第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

After Mike had opened his gifts on Christmas morning, the 5yearold boy’s mother asked him which one of his gifts he wanted to donate to a poor child who had no gift. “None,”Mike replied. His mom explained that sharing with those who were less fortunate was part of the holiday spirit and how a child who had less would be very happy to receive a gift.
The day after Christmas Mike agreed to part with one of his gifts—a flute (笛子).“How will they know it is for a child?”he asked. His mother told him that he could attach a note to the flute and she helped him write one that read,“Please make sure this gets to a kid who doesn’t have toys.”
On his tenth Christmas Mike looked over his three inexpensive gifts. His mother told him this year he didn’t have to part with a gift. He told her he wanted to. She gave him a big hug with tears in her eyes.
The gift giving tradition continued into adulthood. Mike had not missed a Christmas in over 30 years. One Christmas Mike’s own 5yearold boy asked,“What was the best gift you got for Christmas when you were a kid?”He explained to his son that the best gift he ever received didn’t come in a box,and you couldn’t even hold it in your hand. Just imagine the happy looks on the faces of the children as they open the gifts you sent them.
The following day when Mike was getting ready for the drive to the donation box,his son came running out with a new toy in his hands. “Dad,I want to part with the toy;can you help me write a note?”
Material gifts can be precious but the greatest gifts that we can give to children can’t be purchased at the mall. We should let children learn to share and help others in need.

C.The best gift Mike ever received was the joy of helping others
D.Mike’s son was too young to u nderstand the meaning of sharing

Special Bridges Help Animals Cross the Road
--- Reported by Sheila Carrick
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more concerned with how the grizzly bear and mountain lion can cross the road.
Millions of animals die each year on U. S. roads, the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U. S. today. The main reason? Roadkill.
"Ecopassages" may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads. "These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can escape being killed," said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Conservation Society.
But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lion used the passage.
Builders of some ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals such as grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal overpass!
59. The writer uses the example of “ocelots” to show that ______.
A. wild animals have become more dangerous
B. the driving conditions have improved greatly
C. the measure for protecting wildlife fails to work
D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents
60. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is _______.
A. an underground path for cars
B. a fence built for the safety of the area
C. a bridge for animals to get over a river
D. a pass for animals to cross the road
61. When the writer says that animals seem “to be catching on”, he means _______.
A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road
B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages
C. animals are crossing the road in groups
D. animals are increasing in number
62. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because ________.
A. wild animals may attack cars
B. wild animals may jam the road
C. they may see wild animals in the park
D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages
C
A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources (资源): land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.
There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the world’ s wood supply.
Rainforests are often called the world’s drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of
rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.
63.Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they________.
A. reflect more heat into the atmosphere
B. bring about high rainfall throughout the world
C. rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃
D. reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth
64.What does the word “this” underlined in the third paragraph refer to?
A. We will lose much more than we can gain.
B. Humans have begun destroying rainforests.
C. People have a strong desire for resources.
D. Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests.
65.It can be inferred from the text that________.
A. we can get enough resources without rainforests
B. there is great medicine potential(潜力) in rainforests
C. we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained land
D. the level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns
D
Once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job .Everyday when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Lea ve that job,” her husband told her.
“Oh,I will,” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job,” her grandchildren told her. “Oh,I will,”she said. “But not yet. There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can’t just yet.”
I know this woman. And her story reminds me of an old dog half asleep on a porch (走廊) of a store, moanin g and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way?” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh,” answered the man,“He’s lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesn’t he move?”“Because it’s not hurting him bad enough.”
That’s true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But we’re wrong. Prolonged work pain is continuing. Some work pain damages our selfesteem(自尊),kills our passion or destroys our dreams.
Wilbur Wright once commented,“We could hardly wait to get up in the morning.
I know that exhilarating(令人愉快的) feeling of being so passionate(热情的) about something I was working on that I couldn’t wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at working know that kind of passion, too.”
They get excited about work. They offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly. And when things don’t change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let environment hijack(抢劫;掠夺)their selfesteem, passion or dreams.
66.The woman complained to her husband every day because ________.
A.she didn’t have enough money to support her family
B.her boss criticized her for what she had done
C.she was not satisfied with her job at all
D.her work was difficult and her boss was cruel
67.From the second paragraph we can know that the woman ________.
A.liked making friends with others B.loved all of her children very much C.left her tiring job at last D.did exactly the same job all along
68.The author mentioned the old dog in order to tell us that ________.
A.it was deeply hurt by its owner B.the woman is like the dog on the nail
C.it is tied firmly to a nail by its owner D.it should be injured badly enough 69.The underlined word “Prolonged” (in Paragraph 4) means ________.
A.lasting B.slight C.serious D.hard 70.People who are getting along well with their work ________.
A.have to get up early every day B.are not willing to go to work C.need more unique gifts and talents D.are likely to change with the situation
Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue(美德), but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly good to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
___71____ Try the following steps :
Calm yourself. ___72___. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. ___73___. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt, give power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
___74___ If you understand your offender (冒犯者), you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. ___75___ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.
A. Why should you forgive?
B. How should you start to forgive?
C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
D. Try to see things from you offen der’s angle (角度).
E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.
G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.
