My Trip to Shenzhen
Last month, my family and I went on a trip to the amazing city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. I was really excited because I had never been there before and had heard so many incredible things about this modern metropolis. Shenzhen ended up being even more fascinating than I imagined!
We took the high-speed train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen, which only took around an hour. I loved looking out the window and watching the scenery whiz by at ultra-fast speeds. When we arrived at the huge Shenzhen North Station, I was in awe at how enormous and sleek the building and platforms were. It looked like something out of a futuristic movie!
Our first stop was the incredible Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. Its unique circular shape and gleaming glass exterior made it look like a giant spaceship had landed in the middle of the city. Inside was a dazzling glass atrium filled with plants, water features, and escalators zipping up and down. We
walked through exhibits showcasing cutting-edge technology from companies around the world. I got to try out virtual reality headsets, see robots perform incredible tasks, and even watch a battle between robot sumo wrestlers!
Next up was a visit to OCT Loft Creative Culture Park, a former industrial factory area that has been transformed into a vibrant arts district. The old warehouses and factories have been turned into galleries, studios, cafes, and shops selling arts, crafts, and unique gifts. I loved exploring all the little alleyways and courtyards filled with colorful street art and murals. We watched some artists at work making ceramics, paintings, and sculptures. In one studio, I even got to try my hand at throwing a pot on a pottery wheel!
One of the highlights was taking a boat tour through Shenzhen Bay and seeing the incredible city skyline. The
high-rise towers seemed to stretch on forever,

Unit 3: My Trip to Shenzhen
Last winter vacation, my family and I went on an amazing trip to Shenzhen! Shenzhen is a big, modern city in southern China,
not too far from Hong Kong. I was really excited because I had never been there before.
We took the high-speed train from our city to Shenzhen. The train went so fast – over 300 kilometers per hour! I loved watching the beautiful countryside zoom by through the window. After a few hours, we finally arrived at the huge Shenzhen North Railway Station.
Our first stop was the Shenzhen Civic Center area in Futian District. There were so many tall skyscrapers made of glass and steel. We went up to the observation deck on the 69th floor of the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center tower. The view from up there was incredible! I could see the whole city stretching out below me.
Next, we visited Shenzhen Central Park which had lots of gardens, lakes, and walking paths. I got to ride on a paddle boat across the large lake. I also really enjoyed the Rose Garden which had thousands of beautiful roses in so many different colors. It smelled amazing!
One of the highlights was going to the Shenzhen Museum. They had so many fascinating exhibits about the history, culture, and science of the city. My favorite was the dinosaur exhibit with huge skeletons and fossils of prehistoric creatures that used to
roam that area millions of years ago. I felt like a paleontologist exploring for dinosaur bones!
Another day, we took the subway to the Overseas Chinese Town area in Nanshan District. This area had so much cool stuff! First, we went to Window of the World Park which had over a hundred miniature models of famous sites from around the globe. I saw tiny versions of the Pyramids of Giza, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, and more. It was like getting to travel the whole world in just one day!
Then we visited Splendid China Folk Village which showcased the traditional cultures and architecture of China's ethnic minority groups. Each region had its own village set up with authentic houses, crafts, food, and performances. I loved watching the ethnic dances and trying on the colorful costumes.
The most fun though was Shenzhen Happy Valley, a massive amusement park. I went on so many thrilling rides like roller coasters, drop towers, bumper cars, and more. My favorite was the Dive Coaster which did a vertical drop straight down from a huge height – I screamed the whole way down! We also saw an amazing stunt show with motocross riders doing flips and tricks.
Our last stop was Shenzhen Safari Park, which had a huge drive-through area where you could see wild animals roaming
freely. We saw lions, tigers, bears, zebras, giraffes, and more, all from our car! There was also a walk-through area with smaller animals like monkeys, kangaroos, and deer that you could view up close. Seeing all those exotic creatures was an unforgettable experience.
Throughout the trip, I tried so many delicious new foods I had never tasted before. My favorites were dimsum like shrimp dumplings and barbecue pork buns, as well as noodle dishes like wonton noodle soup. I also loved the fresh tropical fruits like lychee, longan, and rambutan.
I had such an incredible time in Shenzhen! It was a super fun and educational trip where I got to experience a fascinating modern Chinese city. I saw amazing skyscrapers, beautiful parks, intriguing museums, and exciting theme parks. Shenzhen has a little bit of everything! I'll never forget the amazing memories I made there with my family. I hope I can go back again someday!

Unit 3 - My Brilliant Hometown Shenzhen
Hey there! My name is Xiao Ming and I'm a 4th grader at a primary school in Shenzhen. In this unit, we learned all about my
amazing hometown. I'm so excited to tell you about the cool things that make Shenzhen special!
To start, Shenzhen is a relatively new city that has grown at an incredible pace. It was just a small fishing village until the 1980s when it became one of China's first Special Economic Zones. This allowed businesses to open up and international trade to boom. Now Shenzhen is a massive, modern metropolis!
I love living in a city with such an interesting history.
One of my favorite parts of Shenzhen is how green and eco-friendly it is despite being a big city. We have tons of parks and gardens like Lianhuashan Park that provide awesome outdoor spaces. The city is also a leader in using electric vehicles and renewable energy. My dad says this helps reduce pollution and combat climate change. It's so cool that my hometown cares about protecting the environment!
Speaking of transportation, Shenzhen has some seriously cutting-edge public transit options. The subway system is one of the longest and most widely used in the world. We also have electric buses, taxis and even bike shares to get around easily without a car. My friends and I love taking the subway to fun destinations like the beach on weekends!
As I mentioned, Shenzhen is very modern with tons of
high-tech companies and startups located here. Some major ones like Huawei, Tencent and DJI are headquartered right in our city! My older brother hopes to get an internship at a tech company when he's in university. Shenzhen is truly an innovation hub and great place to work in science and technology fields.
But don't worry, Shenzhen still celebrates our Chinese cultural heritage and traditions. We have ancient temples, beautiful gardens, delicious Cantonese cuisine and amazing festivals like the Spring Lantern Festival every year. My favorite is the Mid-Autumn Festival where we eat mooncakes and release colorful lanterns into the night sky. It's a magical experience!
It's hard to talk about Shenzhen without mentioning the incredible architecture we have here. From modern skyscrapers like the Ping An Finance Center to cultural sites like the Dapeng Ancient Fort, our city has a stunning skyline. My best friend's family is from out of town and she says Shenzhen's buildings are even more impressive than Shanghai's! I have to agree.
One quirky thing about Shenzhen is that there are lots of urban villages mixed amongst the high-rises where some of the old neighborhoods used to be. My grandparents actually live in one called Hubei Village. It's made up of little alleys, shops and
restaurants that make you feel like you've stepped back in time. I love visiting them and exploring the village!
Okay, I could honestly go on and on about how awesome my city is, but I'll wrap it up soon! I haven't even mentioned cool places like the Shenzhen Safari Park, Window of the World, or all the phenomenal shopping and dining. Shenzhen is truly a world-class city that combines heritage, innovation and fun in one vibrant place. I feel so lucky to call it home.
In the future, I hope Shenzhen continues developing in a smart and sustainable way. I'd love to see us become a hub for green technology, AI, aerospace and other cutting-edge industries. With our spirit of entrepreneurship and drive to be on the forefront, I know Shenzhen can achieve anything. I'm proud to be a young Shenzhener witnessing history being made!
Well, there you have it - my take on why Shenzhen is one brilliant hometown. Between the modernity, environment, culture, architecture and entertainment options, what's not to love? Thanks for letting me share a glimpse into my amazing city. I'll leave you with an invitation to come experience the energy and excitement of Shenzhen for yourself someday. You'll be dazzled, I guarantee it!。
