第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Closeness and independence are both important in our life. Though all humans need both of them, women tend to focus on the first and men on the second. It is as if their lifeblood ran in different directions.
These differences can give women and men differing views of the same situation, as they did in the ca se of couple I will call Tracy and Brian. When Brian’s old high school friend called him at work and announced he’d be in town on business the following month, Brian invited him to stay for the weekend. That evening he informed Tracy that they were going to have a houseguest, and that he and his friend would go out together the first night to chat like old times. Tracy was upset. She was going to be away on business the week before, and the Friday night when Brian would be out with his friend would be her first night home. But what upset her the most was that Brian had made these plans on his own and informed her of them, rather than discussing them with her before extending the invitation.
Tracy would never make plans, for a weekend or an evening, without first checking with Brian. She can’t understand why he doesn’t show her the same courtesy and consideration that she shows him. But when she protests, Brian says, “I can’t say to my friend, ‘I have to ask my wife for permission’!”
To Brian, checking with his wife means seeking permission, which implies that he is not independent, not free to act on his own. To Tracy, checking with her husband makes her feel good to know and show that she is involved with someone, that her life is bound up with someone else’s.
Tracy and Brian both felt upset by this incident because it cut to the core of their primary concerns. Tracy was hurt because she sensed a failure of closeness in their relationship: He didn’t care about her as much as she cared about him. And he was hur t because he felt she was trying to control him and limit his freedom.
1、What is the primary purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A.To educate the reader on how to maintain good family relationships.
B.To tell the reader how to make close connections with other people.
C.To suggest the best way of coping with family conflicts.
D.To explain the difference in communication styles between men and women.
2、Tracy was upset because ________.
A.she didn’t know Brian’s friend
B.she was too busy to meet Br ian’s friend
C.Brian didn’t care about her and hurt her deeply
D.Brian didn’t consult her before inviting his friends home
3、What would Tracy most probably do if she plans to buy something expensive? A.She would discuss with Brian.
B.She would simply decide on her own.
C.She would ask her friends for advice.
D.She would buy Brian something expensive first.
4、According to the passage, compared with men, women tend to ________.
A.be more emotional
B.be easier to get hurt
C.emphasize more on sharing
D.emphasize more on independence
22.(8分)The biggest challenge faced by travelers, especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anymore wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag which was worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention--dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the colors are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liter s of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not
in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
1、What led Ash Newland to create the Scrunba Wash Pack?
A.His job requirements. B.A traditional washboard.
C.His interest in invention. D.His personal experience.
2、Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?
A.Clothes couldn’t be washed well.
B.The invention was not so convenient.
C.The bag couldn’t contain enough water.
D.The cost of the invention was very high.
3、It can be inferred that the improved Scrubba Wash Pack ________.
A.turns to be much environmentally friendlier.
B.will replace the traditional washing machines.
C.will be widely used by more travelers in the future.
D.can encourage more people to travel a long distance.
4、What is the best title of this passage?
A.A thing of the past: Travelers’ worry of washing clothes.
B.The Scrubba Wash Pack--A bag free of washing.
C.The development of a great invention.
D.How to design a new pack for travelers.
23.(8分)Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard’s announcements. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few p eople listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was
different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best I can recall, the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’s right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”
Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guard’s excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said “Were you the guard on the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith?” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.” “Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.
There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?
1、Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements?
A.The messages are unattractive.
B.The guard’s voice is not clear.
C.They usually feel sleepy.
D.They are absorbed in books.
2、What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Patient. B.Cautious.
C.Surprised. D.Excited.
3、What might the guard talk about with his family when he got home?
A.The beautiful weather.
B.The recorded message.
C.The train from Penrith.
D.The unexpected appreciation.
4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.An Intelligent Guard. B.A Boring Train Story.
C.A Different Train Announcement. D.A Lovely Morning in Sydney.
24.(8分)An international team of researchers from the University of Oxford have found that the way people use the Internet is closely tied to the seasonal movements in the natural world. Their online species searches follow the patterns of seasonal animal migrations (迁徙).
Migratory birds (候鸟) flood back to where they reproduce every spring. That migratory behavior is accompanied by some human behavior. “In English-language Wikipedia (维基百科), the online searches for migratory species tend to increase in spring when those birds arrive in the United States,” said the lead author John Mittermeier.
And not just birds. Mittermeier and his team surveyed nearly 2.5 billion Wikipedia search records, for 32,000 species, across 245 languages. They also saw variable search rates for insects, horsetails and flowering plants. Seasonal trends seemed to be widespread in Wikipedia behavior for many species of plants and animals.
This finding suggests new ways to monitor changes in the world’s biological diversity. It also shows new ways to see how much people care about nature, and which species and areas might be the most effective targets for conservation.
Mittermeier is encouraged by the search results. He commented, “I think there’s a concern among conservationists (生态环境保护者) that people are losing touch with the natural world and that they’re not interacting with native species anymore. And so in that sense, it was really exciting and quite unexpected for me to see people’s Wikipedia interest closely related to changes in nature.”
Richard Grenyer, Associate Professor from the University of Oxford, says search data is useful to conservation biologists, “By using these big data approaches, we can direct our attention towards the difficult questions in modern conservation: which species and areas are changing, and where are the people who care the most and can do the most to help.”
1、What have researchers found about species searches?
A.They strengthen ties among people.
B.They affect the animal movements.
C.They differ in language backgrounds.
D.They reflect animal migration seasons.
2、What is the purpose of writing Paragraph 3?
A.To summarize the research process.
B.To further support the research findings.
C.To show the variety of species searches.
D.To present researchers’ heavy work load.
3、How does Mittermeier feel about the search results?
A.Satisfied with Wikipedia’s service.
B.Worried about Wikipedia behavior.
C.Amazed at people’s care about nature.
D.Sad about people’s not getting close to nature.
4、Why does Richard think such search data is useful?
A.It helps to aim at conservation targets.
B.It increases interest in big data approaches.
C.It keeps track of trends in biologists’work.
D.It pushes people to solve difficult problems.
25.(10分)One of the biggest problems when we are talking is the awkward silence. Encountering this situation is so uncomfortable that you would avoid meeting new people in the first place. In the past, I struggled with this and I even thought it had to do with my DNA or something… But later I learned that once you know ho w to keep those words flowing, you can meet and talk to anyone you like, which helps create great possibilities for friendship, fun and shared activities that you would otherwise have missed out on.
After studying this in depth, I had different opinions and found that one of these common behaviors is the habit of filtering (过滤)--holding back from saying something until you’ve “checked” to make sure that what you’re about to say is cool, impressive and interesting. Another problem is not learning to get in the mood for conversation. If you don’t know how to change from subjects, then it can take a lot of time to warm up.
It is the reflex (习惯性思维) that allows you to say whatever goes on in your mind.
It’s fun to realize that you’re allowed to say whatever is on your mind. As long as you don’t say anything that could land you in jail (监狱).
All of the “Oh! That’s interesting…” “Hmm, I’ve never heard of that” “Hmm,
cool!” expressions are reactionary (保守的) bits of conversation that prove to the other person that you’re really listening. This works 99% of the time. So, if you show some interest, they’ll hang around and want to talk to you even more.
Everyone knows that stories juice-up conversations, but most people only talk about stories of their own lives. When someone mentions something related to any of them, just tell the story, even if it’s not from your life. The more interesting, stranger or more frightening they are, the harder they are to forget.
1、If people can deal with the awkward silence, they can .
A.train their working skill B.improve their life quality
C.enrich their social life D.establish their working relationship
2、When talking with others, we should .
A.feel nervous B.think twice
C.be free to express D.avoid breaking in
3、According to the passage, what do the speakers care much about?
A.The attractive topics of conversation.
B.The atmosphere of the conversation.
C.The listener’s experiences and tastes.
D.The listener’s curiosity and concern.
4、What does the underlined part “ju ice-up conversations” mean?
A.making conversations more boring B.making conversations livelier C.making conversations smoother D.making conversations more relaxing

I have learned from your e¬mail that you want to try smoking as you think it is very attractive. As far as I can see, smoking is a bad habit.
It is widely believed that smoking has harmful effects on one's body. For example,it can do terrible damage to your heart and lungs, and even cause cancer.Additionally, cigarette smoking will affect the health of your family members and other
non¬smokers. What's worse, you will find it hard to give up once you are addicted to
cigarette smoking due to one of the chemicals called nicotine. Therefore,on no account should you form such a bad habit.
