高考题型提能练十二 Unit 12 Culture ShockⅠ.阅读理解AThe word “labyrinth”,or maze, refers to a complex structure of interconnecting passages through which it is difficult to find one's way. The most famous labyrinth is found in Greek mythology (神话). Designed by Daedalus for King Minos of Knossos to contain the fierce Minotaur (a half man and half bull monster), Daedalus' labyrinth was so complex that he, himself, could hardly find his way through it and, having successfully done so, Minos put him and his son, Icarus, into prison in a high tower in case he told the secret of the maze. Daedalus and Icarus fled using the feathers of birds bound together by wax to form wings and fly from the tower. Sadly, Icarus flew too close to the sun, melting the wax of his wings, and fell into the sea to drown. The other well known labyrinth was a pyramid complex (金字塔群) of many courts in Egypt, built at Hawara for Amenemhet Ⅲ, a ruler of the 12th Dynasty (1844-1797 BC). There were twelve separate courts of larg e size — six in a row facing north, six south —and all connected by corridors (走廊). Inside, the building was of two stories and contained about three thousand rooms, of which one half were underground, and the other half directly above them. The labyrinth was described by the Greek historian Herodotus, “The Egyptians in charge refused to let me see the underground ones, as they contain the tombs of the kings. I did actually see the upper rooms, and it is hard to believe that they are the work of men. The mysterious and complicated passages from room to room and from court to court were an endless wonder to me.” The great Egyptian labyrinth fell into ruin at some unknown point and was pulled down. So great was the site as a source of building materials that a small town grew up around the ruins. Nothing remains of this great architectura l wonder today except the destroyed pyramid of Amenemhet Ⅲ at Hawara by the oasis (绿洲) of Faiyum.1.Minos put Daedalus into prison ________.A.because Daedalus could not get out of the labyrinthB.because Daedalus' labyrinth was too complexC.to punish Daedalus for Minotaur's escapeD.to protect the secret of the labyrinth2.We learn from Paragraph 1 that Daedalus and his son ________.A.both fell into the sea and diedB.intended to leave the tower by seaC.got away by sitting on the wings of birdsD.escaped with wings made by themselves3.What do we know about the Egyptian labyrinth?A.It had about 1,500 upper rooms.B.It contained twelve stories in total.C.It was built about 5,000 years ago.D.It had been Amenemhet Ⅲ's palace.4.The two labyrinths mentioned in the text ________.A.were both constructed for pleasureB.were both built for the kingsC.both have many historical recordsD.both include many courtsB(2016·哈尔滨市第三中学一模)Babies don't learn to talk just from hearing sounds. They are lipreaders too. It happens during the stage when a baby's babbling (咿呀声) gradually changes from unclear voices into that first “mama” or “dada”. The baby in order to do like you has to figure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.Apparently it doesn't take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more evidence that quality facetime with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD.But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy HansenTift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. They foun d that when the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The 6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8 and 10montholds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changin g back toward the speaker's eyes. But what happened when these babies accustomed to English heard Spanish? The 12montholds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to recognize the unfamiliar sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语)that shows babies' brains adjust themselves to distinguishing the sounds of their native language over other languages in the first year of life. The continued lipreading shows the 1yearolds clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to s tudy that this is “a fairly heroic data set”,says Duke University cognitive neuroscientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fascinating that he wants to know more.5.According to the first paragraph, babies________.A.might get its voice “mama” by lipreadingB.learn to talk just from hearing the soundsC.like to figure out how to shape their lipsmunicate with parents through gestures6.What is necessary in developing babies' speech according to Lewkowicz?A.Playing baby DVD nearby.B.Teaching babies to read English.C.Speaking with babies face to face.D.Speaking different languages in front of babies.7.Which of the following shows the right change of babies' eye gaze according to the text?8.What would be the best title of the text?A.Babies Have Different Methods to TalkB.Babies Try Lipreading in Learning to TalkC.Babies Are Suitable to Learn Two LanguagesD.Babies Can Easily Accept Foreign LanguageⅡ.任务型阅读(2016·郑州市高中毕业年级质量预测)Although most games have winners and losers, the goal of sports is not to win every game. They make their lives by collecting and selling used thing. Their children cannot go to school because they have not enough money to send their children to there. Why you think so many people still suffer from poverty now? The answer lies on the population explosion. This type of schedule is far too demanding for long missions on the International Space Station(ISS).ISS crewmembers usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible. Weekends give the crew valuable time to rest and do a few hours of housework. They can communicate with family and friends by email, Internet phone and through private video conferences. While astronauts cannot go to a baseball game or a movie in orbit, there are many familiar activities that they can still enjoy. Before a mission, the family and friends of each ISS crewmember put together a collection of family photos, messages, videos and reading material for the astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth. During their mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters. And as from early 2010, the Internet became available on the ISS, giving astronauts the chance to do some “web surfing(冲浪)” in their personal time. Besid es relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space. Many astronauts say that one of the most relaxing things to do in space is to look out the window and stare at the universe and the Earth. Both the shuttle and the ISS circle the planet several times each day, and every moment offers a new view of the Earth's vast land mass and oceans.31. What does the underlined word “mimic” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Find. B.Copy.C.Change. D.Lose.32. Which of the following best describes the families of the astronauts on the ISS?A.They are caring and thoughtful.B.They are worried and upset.C.They are impatient and annoyed.D.They are excited and curious.33. In the final paragraph, the author shows that astronauts ________.A.get more pleasure in space than on the EarthB.find living in space a bit boring and tiringC.regard space life as commonD.love to see the Earth from space34. The passage mainly discusses how astronauts ________.A.work for longer missions in spaceB.connect with people on the EarthC.observe the Earth from spaceD.spend their free time in spaceBThe more women and minorities make their way into the ranks of management, the more they seem to want to talk about things formerly judged to be best left unsaid.Consider the novel views on the subject of getting ahead. Coleman is black. He spent 11 years with IBM, half of them working in management development, and now serves as a consultant to the likes of AT & T, Coca Cola. Coleman says that based on what he's seen at big companies, he weighs the different elements that make for long term career success as follows: performance counts a mere 10%; image,30%; and exposure, a full 60%. Coleman concludes that excellent job performance is so common these days that while doing your work well may win you pay increases, it won't secure you the big promotion. He finds that advancement more often depends on how many people know you and your work, and how high up they are.Ridiculous beliefs? Not to many people, especially many women and members of minority races who, like Coleman, feel that the scales have dropped from their eyes. “Women and blacks in organizations work under false beliefs,” says Kaleen Jamison, a New York based management consultant who helps corporations deal with these issues. “They think that if you work hard, you'll get ahead and someone in authority will reach down and give you a promotion.” She added, “Most women and blacks are so frightened that people will think they've gotten ahead because of their sex or color that they play down their visibility.” Her advice to those folks: learn the ways that white males have traditionally used to find their way into the spotlight.35. The best title for this passage wou ld be “________”.A.The Importance of Being VisibleB.Roles of Women and Minorities in ManagementC.Job Performance and AdvancementD.Sex and Career Success36. The reason why women and blacks play down their visibility is that they________.A.know that someone in authority will reach down and give them a promotion B.don't want people to think that their promotions are due to sex or color C.don't want to give people the impression that they work under false beliefs D.believe they can get promoted by reason of their sex or color38. In the author's opinion, Coleman's beliefs are________.A.biased B.popularC.superficial D.insightfulⅣ.短文改错One day Tom and I were walking down the street while we saw an old man fall off his bike. He was badly hurt. Many people crowded around us. Someone suggested carrying the old man to the roadside, so Tom disagreed. He has learned first aid. He said that they ought to leave him where he was and checked him first. At that time the old man wasn't breathing. Tom asked me to call in the First Aid Center at once and he began to start the old man's breathing, use the mouthtomouth way. Within five minutes, the old man began to move little and doctors also arrived. They said that we had done was correct. Going abroad for studyThe other day I announced that I would go abroad for further study right after my college education. My decision evoked (引起,唤起) the immediate objection of my family:Why?Why should I borrow a huge sum of money for overseas study while I might receive the same education at home at a relatively (相对地) low cost? 1 First, experience is the opportunity for the reallife use of foreign languages.2 .There is no better opportunity to improve secondlanguage skills than living in the country in which it is spoken.3 On a university campus, foreign students are likely to come across their counterparts from different countries and areas and are exposed to different ideas and values. This helps me to have a better understanding of different societies and inevitably (必然地) see my own country in a new light (以新的眼光).Third, overseas experience, disappointing and painful as it may be,is helpful.A person going abroad for study often experiences much more difficulty-difficulty in adapting to a new culture and in dealing with all problems alone.Yet,the difficulty, coupled with the frustration brought on by culture shock,is a rewarding experience for one's future life and development of personality (个性).Although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff (回报) is worthwhile. For the benefit is not merely knowledge gained, but the experiencedesirable in one's personal life.根据短文内容,从下面所给选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
