14、One windy spring day, I noticed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Colorful creations of different shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds flying and dancing. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them in control.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they rose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining (控制的) string and the cumbersome (笨重的) tail kept them in control, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” They rose beautifully even when they fought therestrictionof the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose(松散的). “Free at last,” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”
Yet freedom(自由) simply put it in the control of an unkind wind. It fell down to the ground and landed in a mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last”, free to lie powerlessly in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to stop lifelessly against the first obstacle (障碍物).
How much like kites we sometimes are. The Heaven gives us adversity (逆境) and rules, rules to follow from which we can grow and get strength. Some of us break away from the rules so hard that we never reach the heights we might
get to. We keep part of the rules and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.
Let us each rise to the great heights, knowing that some of the rules that we may be angry about are in fact the strong force that helps us achieve.
1.Why does the writer write the first paragraph?
A.Because it was the first time that he had seen young people flying kites.

A.anyone who wants no restraints is sure to be a sad end
B.what a pity it is that one kite flew down to the ground
C.man with freedom can’t be like that kite which fell down
D.the unkind wind is the cause of the fallen kite’s failure
3.What does the u nderlined word “restriction” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A.control B.freedom C.shake D.guide
4.In the writer’s opinion, ____________.
A.without restrictions and rules we can make endless progress
B.kites are good examples to those who want to get freedom
C.restrictions are necessary for us human beings

16、In Europe, small cars have always been more popular than large cars. In the United States, large cars and midsize cars are more popular than smaller cars. As a result, European automakers used to make different kinds of small cars while American automakers used to build bigger, heavier cars. However, these days, automakers in both America and Europe produce cars of different sizes. This is because most automakers export their cars all over the world.
The price of gasoline (汽油)is one reason for differences in car choices. Since gasoline is more expensive in Europe, many Europeans want smaller, lighter cars that will travel a long way on a gallon(加仑)of gasoline.
Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many European cities have narrow, winding(弯曲的)streets. In these cities a small car is easier to control than a large one.
For a long time, few Americans bought small cars. Instead they chose large cars, because these roomy cars were more comfortable for large families and long trips. Some people also liked the powerful engines(发动机)that large cars had. Since gasoline was cheap, drivers did not mind that the large cars used a lot of gasoline.
But in the 1970s, there were gasoline shortages in the United States. The price of gasoline went up. Though large cars were still more popular than smaller cars, sales of small cars increased. Some people also bought small cars because these cars caused less air pollution than larger cars.
Today, Americans' car preferences are still changing. Though Americans are still buying many small cars, the fastest growing sales are for certain kinds of large cars. These types of cars are called minivans and sport utility vehicles(SUV). They are very popular today. But of course, that could change tomorrow.

18、(C)The earth is not only, but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you. because nearly 70% of the earth’s surface(表面)is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water, or salt water. Man can only use the other 3%—the fresh water from rivers, lakes, and other sources. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers(冰川). Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today, the fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is becoming larger and larger quickly—almost day by day. We should take steps to do with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world-wide water shortage later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting ourvaluablewater, one of the first step is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system(下水道), from there it returns to sea or runs into underground (地下)places.
But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to remove the salt.

19、Now schoolyard safety is becoming more and more important. Being middle school students, what should we do to
keep ourselves safe?
Firstly, I think we should go to school or go home on time. If we are late, we should tell our teachers or parents. Secondly, we should be friendly to each other. We can’t chase each other in the hallways or fight with each other. That’s dangerous. Maybe we can fall off or be hurt. Thirdly, we can’t drink wine or eat food that goes bad. They are bad for our health.。
