A half-ce ntury ago, most mothers of young childre n in the Un ited States did not work outside the home. But life has cha nged. The Uni ted States Cen sus (官方统计)Bureau (办事处)said that
in 2002, sixty-four perce nt of mothers with a child un der age six were in the workforce (劳动大If the father also works, the n eed for child care is clear. The same is true if a pare nt is sin gle.
Sometimes gran dpare nts or other family members watch over childre n. But most worki ng
parents must pay for care. And they often have to pay a lot. The Labor Department ' s Bureau of
Labor Statistics (统计资料)says child-care costs for a full day begin at about four thousand dollars yearly. Many families pay ten thousa nd dollars yearly per child --- and more.
Some parents employ a person to supervise (照料)children in the parents home. This person is often called a baby sitter or a nanny. Sometimes this care provider lives with the family. Some care providers ope n their own homes to one or more childre n. These, and other, childre n
cen ters must meet the requireme nts of local and state gover nmen ts. For example, a care provider
can supervise only a limited number of children. The number depends on the children ages. Care cen ters must show that they are protected aga inst fires and other dan gers.
Yet once pare nts find a place, they cannot be sure they will stay. The care might not be as good as they hoped. Or the cost might in crease. Or the pare nts might eve n be asked to take their son or daughter elsewhere if the child ofte n bites or hits other childre n.
Child-care companies and religious organizations operate some of the daycare center and
preschools in the United States. Organizations like the Y. M.
