V oice cloning is when a computer program is used to generate a synthetic(合成的), adaptable copy of a person’s voice. From a recording of someone talking, the software is able to then copy his or her voice speaking any words or sentences that you type into a keyboard.
Such have been the recent advances in the technology that the computer generated audio (音频) is now said to be shockingly exact. The software can pick up not just your accent — but your timbre (音质), pace, flow of speaking and your breathing. And the cloned voice can be adjusted to express any required emotion — such as anger, fear, happiness or boredom.
V oice cloning can also be used to translate an actors words into different languages, therefore potentially meaning, for example, that US film production companies will no longer need to hire additional actors to make sound-copied versions of their movies for overseas distribution.
Yet despite its obvious commercial potential, voice cloning has also led to growing concerns that it could be used in cyber (网络) crime —to trick people that someone else is talking. And cyber security expert Eddy Bobritsky says there is a “huge security risk”that comes with the synthetic voices. In fact, such a case was reported by the Wall Street Journal in 2019, with a UK manager said to have been tricked into transferring £190, 000 to cyber-criminals who used a cloned copy of the voice of his German boss.
Therefore, steps to deal with this new technology and the threats it brings with it need to be made. And firms around the world are in fact already doing this. Such companies can monitor audio
to see if it is fake, looking for tell-tale signs like repetition, digital noise, and the use of certain phrases or words. Meanwhile, governments and law agencies are also looking at the issue. Last year, the EU urged its member states to make “significant investments” in technologies that can detect deepfakes.
24. How far has voice cloning gone?
A. An accent can be changed randomly.
B. Speech features of a person can be copied exactly.
C. Words and sentences typed can be recognized easily.
D. Computer-generated audios can record emotions accurately.
25. How does voice cloning benefit film companies?
A. It popularizes their movies.
B. It reduces production costs.
C. It expands overseas markets.
D. It trains their amateur actors.
26. What does the underlined phrase “huge security risk” mean in paragraph 4?
A. V oice cloning can be used illegally.
B. Employees have doubts on their bosses.
C. People are forced to commit a crime.
D. Synthetic voice loses its commercial value.
27. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The procedures to detect a fake cloned voice.
B. The urges to increase investment in voice cloning.
C. The methods to improve the quality of cloned voice.
D. The measures to prevent negative effects of voice cloning.

“Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?” An old tale tells a seemingly unbelievable story of a magic mirror, but now the magic is no longer unachievable.
In August2018, news went viral(广为传播的) that the police had caught criminal suspects who attended Clinese singer Jacky Cheung's concerts. How did the police pick out the suspects among thousands of screaming fans? The helping hand is AI facial recognition technology. The low-key yet powerful tool is no longer far-fetched, but entering the world of China's top investors and companies.
Facial recognition is a technology able to identify a person from a digital image or a frame from a video source. Tang Wenbin, CTO of Face + + , an AI computer vision technology company in China, vividly explained the workflow. According to him, facial recognition is the identification of our appearance, including knowing the sex, age and identity of a person. You may think it is like a brain or a neural network. You use data to train it, and then, it learns the pattern.
Facial recognition technology has been traditionally allied with the security work but today there is active expansion into other industries including mobile phones, marketing and finance.
Chinese start-ups have seen the potential of AI facial recognition for simplifying and speeding
up tasks in multiple industries. And the market is now crowded and competitive.
China is starting the AI revolution and has made breakthroughs in facial recognition. “If applying AI to different industries is a marathon, the companies there probably have just got off the blocks.” said Tian Feng, director of Alibaba Cloud Research Center. He also thinks that in the future, everybody will be able to use AI as it will soon become a basic tool for work and life.
28. Why is the news mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To introduce a new tool for companies.
B. To show the magic has become a reality.
C. To prove old tales are based on true stories.
D. To describe the background of facial recognition.
29. Which of the following best explains "allied with" underlined in paragraph 4?
A. dependent on
B. compared with
C. different from
D. related to
30. What do Tian Feng’s words imply?
A. Many companies in China are researching AI.
B. AI plays a key role in companies’ development.
C. AI technology applied now is far from mature.
D. AI technology will be used in marathons one day.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The eye of AI in China
B. Effects of AI technology
C. Breakthroughs of Chinese technology
D. Facial recognition in security

Andean Condors(秃鹰),weighing up to 13 kilograms with a 10-foot wingspan, are one of the world's heaviest and largest flying birds. Spending their days circling the Andes mountains and nearby Pacific coasts in search of food, they manage to stay afloat (悬浮)for hours.
Though researchers have long suspected that the massive creatures conserved energy by using rising air currents to surf the skies, nobody had ever documented how infrequently the birds used their wings afloat. Now, a new study has found that the incredibly energy-efficient condors use their wings just 1 percent of their time - mostly during takeoff and landing.
The extensive research, conducted in Patagonia from 2013 to 2018, involved attaching high-tech flight recorders to the birds' 'wings. The collected information was too much to send back via the phone or satellite network. Hence, the researchers had to physically take back the devices, which were designed to fall off the birds after a week. While a GPS tracker allowed the scientists to confirm the recorders' exact locations, getting to them was no easy task given Patagonia's rough surface features.
After losing seven recorders for every one they took back, the team shifted their focus to younger condors, who tend to fly over gently rolling hills rather than the mountain tops frequented by adults. The 250 hours of collected flight data revealed that the birds flew for an average of three hours but flapped(拍打)their wings for less than two minutes of the time.
One efficient pilot managed to cover 172 kilometers over five hours without a single flap! The researchers say the large fliers consume the most energy during takeoff. However, once in the air, they can fly for long periods of time without turn ing on their “en gines". The scientists suppose that adult condors may demonstrate an even more impressive flight record than the younger.
32. What's the new study mainly about?
A.Feeding habits of condors.
B. Function of condors' wings.
C. Frequency of condors flapping wings.
D. Ways of condors' drawing on air currents.
33. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Indicate difficulty of getting recorders back.
B. Highlight condors' ability to fly high.
C.Present a research outcome.
D.Introduce condors' habitats.
34.Where did the researchers usually find the recorders afterwards?
A. Mountain peaks.
B.Gentle hillsides.
C. Wide valley.
D.Rough sea.
35. In which column of a website can we read the text?
A. Environment.
B.Nature.
cation.
D.Geography.

A New Trend of Micro Museums Is Making Science Portable
Science museums are amazing. You can see large dinosaur bones from the huge creatures that disappeared thousands of years ago or take a look at cells under a microscope.1
You can learn so much at a science museum if living close enough to one. However, for those who don’t live in a city, getting a chance to visit science museums is not easy.“2, their influence is limited. There just a ren’t enough science museums,” said Charles Philipp. “And due to the high costs, it's unlikely that we’ll be seeing a bunch of new traditional science museums popping up all over the country anytime soon.”
Philipp and his partner Amanda Schochet have decided to reinvent science museums by getting them small. They founded MICRO, a nonprofit organization that builds tiny 6-foot-tall science
museums, which are portable and replicable(可复制的). 3 They can get access to it for free in such places as waiting rooms of hospitals, libraries, airports and even shopping malls.
4, they made it with the help of a team of engineers and designers. Each of themicro museums has a scientific topic. The first museum is the Smallest Mollusk(软体动物) Museum showing the world of mollusks which has won great popularity as the only museum devoted just to mollusks. A second museum is the Perpetual Motion Museum that focuses on physics and engineering and will officially open next year. It asks why things move, and why theystop. 5 Hopefully one will come to a neighborhood near you soon.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下列材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
续写的词数应为150左右。
Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out?
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified,I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in
a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?"
“The thought hadn't crossed my mind."
"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class.”
Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me-You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏),
and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. A well- intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool,I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others
had climbed up.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
"Something must have gone wrong with him,"I thought to myself.

读后续写:
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, his head hanging down, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell he had no heartbeat and wasn’t breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I’m happy I didn’t take the easy way out.。
