It's Friday evening. My daughters sighed (叹息) when I gently took the iPads away from their laps. One by one, our screens were turned off. We lit the candles and sat down to have a big
meal.
We call it our "Technology Shabbat (科技安息⽇ ) which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Now most friends know they will not be able to contact (联系) us by using computers or mobile phones for 24 hours.
I first understood the importance of "Technology Shabbat" in 2008, when my father had got
brain cancer(脑癌).Some days he wouldn't feel good, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be
with him. When I was with him, I turned off my mobile phone.
Soon after, my husband and I decided to turn off all the electronic things for one full day
every week.
During our "Technology Shabbats", time slows down Our Saturdays now feel like
mini-vacations. We drive cars or ride bikes. We, with our kids, work in the garden, play board
games and cook meals. I feel more balanced, I feel like a better mother, wife and person.
Keeping a balance between the good and the bad of technology is important for my family. The technology makes it possible for us to share knowledge and funny ideas all over the world. But
the technology also takes something away from us. When we stay up late at night linking (连接)
from website to website or sending messages or e-mailing, we click, and again, and again until we
have overloaded(超负荷的).

As I walked through Beijing's Houhai neighborhood, something green caught my eye. Sprouts(⾖芽), mushrooms and flowers all came out on people's heads, standing stnught up.
I was
so surprised at the craziness that a lot of people have plants come out on their heads.
The trend(潮流) was a great chance for business. Merchants(⼩贩) stood on street comers' selling all kinds of plastic(塑料的) mushrooms and sprouts. Three yuan for one sprout, five for a
pair. Customers put what they bought onto their heads and walked off, and the sprouts danced happily on people's head. China Daily also reported that one Taobao merchant sold 28,850 hairpins(发夹) in a month.
The strange trend had been popular for 2 months in China. I wanted to find out what was behind the strange hairpins. I went to the 798 Art District to do some research, There were tons of
tourists with sprouts on heads, and a shopkeeper told me that the film Monster Hunt was the cause
of the popularity. The 2015 Chinese movie featured a cute little monster with a patch of moss(苔藓)
on the top of his head.
CNN reported in a different way: The idea of the hairpins came from a Japanese cartoon character. One smiling face has a pair of green leaves growing on its head. The trend was catching
great attention from all over the world. Major newspapers like The Wall Street Journal and The
Telegraph showed their confusion over the strange trend and they said they really couldn't understand why Chinese people were so crazy.
Some people think perhaps the hairpins are a symbol of the cute and childlike "meng" culture.
Others believe they are the symbol of the love for cartoons. I think maybe this is showing their
strong wishes to protect the environment.
Who knows? In fact, nobody cares about it. After all, beauty is mysterious(种秘的). What is it
on your head?

The 2015 Nobel Prizes have been announced. Sweden's Nobel Prize committee said the Nobel Prize for medicine will go to scientists from Ireland, Japan and China. William Campbell from
Ireland and Satoshi Omura from Japan share the prize for their discovery of the drug avcrmectin(除
⾍菌素).The prize for medicine is also going to Tu Youyou. She discovered artemisinin (青蒿素).
Artemisinin is a drug that has greatly lowered the number of people who die from malaria(疟疾).

Traveling has given me a lot of great lessons, and there is something I'll never forget.
1.Enjoy and learn from another culture.
80 about other cultures in school is one thing, but actually experiencing a culture completely different. 81 you're visiting art museums, or even just stopping for a coffee
in a
coffee bar, traveling shows you the people and lifestyles that are completely different from 82
you have seen at home.
2. Learn to live in the moment.
In school, we often 83 most of our time worrying about the future. What classes
should I take next term? Will I get a job after finishing school? Travelling, however, makes us all
stop and just enjoy the moment.
3.The world isn't as scary as you thought.
If you watch the news as much as I do, it's common for us to think that the whole world
is a
scary, dangerous place. But in general, most countries are just as 84 as the one you
live in
now. Danger is always out there, but something bad may 85 happen to you at home, so why let your fear keep you from going out?
4. Day to day problems aren't real "problems".
It's easy to be caught up(被困住)in your own little world. Some small things 86
having a bad haircut or spilling coffee on your favorite shirt are terrible, But once you travel you
find that your problems really aren't so terrible as you thought,
5. There's no place like home.
Travelling abroad is a wonderful experience, and it reminds mc that my homeland is absolutely
enjoyable. Living at home 87 it easier for you to forget something good you've grown
up
with, but once you spend a few weeks in any place outside, it's not hard to realize how lucky you
are.
