Two of the saddest words in the English language are "if only". I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, "Take the extra minute to do it right." I always try to live by the "extra minute" rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an "if only" moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don't only avoid those "if only" moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid "if only" in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say "I love you" or "I forgive you." When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say "if only" about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I'm doing the right thing. I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.(1)Which of the following is an example of the "extra minute" rule?
A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
(2)The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______.
A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor
B.meet her father who was already an old man
C.join in the holiday celebration of the company
D.finish her work before the deadline approached
(3)The underlined word "foregone" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A.abandoned
cked
C.avoided
D.taken
(4)What is the best title for the passage?
A.To Keep Emotional Well-being
B.To Prevent "If Only" Moments
C.To Follow the Most Useful Rule
D.To Achieve the Peace of Mind
【答案】(1)D
(2)B
(3)A
(4)B
根据第三段中的“But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't giv e up an opportunity to see him.”
A 3-year-old boy who was lost in the woods for two days is now safe at home with his family. But Casey Hathaway told his rescuers that he was not alone in the rainy, freezing cold woods. He said he was with a friend — a bear.
The child went missing on January 22. He was playing with friends at his grandmother's house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned home but Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police. Police formed a search and rescue team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and still — no Casey.
Then on January 24, someone called the police saying he heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar. He was in good health. Casey told the rescuers that he had hung out with a
black bear for two days, a bear he called his "friend".
Sheriff Chip Hughes spoke with reporters from several news agencies. He said Casey did not say how he was able to survive in the woods for three days in the cold, rainy weather. However, the sheriff said, "He did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear that was with him."
Hundreds of people helped in the search and rescue efforts, including some 600 volunteers, federal police and members of the military. Officer Hughes told reporters that at no point did he think Casey had been kidnapped.
His mother Brittany Hathaway talked with reporters from a local news agency and thanked everyone who joined the search for her son. "We just want to tell everybody that we're very thankful that you took the time out to search for Casey and prayed for him, and he's good," said his mother. "He is good, he is up and talking. He's al ready asked to watch Netflix. So, he's good …"(1)When did Casey get lost?
A. On January 24.
B. After a 911 call.
C. Before his playmates came.
D. After he left his grandmother's house.
(2)What can we know about the boy?
A. He survived with the help of a bear.
B. The rescuers rescued him from a bear.
C. Someone offered key information to find him.
D. He was eventually found by officer Hughes.
(3)Why did the mother say that in the last paragraph?
A. To report the detailed situation.
B. To show her gratitude and relief.
C. To invite everyone to watch her child.
D. To appreciate searchers and the bear.
(4)Where is this text most likely from?
A. A news report.
B. A guidebook.
C. A diary.
D. An advertisement.

I grew up in a home with a mother who believes that vaccines (疫苗) cause brain damage, and
do not contribute to the health and safety of a society. The only shot I received was for tetanus
(破伤风) when I was two months old. After that, nothing.
At the beginning of each school year, I was very nervous. Delayed term paper? Mischievous (捣
蛋的) behavior? Late for school? None of them. I'd be pulled out of class and brought to the headmaster's office. The school doctor would tell me I hadn't received any of the necessary shots
to attend school. But the same thing occurred each time: my mom would free me from the shots
and nothing would happen.
After doing a lot of research, I found although people who don't vaccinate their children make
up only a relatively small group, they can cause major consequences. People who, for health or
age reasons, cannot receive vaccines are at a higher risk of catching a preventable disease.
Eventually, I turned 18. In Ohio, where I live, I had to wait until I became a legal adult to make
the decision to receive vaccine shots. A huge factor in taking the step to ensure my health was
the message board website Reddit. Last November, I asked Reddit users for advice about what vaccines to ask for and how to go about getting them from a doctor. After my post received more than 1,000 comments, I made an appointment with my family physician. Despite how strongly my mother felt, I went through with it anyway.
I did something every person should do. It wasn't special in any way. Vaccines protect the health and safety of not only yourself but also other people. Vaccination is important because someone could die if you don't get vaccinated. This was the biggest reason I got vaccines despite
the opposition.
(1)Why was the author called to the headmaster's office at the beginning of each school year?
A. He was late for school.
B. He didn't behave himself at school.
C. He couldn't hand in his term paper on time.
D. He was hardly ever vaccinated.
(2)How might the author's mother have felt about his appointment with the family physician?
A. Annoyed.
B. Grateful.
C. Thrilled.
D. Guilty.
(3)What does the author mainly want to tell us through his story?
A.Listening to your mother pays off.
B.Doing the right thing matters.
C.Keeping fit is the best policy.
D.Asking for advice helps.
【答案】(1)D
(2)A
(3)B

I'm a single person and live with my dog. Jed isn't just my dog. He is my family. He goes everywhere with me. So I was overjoyed last year to hear that Bunnings was allowing dogs on a leash(皮带)- into their stores.
But no sooner had the rule come in than it was quickly repealed(撤销). A little girl in Victoria had walked up to a Jack Russell in a store and been bitten(咬伤). That was it. No more dogs.
I don't know the whole story. But here's what I have to say: dogs bite sometimes and kids are sometimes difficult to control.
There is nothing I love more than a kid who wants to touch Jed. But what's even better is when they ask permission first.
I was at my local dog park last week. It's huge, with an off-leash dog area to one side and a fenced-off kids' playground a good distance away. There was a family there that morning —parents and two young girls playing near the dog area. The elder girl started crying at the sight of Jed—" puppy! There a puppy! "Jed went right up and started licking(舔)her, which only made her cry louder.
My dog was frightened and tried to get away. The little girl ran after him, shouting loudly. The parents did nothing; they just let their kid frighten my dog and then said I should have stopped him from licking her.
While they had a choice to play elsewhere, I did not. So I had to walk Jed away.
"I just don't want to have to meet a dog when I go shopping," said one caller on a radio show yesterday. Look, I get that. But the thing is, I don't always want to have your kid kick the back of my seat for two hours on a plane.
When I lived in the UK and the US, I couldn't walk through the stores without stopping to pat dogs. Why can't we follow their practice?
(1)What do we know about Jed?
A. He is a troublemaker.
B. He means a lot to the author.
C. He is the author's only friend.
D. He often goes shopping with: the author.
(2)Why did Bunnings stop following the rule?
A. A girl lost her dog there.
B. Dogs were badly-behaved.
C. Most people were against it.
D. It wanted to keep its customers safe.
(3)What happened at the dog park?
A. The little girl was hurt.
B. Jed was treated unfairly.
C. Jed played happily with the girl.
D. The parents stopped their daughter.
(4)What does the author think of the caller's words?
A. Meaningless.
B. Hurtful.
C. Reasonable.
D. Touching.
【答案】(1)B
(2)D

Did you know that Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old, and could not read until he was seven? His parents and teachers worried about his mental ability.
Beethoven's music teacher said about him, "As a composer (作曲家) he is hopeless." What if this young boy had believed it?
When Thomas Edison was a young boy, his teachers said he was so stupid that he could never learn anything. He once said, "I remember I used to never be able to get along at school. I was always at the foot of my class ... My father thought I was stupid, and I almost decided that I was a stupid person." What if young Thomas had believed what they said about him?
When the sculptor (雕刻家) Auguste Rodin was young, he had difficulty learning to read and write. Today, we may say he had a learning disability. His father said of him, "I have an idiot (白痴) for a son." His uncle agreed. "He's uneducable," he said. What if Rodin had doubted his ability?
Walt Disney was once fired by a newspaper editor because he was thought to have no "good ideas". Enrico Caruso was told by one music teacher, "You can't sing. You have no voice at all." And an editor told Louisa May Alcott that she was unable to write anything that would have popular appeal.
What if these people had listened and become discouraged? Where would our world be without the music of Beethoven, the art of Rodin or the ideas of Albert Einstein and Walt Disney? As Oscar Levant once said, "It's not what you are but what you don't become that hurts."
You have great potential. When you believe in all you can be, rather than all you cannot become, you will find your place on earth.

I am a taxi driver. One Monday morning, I had stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited until he jumped into the taxi. "La Guardia Airport, please," he said.
As always, I wondered about my passenger. "What do you do?" "I am working at the hospital."
For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.
"Could I ask a favor of you?" He didn't answer. "I have a son, 16. He's doing well in school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job?" After a minute, he said, "The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records." He searched his pocket and handed me a card.
That evening, I pulled the card from my pocket. "Robbie," I said proudly, "This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records." He read it out loud, "Fred Plum, New York Hospital." "Is this a joke?" he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened (恐吓) to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.
Two weeks later, when I arrived home, my son handed me a letter from Plum. He was to phone Plum's secretary for an interview.
Robbie got the job. The white coat he wore made him feel more important than he really was. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation (推荐) for universities. At last, Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College.

WISH YOU WERE MORE CREATIVE?
I want to ask you a favor. I have a pair of pants. Tell me: How many different ways can I put a pair of pants to use? Now imagine you're an architect. Same question. Now imagine you're Bill Gates. A scuba diver. A medieval knight. You still have the pants. What alternative uses come to mind?
What you just practiced--the conscious act of "wearing" another self-is an exercise that, according to psychiatrist SriniPillay, MD, is essential to being creative.
One great irony (讽刺) about our collective addiction to creativity is that we tend to frame it in uncreative ways. That is to say, most of us marry creativity to our concept of self: Either we're "creative" or we aren't, without much of a middle ground. "I'm just not a creative person!" a discouraged student might say in art class, while another might blame her talent at painting for her difficulties in math, making a comment "I'm very right-brained."
Dr.Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard University, has spent years overturning these ideas. He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to challenge the stereotyped (陈词滥调的) advice that urges you to "believe in yourself." In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else.
He points to a study showing the impact of stereotype on one's behavior. The authors, psychologists Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar, divided their college student subjects into two groups, instructing one group to think of themselves as "eccentric poets" and the other to imagine they were "rigid librarians". The researchers then presented them all with ordinary objects, including a fork, a carrot, and a pair of pants, and asked them to come up with as many different uses as possible for each one. The former group came up with the widest range of ideas, whereas the latter had the fewest.
These results suggest that creativity is not an individual characteristic but a "product of context
and perspective". Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.
Dr. Pillay's work takes this a step further: He argues that simply identifying yourself as creative is less powerful than taking the brave, creative step of imagining you are somebody else. This exercise, which he calls psychological Halloweenism, refers to the conscious action of "wearing" another self. An actor may employ this technique to get into character, but anyone can use it. According to Dr. Pillay, it works because it is an act of conscious unfocus, a collection of brain regions that spring into action when you're not focused on a specific task or thought. Most people spend nearly half of their days in a state of "unfocus." This doesn't make us lazy; it makes us human.
Imagining yourself in a new situation, or an entirely new identity, never felt so productive. You're making yourself more creative, and you're giving yourself permission to do something you'd otherwise feel guilty about.
(1)What's the function of the questions in paragraph 1?
A. To lead in the topic.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To state an opinion.
D. To ask a favor.
(2)The study led by Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar proves
A. creativity is an individual characteristic
B. librarians are more creative than poets
C. ordinary objects can improve creativity
D. your creativity is determined by yourself
(3)According to Dr. Pillay, Halloweenism works because .
A. it is an act of unconscious focus
B. certain brain areas begin to act together
C. people are in a state of laziness
D. all actors employ this technique
(4)If you want to be more creative, you are supposed to .
A. focus on a specific task
B. believe in your own talent
C. pretend to be someone else
D. turn to be right-brained
【答案】(1)A
(2)D
(3)B

What you just practiced--the conscious act of "wearing" another self--is an exercise that…is essential to being creative.“可知作者接着说刚才你所练习的--有意识地"穿戴"另一个自我的行为--是一种对保持创造力至关重要的练习。
These results suggest that creativity is not an individual characteristic but a‘product of context and perspective’. Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.“可知Denis Dumas 和Kevin Dunbar的研究结果表明创造力不是个体特征,而是"环境和视角的产物"。
According to Dr. Pillay, it works be cause it is an act of conscious unfocus, a collection of brain regions that spring into action when you're not focused on a specific task or thought.“可知据皮莱博士说,心理万圣节之所以有效,是因为它是一种有意识的分散注意力的行为,当你不专注于某一特定任务或思想时,大脑中一系列区域就起作用。
He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to challenge the stereotyped (陈词滥调的) advice that urges you to ‘believe in yourself.’ In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else.“可知想象自己处在一个新的环境中,或者是一个全新的身份,你会感到从未有过的高效,你让自己更有创造力。

Learning, Fast and Deep
Over the past five years researchers in artificial intelligence have become the rock stars of the technology world. A branch of AI known as deep learning, which uses neural(神经的) networks to scan through large volumes of data looking for patterns, has proven so useful that skilled practitioners can command high six-figure salaries to build software for Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google.
The standard route into these jobs has been a PhD in computer science from one of America's top universities. Earning one takes years and requires a personality suited to academia, which is rare among more normal folk.
That is changing.
Last month fast.ai, a non-profit education organization based in San Francisco, kicked off the third year of its course in deep learning. Since its foundation it has attracted more than 100, 000 students around the globe from India to Nigeria. The course and others like it, come with a simple idea: there is no need to spend years obtaining a PhD in order to practise deep learning. Creating software that learns can be taught as a craft, not as a high intellectual pursuit to be undertaken only in an ivory tower. Fast. ai's course can be completed in just seven weeks.
To make it accessible to anyone who wants to learn how to build AI software is the aim of Jeremy Howard, who founded fast.ai with Rachel Thomas, a mathematician. He says school。
