(Teacher gives the Chinese meanings and asks students to write the words in English. Then teacher collects the papers.)
T:Next I’ll see if you have learnt how to use the phrases learnt in the last period. Now make up sentences with the phrases on the screen.
(Show the following on the screen.)
contribute to,let down,attend to,be accused of,get accustomed to,refer to
T:Well.I’d like you to make a sentence with the phrase “contribute to”.Li Hong, will you please try?
S1:OK.I contributed to English Weekly some humorous stories last week.
T:A good sentence!Liu Ping.Would you like to make a sentence using the phrase “Let down”?

T:Very good.Now the third phrase.Zhang Ling,you,please.
S3:My neighbour helped me attending to my cat while I was away on holiday.
T:The sentence sounds good, but I’m afraid there is a mistake in it.You should say “My n eighbour helped me(to) attend to my cat while I was away on holiday”.That is,we can’t say “help sb.doing sth.” Instead, we should say “help sb.(to)do sth.”The “to” can be omitted here. Now,the next phrase “be accused of”.Who’d like to make a sentence with it?
S4:....
Step Ⅲ Reading
T:In the second period,we read a story whose title is “A Sacrifice for Love(Ⅰ)”.Today we are going to continue with the story. We are going to read Part 2 of it.First, let’s learn the new words in this part. Now read after the tape, please.
(Teacher plays the tape twice for students to read after the tape.)
T:In the second period,I asked you to guess what happened to Della when Jim saw that her hair was gone. Now read the passage silently. After that, you’ll know exactly how the story ends and how deeply the couple loves each other.
(Teacher gives students some minutes to prepare and then asks students to raise questions about the difficult sentences.)
T:Have you finished reading?
Ss:Yes.
T:Good. If you have anything in the passage that you don’t understand.Just ask me for help. (Teacher writes the important phrases and sentence patterns on the blackboard.)

Sentence patterns:
(1)couldn’t have done...without....
(2)Seem to do....
(3)I don’t think....

3.I don’t think it’s going to rain.
4.He stood there as if(he was) waiting for someone.
She opened her mouth as if(She were) to say something.
Step Ⅳ Discussion
T:Well,we’ve got a clear understanding of the passage. Now let’s have a discussion. You can work in pairs to discuss the questions on the screen.
1.How does Della expect Jim to react when he sees her?
2.What is Jim’s reaction?Describe his feelings.
3.Why does Della burst into tears when she has opened the package?
4.Where does the story take place?
5.Explain the title of this story. What does it mean?
6.Is the story humorous or not?How would you describe the story?
7.Would you recommend the story to others? Why?
(Teacher gives students some minutes to prepare and then asks them to answer the questions one by one.)
Suggested answers:
1.Della expects Jim to be angry or surprised. She also expects him to disapprove or dislike. But She does not see any of the feelings she had been prepared for.
2.Jim stares at Della with a strange expression on his face.He can’t believe what he has seen.He seems to be in a dream. He has a complicated feeling which he can’t express in words,so he just hugs Della in his arms to show his love to her.
3.When she opens the package and sees a set of beautiful combs in it,she feels both happy and sad, because she gets what she has longed for but she has lost her hair and it’s useless now.
4.I think the story takes place in New York, because most of O.Henry’s works are set in New York.Besides, there is a sentence in the passage “...the set of combs that Della had been looking at so many times in a Broadway window.”“Broadway” is a place in New York.
5.Before Christmas,Della sells her beautiful hair to buy her husband Jim a gold watch chain while Jim sells his gold watch to buy Della a set of expensive combs. The two possessions are very valuable for them. But they would rather lose them for the sake of love.
6.I think it is not a humorous story, but a moving story.Though Della and Jim are poor, they love each other so deeply that the readers can be moved to tears.
7.I’d like to recommend the story to others.I will tell the story to them or suggest they read the novel.
Step Ⅴ Writing
T:We’ve read the whole story “A Sacrifice for Love”.Now look at the four pictures in your books and describe the plot of the story. Then you can write a summary of the story and give your own opinion about it.Now prepare it for yourself and write it on a piece of paper.
(A few minutes later, teacher collects the papers.)
Sample writing:
Jim and Della were a young couple who loved each other very much. They lived a poor life. Now christmas was drawing near, but Della didn’t have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All she had was one dollar and eighty-seven cents, which she had saved by bargaining at the grocery, the bakery and the butcher’s.Della felt very sad and began to cry.All of a sudden, she had an idea. She walked to the mirror and looked at her long hair in it.How beautiful it was!It looked like a cascade of brown waters. It was one of the two possessions of theirs, but she had to sell it in order to buy Jim a Christmas present. After she made up her mind, she went to a barbershop and sold it for twenty dollars. With the money, she bought a gold watch chain. It was just for Jim’s gold watch, which was also one of their possessions. After that,Della hurried back home to wait for Jim.
Jim came back at last. When he saw Della with tiny curls on her head,he didn’t know what to do
except stare at her with a strange expression on his face. After a while,he seemed to awake. He took out a package from his pocket and gave it to Della. She opened it and saw a set of combs in it.The combs were very expensive and beautiful. It was just the right shade to wear in her hair.Della couldn’t help crying again. Then she took out the gold watch chain and asked Jim to give her his watch, but Jim didn’t obey.He told Della that he had sold his watch to buy the combs for her.
It is a love story that can move everyone deeply.Though Jim and Della are not rich, they are worthy of being admired, for they would rather make sacrifice to each other for the sake of love. Step Ⅵ Checkpoint
