Legal English Course Design and Teaching Mode Research
Legal English, a type of specialized English, is a must-have language skill for those engaged in legal practice, especially lawyers. To ensure the quality of legal practice, it is of great importance to set up legal English course and work out teaching modes to meet the needs of law practitioners and students.
In general, a legal English course should include reading, writing, speaking and listening. These core skills are the basis for expanding knowledge and improving communication efficiency. Moreover, legal English courses should be conducted from legal terms, professional terms and specific phrases in English and so on. All these elements give insight into fundamental English, accentuate specific English phrases and expressions related to law, and in the meantime awaken an awareness and interest in English study.
With regard to teaching mode, there are three approaches for consideration. Firstly, traditional way, which is classroom teaching, lecture notes and exercises in the form of class discussions and case analysis. Secondly, home-based teaching, mostly electronic learning with video broadcast, teaching software, textbooks and exercises as teaching materials. Lastly, multimedia teaching, a combination of audiovisual presentation, open discussion, team projects and problem-sharing. This mode aims to provide students with more freedom, convenience, promptness and a higher degree of engagement.
In conclusion, legal English course design and teaching modes are of paramount importance for legal practice. The communication efficiency and knowledge should be enhanced through rigorous and all-rounded education. Furthermore, appropriate teaching mode should be adopted for different env ironments and students’ needs. Perhaps, the home-based teaching approach, which is the latest development, can assist law students and practitioners improve their proficiency more effectively.。
