Both my parents came from towns in Mexico. Then I was born in El Paso,Texas, and when I was four,my family moved to a housing project in East Los Angeles.
Even though we struggled to make ends meet,my parents stressed to me and my four brothers and sisters how fortunate we were to live in a great country with limitless opportunities. They influenced us with the concepts of family, faith and nationalism.
I got my first real job when I was ten.My dad injured his back working in a cardboardbox factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little shopping mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr Ben’s Coiffure.
The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m..To pick up rubbish,Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower.Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter by hand.It took two to three hours to clean the lot.I’d sleep in the car on the way home.
I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime.I acquired discipline and a strong work ethic (道德),and learned at an early age the importance of balancing life’s competing interests—in my case, school, homework and a job. This really helped during my senior year
of a high school, when I worked 40 hours a week flipping burgers at a fastfood joint while taking a full load of college preparation courses.
The hard work paid off.I attended the US Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degrees in law and business from ter,I joined a big Los Angeles law firm and was elected to the California State Assembly (州议会).In these jobs and in everything else I’ve done,I have never forgotten those nights in the parking lot.The experience taught me that there is dignity in all work and that if people are working to provide for themselves and their families that is something we should honor.

B.lived a poor but happy life
C.were lucky to move to the USA
D.had many ways to make money
42.When he recovered,to make a living my father________.
A.ran a small shopping mall B.did a parttime job

44.The author tells us in the last paragraph that we should be proud of those who________.

I am trying to muster (鼓起) the courage to toss_away my mobile phone to enjoy a more peaceful and ringfree life.
Can you imagine not having your mobile phone? In our hightech, inahurry age,a cellfree life is a hard concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now access the Internet, and many people feel the need to express their every thought on their blog pages. If I gave up my cellphone, people would think I was mad.
I wish I had the strength to toss away my technology.I have an office phone,a home phone,an email and if people want to contact me,they can.If I’m out, people can leave a message.Do they really need to find me?However,I’m a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Rings. The power of the ring is too strong and I can’t let it go.
Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy life. For most people, they ho ld all contacts and many of us don’t write up address books any more. The latest phones carry our music, pictures, movies and everything else.We feel lost without this device and when we do misplace it,we feel cut off from our fellow.
“Where have you been?” s aid a friend, who saw me a week after I lost my cellphone,“I tried calling you,but you disappeared. You disappeared off the face of the Earth.” See,when you don’t have a mobile phone, you don’t exist.
I’m not really going to toss my mobile phone away,in fact.We humans are such social animals and mobile phones serve us well.So in 2020,I’ve decided not to serve my mobile phone.Like all machines,I can always turn it off.

An Australian researcher is urging parents to load up their teenager’s backpack and make them walk to school.
Professor Leon Straker says students who walk or cycle to school are less likely to have back and neck pain. But the study of 1,202 Western Australian 14yearold found that 72% of students travelled to school by car or bus.Straker says the study suggests walking or cycling while carrying a
schoolbag helps improve trunk (躯干) and spinal (脊柱的) muscle strength.
This helps reduce back pain because greater muscle strength improves support for the back during load carrying.Despite advocating that parents get their children moving,Straker warns bag load should not exceed (超过) 15% of body weight.
Straker says the study also stresses that neck pain is as common as back pain among young teenagers. This is an area that has been largely ignored,he says, but can be an important indicator of neck pain into adulthood.
For the study, students were asked a series of questions such as how long they carried their bags for,how they carried their schoolbags, the method of travel, and their perceptions about the bag’s weight.
Straker says about half of all participants experienced back and neck pain, with slightly more females reporting neck pain. However, the gender (性别) difference may also be due to the fact that females have lower pain tolerance.
Studies from the 1980s found carrying a bag over one shoulder was most common among teenagers. However in this study 85% of participants carried their bag over both shoulders.
Straker believes the change has been driven partly through education campaigns, but also by increasing fashion status of backpacks and improved design.
49.In the opinion of Leon Straker, parents should________.
A.reduce the load of their children’s schoolbags
B.put more books in their children’s schoolbags
C.get their children’s schoolbags ready for school
D.ask their children to walk to school carrying schoolbags
50.If a child weighs 40 kilograms, the weight of his schoolbag should be________.
A.no more than 15 kg B.less than 6 kg
C.as heavy as 9 kg D.more than 6 kg
51.We can learn from the passage that________.
A.most of the students in Australia walk to school
B.neck pain is uncommon among young teenagers
C.walking while carrying a backpack helps reduce back pain
D.males are more likely to experience back pain than females
52.According to the passage, what change has taken place since the 1980s?
A.How students carry their schoolbags.
B.How heavy students’schoolbags are.
C.How students go to school every day.
D.How long students carry their schoolbags for.

“When one of the doctors criticizes (批评) me,I get defensive.I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I’m not wrong,” says Viola,a nurse. This is a common reaction to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.
Try to be objective (客观的).When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale,Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself.“I had put everything I had into making that sale,” Sol says.“And I felt that I had failed as a person.I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each fa ilure.”
Take time to cool down.Rather than react at once to criticism, take some time to think over what was said.Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person’s position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.
Take positive action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about
the situation. The best answer may be “nothing”.“I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there,” says Sheila.“His criticisms didn’t really have anything to do with my work,so nothing I said or did was going to change them.” In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job. However, that’s an extreme reaction.
You may simp ly explain your opinion without expecting an indepth discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn’t worth fighting this time. The key,in any case,is to have a reasonable plan.
53.When Sol was criticized by his employer,he________.
A.argued bitterly with his employer
B.was angry and gave up his job
C.was sorry for what he did
D.was sad and selfpitying
54.According to the writer, you should take time to think about criticism because________.
A.people may have a mistaken idea of what you did
B.you should welcome other people’s opinions
C.people may discuss it with you in depth
D.you need time to understand yourself
55.When the writer says that “The best answer may be ‘nothing’”,he means you may decide________.
A.to take no notice of the criticism
B.to argue with your boss
C.you need to change your job
D.you’ve done nothing wrong
56.The writer thinks Sheila might decide to leave her job because her boss________.
A.didn’t like her appearance
B.refused to change his opinion
C.made an unreasonable criticism
D.refused to talk to her about the criticism

1.D 2.C 3.C 4.A 5.B

10.A effect意思是“效果、后果”,常用于短语have an effect on...。

11.C be loyal to sb.

12.C two foreigners included=including two foreigners。

14.B would rather

17.B limit...to...

第三段中的“However,I’m a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Rings. The power of the ring is too strong and I can’t let it go.”

文章的第四段紧紧围绕主题句“Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy life”来写,阐述手机在我们生活中的重要性。

最后一句“Like all machines,I can always turn it off”暗示答案为D。

根据第二段的第二句“Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself”可判断答案为C。

结合上题的解析以及第四段的最后两句“In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job. However, that’s an extreme reaction.”

61.B 62.G 63.D 64.C 65.A
66.impression 67.position 68.beauty 69.official 70.preparation 71.scene
72.choices 73.degree 74.interrupt
75.custom

77.big前加a a big river一条大河。

78.was were 前面的主语为fields,按主谓一致原则应把was改为were。

79.√
80.house houses any of后的名词应为复数,因此把house改为houses。

82.去掉of 介词of多余,因此去掉of。

83.have had 主句谓语部分were very sorry to lose为过去时,而拥有木桥是之前持续的状态,因此把have改为had。

84.so but 前后句为转折关系,因此把so改为but。

85.than as我们对于新桥没有像老桥那样熟悉了,句中使用了not so...as...

As you can see from the National Day celebration, our country is undergoing great development and is more prosperous than ever before, which has urged me to study still harder for our country.
Thanks again for your attending to me carefully last year.I hope you can spend a white Christmas in my hometown. And please send my regards to Mr Smith, who helped me such a lot during my treatment in Australia.
