At the bell’s ring
My mother had been in a deep sleep for three days. A "Do Not Resuscitate (不要心肺复苏)" sign hung over her bed. Every time I looked at the sign, I was sad. She was 88 years old and had had a long illness. She was still in her own apartment, but I had arranged for round-the-clock nursing care for her. I did not leave her side during those three days.
On the fourth morning, I asked my husband to pick me up and drive me home so that I could get clean clothes.
My husband and I decided that we would stop at the funeral home (殡仪馆) to make arrangements. The doctor had said that she would not last more than a few days at
most. We felt it would be better to make the funeral arrangements while we were still relatively calm, rather than after the emotional trauma (身体或精神上的创伤) of death had set in.
I quickly showered, dressed and threw a few clothes into a bag. Then suddenly I changed my mind about stopping off at the funeral home. Something inside me told me that we had to get back before it was too late.
The nurse met me at the door. "It's some kind of miracle!" she shouted. "Your mother's eyes are open!"
My mother was propped up (支撑) , staring straight at me. She had a questioning look on her face, as if to ask: "Where am I?" Or, perhaps: "Where am I going?" I have replayed that look in my mind over and over again. It looked like fear of the unknown. She needed the comfort of being in my arms as she began her journey.
I held her body gently, and softly told her how much I loved her. Then I felt that she was gone.
I asked the nurse how long my mother's eyes had been open before I arrived.
"Only a few minutes," the nurse said. "When I heard you ring the bell downstairs, I said to your mother: 'There's your daughter. Now don't die before she gets here. And she did hold on. She waited for you."
Something told me not to stop for anything on the way back to my mother's apartment; something told my mother to open her eyes when I rang the bell. It was some kind of miracle.

Jungle(丛林)country is not friendly to man, but it is possible to survive there. Besides the right equipment, it’s vital(important) for you to know a few important things about woodcraft.
A compass is always necessary if you don’t want to get lost. Although the su n in the day and the stars at night can also help you to find your direction, they are not always available because of the often very thick jungle rooftop overhead.
Keep calm if you lose your way. Try to decide how long it has been since you were
sure of your position. Cut marks on four sides of a tree, so that you will be able to see them from any direction. Except in an emergency, never try to travel through the jungle at night.
Whenever possible, it is wise to follow streams and rivers that run in your general direction. This may give you many extra miles of travel. But in the end it will save time and energy. Nothing is more exhausting(tiring) than hacking a trail through unbroken jungle. Bamboo grows along the banks of many jungle streams. Since it is hollow and extremely strong, it makes a perfect raft.
Finding water that is safe to drink can be a problem. Many clear and fresh-looking streams and rivers carry deadly germs. Such water must always be boiled before you drink it. Luckily, the jungle has many kinds of plants and vines that give water. Water from almost all plants is pure enough to drink. But stay away from vines that have bitter or milky sap(树液).
Many jungle plants also provide food. Before you go into the jungle, learn to recognize the varie ties of plants that can be eaten. If you haven’t had a chance to do this, watch what kinds of fruit and nut the birds and monkeys choose. Such food is almost always safe for man. When you see an animal in the jungle, you can be sure that the source of food is somewhere close by. That source may mean for you a difference between going to sleep well-fed or hungry.
60.The underlined word “woodcraft” in the first paragraph most probably refers to .

A. learn ahead of time what plants can be eaten
B. catch those animals other animals live on
C. travel only along streams and rivers
D. watch the animals’ eating habits
63.We can conclude from the passage that .
A. the jungle is no place for us human beings
B. getting well prepared is a must for survival in the jungle
C. nobody can get out of the jungle alive in the dark
D. plants can provide us with both safe food and clean water

On the bus, every head is lowered to a cell phone, iPad, or other digital device (电子设备). But does this mean more and more people are getting into reading the digital way?
According to a survey, only 1.2 percent of Chinese people say they read a lot. But 38.6 percent said they read on digital devices like cell phones and e-books. This is a 17.7 percent increase from 2010.
Many experts are talking about a trend (趋势) toward fragmented (碎片式的) reading---- reading many short messages or items on a digital device like a cell phone instead of one long text in a book. Zhao Jianmin, a professor at Shanghai University, said fragmented reading was part of modern life. "The fast pace (节奏) of life leaves many people no time to sit and read a whole book," he said. "So making use of fragmented time to read is sure to be a trend."
Fragmented reading has its advantages. People can get hold of large amounts of information and knowledge in a short time. Digital reading is faster than traditional deep reading.
However, some experts fear the trend of digital reading will lead people to read in a shallow way. According to Xu Guosheng, chief of the Application Research Office at the Chinese' Academy of Press and Publication, fragmented reading makes it harder for people to reflect on what they read. He also warned fragmented reading could make people lazy about remembering facts because they know they can always just search for answers online.
"Fragmented reading is sometimes good, but don't let it occupy all your time," suggested Tian Zhiling. He said it was important to read quality books in a deeper way, even if that meant forcing yourself to do so. He said we read not only for knowledge and for practical use, but also, for spiritual satisfaction. He suggested people choose easy books first, then gradually move onto more difficult ones.
64. What are the disadvantages of fragmented reading according to the article?

B. They should spend days reading whole novels at a time.
C. They should read on digital devices but also read quality books.
D. They should read in an interactive and fun way rather than in the traditional way.
66. What can we conclude from the article?
A. More Chinese people read a lot this year than in 2010.
B. Students should force themselves to read in order to get high marks.
C. Reading on a digital device is harmful to people's physical health.
D. The changes in people's reading habits partly mirror the changes in society.
67. What is the main point of the article?
A. The results of a national reading survey.
B. An explanation and analysis of a new trend in reading.
C. The worldwide trend toward digital reading.
D. A call to return to traditional deep reading.

I look in the mirror, and I'm not happy with what I see. I don't have a "perfect" face. I look in the magazines and all I see are girls with fair hair, blue eyes, and, of course, a-pretty little nose. They're on the outside of the buses that I take home, the television programs I watch, and the billboards I walk under. Almost every advertisement I see shows this human physical "perfection". These billboards not only tell me what to drink, but also how to look.
Our society place more importance on a person's physical beauty, rather than their ability, honesty and character. We have influenced women to go through painful surgeries(手术)and starve themselves to become this society constructed physical model. To be a beautiful woman in the 21st century doesn't mean that you are a brilliant doctor or caring mother. It means you have the perfect jaw structure, eyes and lips. It means that you can be six feet tall and weigh one hundred and ten pounds.
But what about the women who are starting to leave their youth? Instead of looking at aging as a sign of wisdom, we try to prevent the aging process(过程). It's a kind of funny thing to want to look eighteen when fifty. Fifty is a relaxed age, when you can step back and look at all you've achieved(successfully complete something). It is when your hard work pays off. Unfortunately, our society just sees you as “old”. To stop the aging process, women buy wrinkle creams, do eye lifts and face lifts. They spend thousands of dollars to win the hopeless battle against age.
I remember when I was about thirteen years old and going through teens, I had oily hair, and a half developed body. I hated the way I looked. I used to cry to my mother all the time, but she would just laugh and tell me that "you don't want anyone to like your appearance. It's your heart that is important, because beauty fades."
I knew that she was right. If you work on your heart enough, people will start to see the beauty in you, which lasts and remains on even after you die.
68. The main idea of the first paragraph is that .
A. the author doesn't have a perfect face
B. women have to look beautiful
C. photos of beautiful girls can be seen everywhere
D. there are too many beauties in daily life
69. What's the author's attitude towards being "old"?
A. It's a pity that people have to get old.
B. It's a fruitful and wise time.
C. It's stupid to try to stay young.
D. It's a pity that society looks down upon the old.
70. It is that regard(s) the physical beauty as more important.
A. women themselves
B. the author's parents
C. newspapers and magazines
D. society
71. What's the author's opinion about beauty?
A. The author doesn't like the beauties our society values.
B. It is not important whether a person looks beautiful or not.
C. It is a person's heart and inner qualities that are important rather than the physical beauty.
D. The author feels appearance is important to a person.

“Humans should not try to avoid stress any more just as they would not shun food, love or exercise,” said Dr. Hans Selye, the first physician to record th e effects of stress on the body. While here's one question that continuous(持续的)stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging unexpected and difficult situations can be good for you.
In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but dealt with the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health. In a study at the Academic Center, researchers put volunteers through a stressful experience: a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test. Those who did well on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglobulin A, which is the body's first line of defense against germs(细菌).
Stress makes the body produce certain stress hormones. In short bursts these hormones have a positive effect including improved memory function. "They can help nerve cells deal with information and put it into storage," says Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York. But in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain.
“Continued stress is not good for you,” says Dr. Bruce, “it's the short burst of stress that could be protective.”
72. The passage is mainly about .
A. how to avoid stress
B. how to deal with stress effectively
C. the benefits of the short burst of stress
D. the effect of stress hormones on memory
73. The underlined word “shun” (Para. 1) most probably means .
A. cut down on
B. stay away from
C. run out of
D. put up with
74. We can conclude from the study of the 158 nurses in 2001 that .
A. people who can't get their job done experience more stress
B. doing challenging work may be good for one's health
C. stress will weaken the body' s defense against germs
D. people under stress tend to have a poor memory
75. Dr. Bruce believes that .
A. a person's memory is determined by the level of hormones in his body
B. a person's memory improves with continued experience of stress
C. stress hormones have lasting positive effects on the brain
D. short bursts of stress hormones increase memory function
