a time while I was obsessed with
a science problem .These same questions, and questions like them, challenge and haunt the leading
scientists of today.
Einstein once wrote that“ the mosttifulexperiencebeau we can have is the mysterio-us .It is
the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science
” .What did E mean by “ themysterious?”don'tI think h e meant that science is full of unpredictable or
unknowable or supernatural forces .I think that he meant a sense of awe ,a sense that there are
things larger than us ,that we do not have all the answers at this moment ,a sense that we can stand
right at the boundary between known and unknown ,and gaze into that cavern and be exhilarated (喜
悦 ) rather than frightened.
Scientists are happy ,of course , when they find answers to questions. But scientists are also
happy when they become stuck, when they discover interesting questions that they cannot answer.
Because that is when their imaginations and creativity are set on fire .That is when the greatest
progress occurs.
One of the Holy Grails ( 耶稣离世前所用圣杯) in physics is to find the so-called “ Theory of
Everything, ” the final theory that will encompass all the fundamental laws of nature. I,for
one ,hope that we never find that final theory.I hope that there are always things that we don't
know-about the physical world as well as about ourselves.I believe in the creative power of the
unknown.I believe in the exhilaration of standing at the boundary between the known and the
unknown .I believe in the unanswered questions of children .
68、 In the author's opinion , “ the mysterious” means all the following except_________
A、 a sense that there exist some supernatural sources we can have no control over
B、 a sense of awe when we face the unknown
C、 a sense that the mysteries exhilarates rather than frightens us
D、 a sense that there is something in the unknown that sets our imaginations and
creativity on fire
69、 The underlined words“ obsessed with” (paragraph4),can be best replaced by _____
A、 annoyed aboutB、bored with
C、 absorbed inD、involved in
70、 At the end of the text the author says“ I,for one ,hope that we never find that final
theory.” What he really means is __________
A、 we can never find such a so called “ Theory of Everything ”
B、 sometimes even some leading scientists can not answer children's questions
C、 a sense of the unknown will always propel us in all of our creative activities
D、 No theory will encompass all the fundamental laws of nature
71、 The text mainly talks about __________
A、 the author's unanswered questions in childhood
B、 scientists' effort in finding“ Theory of Everything
”
C、 the power of the unknown
D、 the author's curiosity about the unknown

For three days Mr.Bunter did not say a word .He looked at people sensibly enough but
seemed unable to hear any questions put to him.An officer remarked to the captain ,“ Those brass
plates (黄铜牌 ) on the steps of the bridge - ladder are very dangerous things.”
“ Are they?” replied Captain Johns ,“ It takes more than a brass plate to make an ablebodied man fall down in that way.And the weather fine ,everything dry ,and the ship going on a
smooth sea! ”
On the fourth day the chief officer looked better .He could hear and understand and
could even speak in a weak voice.

“You- were- right! ”
“ Bless my soul!” cried out Captain Johns,“ Do you mean you had a supernatural experience that night? You saw a ghost on my ship?”
Unwillingness, shame, disgust, would have been seen on poor Bunter's face if a good part of
it had not been wrapped in bandage (绷带 ).He tried hard and answered, “ Yes ,I have seen.”
“ And did it-- did it knock you down from the ladder?”
“ Come! Am I the sort of man to be knocked down by a ghost?”

matter, even the man at the wheel (掌舵的 )was frightened, though he couldn't see anything .He felt

like. Every man has his own ghosts .I stepped back . I don't remember anyth- ing else.”

B、 the ghost had hit Mr.Bunter and he had fallen backwards

One possible version(agreement):
Shanghai recently passed a regulation to forbid the use of Internet slang in official documents, news and teaching materials.
I am in favour of the regulation. With the popularity of Internet chat, using Internet slang is common among the young generation. But too much use of such slang sometimes makes it difficult for our parents and those who don't chat online. It 's also a dangerous sign that we youth don't know what real Chinese is and therefore we might be led away from the right usages of it. So a country's language needs to develop, but also needs to be regulated. The regulation of language actually preserves a country's culture. On the other hand, the regulation only forbids the use of Internet slang in some particular situations, but not everywhere. So it is reasonable.。
