I’m not so sure I like my friends any more. I used to like them —to be honest. We’d have lunch, talk on the phone or exchange e-mails, and they all seemed normal enough. But then came Facebook and I was introduced to a sad fact: many of my friends have dark sides that they had kept from me.
Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via Facebook. No longer
hidden, they’re thrown in my face like TV commercials — unavoidable and endless advertisements for the worst of their personalities.
Take Fred. If you were to have lunch with him, you’d find him warm, and down-to-earth. Read his Facebook and you realize he’s an unbearable, food-obsessed boring man. He’d pause to have a cup of coffee on his way to save a drowning man — and then write about it.
Take Andy. You won’t find a smarter CEO anywhere, but now he’s a CEO without a company to run. So he plays Mafia Wars on Facebook. He’s doing well —level 731. Thanks to Facebook, I know he’s playing about 18 hours a day. Andy, you’ve run four companies —and this is how you spend your downtime? What happened to golf? What happened to getting another job?
Take Liz. She is positive that the H7N9 vaccine will kill us all and that we should avoid it. And then comes Chris who likes to post at least 20 times a day on every website he can find, so I get to read his thoughts twice, once on Facebook and once on Twitter.
In real life, I don’t see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They’re nice, smart people. But face to Facebook, my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong.
I’m left with a dilemma. Who is my real friend? Is it the Liz I have lunch with or the anti-vaccine madman on Facebook? Is it the Fred I can grab a sandwich with or the Fred who weeps if he’s at a party and the wine isn’t up to his standards?
56. What’s And y probably busy in doing now?
A. He’s running his company.
B. He’s playing golf all day.
C. He’s looking for another job.
D. He’s playing computer games.

Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick, just strangely sad. The lion had just lain down beside him, his head warm on Bertie’s feet, when Father cleared his throat and began, “You’ll soon be eight, Bertie. A boy needs a proper education. We’ve found the right place for you, a school near Salisb ury in England. ”
His heart filled with a terrible fear, all Bertie could think of was his white lion. “But the lion,” he cried, “What about the lion?”
“I’m afraid there’s something else I have to tell you, ” his father said. Looking across at Bertie’s mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus owner from France, who was over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.
“No! You can’t send him to a circus!” said Bertie. “People will come to see him. He’ll be shut up behind bars. I promised him he never would be. And they will laugh at him. He’d rather die. Any animal would ! ” But as he looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.
Bertie felt completely betrayed. He wai ted until he heard his father’s deep breathing next door. With his white lion at his heels, he crept downstairs in his pyjamas, took down his father’s rifle from the rack and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion’s neck. The time had come.
“Be wild now”,he whispered. “You’ve got to be wild. Don’t ever come home. All my life I’ll think of you. I promise I will. ” He buried his head in the lion’s neck. Then, Bertie clambered down the hill and
walked away.
When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned, stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.
There was only one thing left to do. With tears filling his eyes and his mouth, he lifted the rifle to his shoulder and fired over the lion’s head.

We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections (感染) we think of as human infections started in other animals.” says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University.
It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to us. P opular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen’s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge o f them,” says Isaksen.
“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,”says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug may be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful. Monkey-pox doesn’t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.
67. We learn from Paragraph 1 that the pet sold at the shop may ___________.
A. come from Columbia
B. prevent us from being infected
C. enjoy being with children
D. suffer from monkey-pox
68. Why did Isaksen advise people not to have foreign pets?
A. They attack human beings.
B. We need to study native animals.
C. They can’t live out of the rain forest.
D. We do not know much about them yet.
69. What does the phrase “the wake-up call” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. a new disease
B. a clear warning
C. a dangerous animal
D. a morning animal
70. The text suggests that in the future we_______.
A. may have to fight against more new diseases
B. may easily get infected by diseases from dogs
C. should not be allowed to have pets
D. should stop buying pets from Africa
E
Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days
since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled—to $1. 01 per pack—smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit.
This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They’ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase.
The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.
In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. Charleston, S, C., where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation. The price was $4. 78.
The influence is obvious.
In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13.8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky, Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records.
Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans “who choose to smoke.”
That’s true, but there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting hooked in the first place, As for today’s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.
71. The text is mainly about___________.
A. the price of cigarettes
B. tax rate of teen smoking
C. the effect of tobacco tax increase
D. the differences in tobacco tax rate
72. What does the author think is a surprise?
A. Teen smokers are price sensitive.
B. Some states still keep the tobacco tax low.
C. Tobacco taxes improve public health.
D. Tobacco industry fiercely fights the tax rise.
73. The u nderlined word "deter” in Paragraph 3 most probably means.
A. discourage
B. remove
C. benefit
D. free
74. Rogers’ attitude towards the low-income smokers might be that of .
A. tolerance
B. unconcern
C. doubt
D. sympathy
75. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.
B. Low-income Americans are more likely to fall ill.
C. Future generations will be hooked on smoking.
D. Adults will depend more on their families.

M: Did you see last night’s television program on space exploration?
W: Well, I had intended to watch it, but I slept through it.
Text 2
M: I am looking for someone who has taken care of elderly people before. Do you have any experience? W: I’m sorry. My experience is with small children. I’m afraid I will not be suitable for the job.
Text 3
M: Hello, I was hoping to exchange a gift I received. This T-shirt is too big for me. Do you have it in a smaller size?
W: Unfortunately, we do not have it in that color. We have it in a smaller size, but only in blue, not black. Text 4
W: Bernard, there’s not much left in the refrigerator.
M: Well, I might be able to pick up a few things after work, but I have to be back rather late today.
W: In that case, we can just make do with a meal out at McDonald’s.
M: OK. See you there at 7:30.
Text 5
M: Hello, may I speak to Art Davidson, please?
W: Sorry, nobody by that name works here.
Text 6
W: Aaaagh!
M: But I haven’t touched you yet. What are you shouting for?
W: You are going to touch me.
M: Well, of course I am. How can I give you an injection without touching you? As soon as you’ve had the injection, you won’t feel a thing.
W: How do I know what you will do while I am asleep? You might rob me.
M: Now, let’s not be silly. You won’t even go to sleep. This will just freeze the area around the tooth so that you cannot feel any pain while I am pulling out the tooth. That is all.
Text 7
W: Hi, Clint. I’m sorry to bother you at suppertime.
M: Oh, Judy, it’s totally fine. We just finished eating. Won’t you come in?
W: I can’t. Our little girl Emily has come down with a high fever.
M: I’m sorry. Is it serious?
W: I’m not sure yet. We’re taking her to the hospital in a little while.
M: Is there anything I can help with?
W: Yes. That’s why I’m here. Would you mind keeping an eye on my son while we’re at the hospital with Emily? We can’t take him along.
M: We’d be happy to. Mary can go over to your place and stay with him while I finish up the dishes for her.
W: We really appreciate you helping us out like this. Sorry for the trouble.
M: Not at all. Isn’t that what neighbors are for?
Text 8
M: Hey, it’s been a while.
W: Yes, I’ve been busy taking care of the kids, and then we went to Canada last month for two weeks. We just got back four days ago. Oh, I already ordered some tea. Did you want something?
M: I’ll ask the waitress for a coffee in a minute. Anyway, I’ve been busy at the office myself. We had a big deadline that we worked on for three weeks. We just gave the boss our proposal two days ago. It was quite stressful.
W: Architects always work so much, and for so little pay. It’s crazy. When we were working together at Rob’s office, I didn’t mind it because I found the job rewarding. But now that I’ve had kids, it doesn’t seem healthy to me.
M: Wel l, it’s true. I don’t get much exercise, and my diet isn’t great. Takeaway meals aren’t as good as food that I cook myself, and sometimes I don’t get off work until 10:00 in the evening.
W: You do look a bit run down. You should at least get outside during your lunch break to stretch your legs.
M: I’d like to, but I’m usually busy. But I do ride my bike to work…

M: Hello, Miss. Would you mind if I asked you some questions? We’re doing a survey about fashion, and we thought you might like to participate.
W: Why? Do you like my clothes or something?
M: Well, not exactly. We’re interested in talking to people who look different from the average person. And your jacket and skirt are pretty interesting, definitely not what you normally see people on this street wearing.
W: Well, I’m kind of in a hurry, so…
M: We’re offering a ten-dollar Starbucks gift card, and it’ll only take five minutes of your time.
W: Oh…well, I guess I can spare a few minutes. I need some coffee anyway!
M: Great! So, why don’t you sta rt out by telling us your name, age, and a little something about yourself? W: My name is Tiffany. I’m 28 and I play guitar in a rock band.
M: Cool! Where do you usually get your clothes, Tiffany?
W: Second-hand stores. I always get stuff there. I would ne ver go to a department store like Macy’s or a popular place like H&M. The clothes there are too expensive, and they all look the same.
M: What makes your style different?
W: Well, I like bright colors that don’t necessarily go together. I like looking like a piece of modern art: I like to be seen, but that doesn’t always mean I try to look pretty.
M: I see. Now, I want you to look at some pictures of different kinds of clothing and tell me what you think…

Dear Borg Fence,
I’ve been trying to get in touch with you for weeks about my gate. You fixed it on September 29, but no one has called me back.
I was not able to be at home while the workers finished fixing the gate that day. Well, I came back to find that the gate had not been fixed properly. The problem is very simple: the nails are not nailed in properly, so every piece of wood is slowly coming apart. I know that this job was very small, but even small jobs should be done properly. Even though your workers had to complete another bigger job nearby, they should still have paid attention to my fence. Between my house at 1701 Coventry Lane and my mother’s house at 52 Ascott Circle, my family has given your company thousands of dollars in the past several months, and we deserve to be treated with more respect than this.
I hope this can be resolved as soon as possible. Please call me and let me know when I can expect someone to come out here to make this right. Of course, I would prefer to handle this quietly, but if you do not respond to this letter, I will be forced to take my case to the Better Business Organization and make a。
