One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen,
a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的) to the most
powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly,
unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out
hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and
I sat down to have my breakfast.
We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of
things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have
no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go
back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
"My I get you something?"
"A coffee wou d be nice. "
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted
another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and
headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
"How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?"
"The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of
hurchill Downs. "
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast,

Jack Lynch is an English professor. He was often asked various questions about the English language. Recently he wrote a book 7he Lexicographer 's Di'lemma, explaining some of the common questions.
The rules of the language aren't some official set of instructions
that are decided by a group of people. They are more a developing set
of habits that all come together into the common practices
of the speakers.
When people talk about proper English, they're really talking about
a variety of English. It r s wrong to think there is only one kind of correct English and any difference from it is wrong. Actually there are many kinds
of English, and the rules that we use to tell different kinds of English
apart are more like table manners or fashion. They are just sets of
behaviors that are shared by a group of people.
People have been speaking something we can call English for about
fifteen hundred years. At first, it would sound a lot more like German
to a modern speaker. For the first twelve hundred years of the languager ‘ s history, no one was particularly upset about how most people spoke.
Now, everyone recognizes some people who speak better than others, just as some people dress better than others and dance and sing better than others. It was only around the year seventeen hundred that people began getting concerned and began making rules for the way everyone must speak.
Some languages have never been bothered with this sort of thing at all.
But for many of the major European languages, there are offcial,
govemment-sponsored(政府资助的)academies that determine what the proper form of the language is. Tiere's nothing like that in any
English-speaking country.
Every language changes all the time and English is no exception. That ‘s simply a fact of life and you can like that or you can be upset about
it, but you have to accept it.
28. Why did Jack Lynch write the book The Lexi-cographer's Dilemma?
A. To explain the results of his recent study.
B. To prove that English is still developing fast.
C. To show English is still very popular with worldwide speakers.
D. To explain some of the commonly asked questions about English.
29. From Paragraphs 2 and 3, we can learn that .
A. the rules of languages are decided by some people
B. any difference from the "proper" English is wrong
C. English rules are the same as table manners or fashion
D. English has different rules shared by different speakers
30. What can be inferred from Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. English has a history of about l,500 years.
B. English had a great influence on German.
C. Rules for English have existed since the 18th century.
D. There were no rules for English in the first half of its history.
31. In Jack Lynch's opinion, language changes are . .
A. upsetting and acceptable
B. natural and unavoidable
C. upsetting and gradual
D. simple and acceptable

Did you have a very strict teacher at school? I did. l'II never forget 'M r. Strict'. If you didn't get your geography right, you would wish to run to the end of the earth
to be far away from him. That tall man with a very loud voice knew how to frighten you and put the fear of God into you. Nobody dared to be late for his class. No one dared to chat in his class no matter how boring the subject was. And not even the naughtiest pupil would dream of cheating in his tests.
lthought about my old teacher when I read about a new government program in England to train former soldiers with no degrees to become a teacher. They
can act either as secondary school subject teachers or as primary teachers. From
next January those selected for the program will earn a salary and train
on-the-job four days a week and one day at university. In two years they will be considered 'newly qualified teachers'.
Education Minister David Laws said: "We know that our highly-skilled
soldiers can inspire young people." He believes that values in the army such
as leadership, discipline(纪律), energy and teamwork would benefit children.
But not everybody is happy with the government plans. Brian Lightman, from an organisation called the Association of School and College Leaders, thinks the training offered to the former soldiers who wa nt to be teachers is not enough.
Christine Blower, of the National Union of Teachers, believes that teachers need to understand how children develop. According to her, teachers need a high level of education themselves and thorough teacher training before they can educate the young.
l'm not sure how much 'Mr. Strict' knew about child development. What l know
is how happy he was when we did well.r¨never forget the broad smile on his face when I got a very high mark. My teacher was a soldier, but to me his smile was
a medal for bravery in our war against ignorance(无知)!
32. Which of the following is true according to the first pa ragraph?
A. Students would still fall asleep in the class of "Mr. Strict".
B. Only the naughty students would talk with each other in the class of "Mr.
Strict".
C. "Mr. Strict" often played tricks on his students in a very loud voice.
D. If Mr. Strict's class was boring, his students would still listen to him carefully.
33. What does the new government program in England want to do?
A. To train more excellent soldiers.
B. To change former soldiers into teachers.
C. To train teachers to teach better
D. To increase the employment rate
34. Who supports the new government program in England?
A. Mr. Strict
B.David Laws
B. C. The author himself D.Brian Lightman
35. According to Christine Blower,____.
A. the English government should stop the program.
B. teachers should often receive regular training
C. teachers should know about child development
D. only those who receive high education can be teachers
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中
有两项为多余选项。

Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary, see grammar
in action and develop your understanding of a language. 36
For beginners, I would recommend starting with something short and
simple. Avoid the classics for now they often use very old English words
and can involve complex(复杂的)themes. Children's books are a great
place to start..37.Dr Seuss writes his books in thyme(押韵)and they
are all very funny. Starting with something like this means you are more
likely to finish the book and want to read more.
38 The book isn't too long and if you've seen the film it may be
easier to follow. If you like reading about historical events, Anne Holm’s
I am David is a good read.
If you're not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl’s
Revolting Rhymes? _39一Or, try a very short book like one from Roger Hargeaves's Mr Men and Little Miss series. Although they are intended
for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic
vocabulary.
My final piece of advice would be to read something that interests
you. Look at the short summary of the book on the back cover and see if
it looks like something that you would enjoy.一40 This way, you' re more
likely to enjoy reading, rather than see it as a headache.
A. Dr Seuss's books are guaranteed to make you laugh.
B. The key to success is choosing the right book for you.
C. Reading can bring you a lot of fun as well as knowledge.
D.For more advanced learners, you could try the Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien.
E. Think about the type that own language and find one of that type in
English.
F. How much you can understand a book depends on your vocabulary.
G. This book contains lots of short stories, based on fairy tales, all
written in thyme.
