A(本题8分)You might think that “global warming”means nothing more than a rise in the world’s temperature. But, rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation (撤离) of an island nation — the citizens of Tuvalu will have to leave their homeland.During the 20th century, sea level has risen 8~12 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt w ater which has polluted the country’s drinking water.Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the KyotoProtocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their green house gas emissions (排放), which are a main cause of global warming.“By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,”Laupepa told the BBC.Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable (易受影响的) to rising sea levels. In the Kaiser Poll, 38% say it's the top concern, down from 44% in a 1996 poll; in the Gallup Poll, 29% say AIDS is No.1, down from 41% in 1992 and 67% in 1987.Other findings from Kaiser, which polled more than 1,200 adults in September and October and asked additional questions of another 1,000 adults in November:52% say the country is making progress against AIDS, up from 32% in 1995.51% say the government spends too little on AIDS. 86% correctly say AIDS drugs can now lengthen lives; an equal number correctly say that the drugs are not cures.67% incorrectly say that AIDS deathsincreased or stayed the same in the past year; 24% know deaths fell. Daniel Zingale, director of AIDS Action Council, says, "I'm encouraged that the American people are getting th e message that the AIDS epidemic isn't over. He hasn’t stolen a single book. So what’s the crime? We think that Mr. Brush has a story to tell. We plan to publish his story.”When asked why he didn’t return the books, Mr. Brush said, “Well, how could I? They became friends to me. I was afraid to return them, because I knew that kids or dogs would get hold of these books and chew them up, throw them around, rip the pages, spill soda on them, get jam and jelly on them, and drown them in the toilet.”He continued, “Books are people, too! They talk to you, they take care of you, and they enrich you with wisdom and humor and love. A book is my guest in my home. How could I kick it out? I repaired torn pages. I dusted them. I turned their pages so they could breathe and get some fresh air.“Every week I reorganized them on their shelves so they could meet new friends. My books were HAPPY books. You could tell just by looking at them. Now they’re all back in the library, on the lower shelves, on the floors, at the mercy of all those runny-nosed kids. I can hear them calling me! In a study of by-standers, it was found that some people keep on walking."There is a tendency to decide that no action is needed," says a psychologist, "In order to take action, you have to work against them." Here are some common thoughts that stop you from helping.●Why should I be the one? I'm probably not the most able person in this crowd. You might think someone older or with more medical knowledge should offer assistance.●What if he doesn't really need my help? The fear of embarrassment is powerful; no one wants to risk looking foolish in front of others.●No one else looks concerned. We can follow the people around us, but most people tend to hold back their emotions in public."If you spot trouble and find yourself explaining inaction, force yourself to stop and evaluate the situation instead of walking on," says the psychologist. "Then retry to involve other people; you don't have to take on the entire responsibility of being helpful. Sometimes it's just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, 'It looks like we should do something.' Or asking someone if an ambulance has been called and, if not, to call for one. Once you take action, most people will follow you."17.According to a study of by-standers, what will some people do when a man ahead falls down on the sidewalk?A. They will call 110.B. I’m afraid I can’t come any earli er because I have three classes this afternoon.M: Uh, I won’t be here when you come. For example, a Colombian who wants someone to approach him often signals with a hand movement in which all the fingers of one hand, cupped, point downward as they move rapidly back and forth. Speakers of English have a similar gesture though the hand may not be cupped and the fingers may be held more loosely, but for them the gesture means goodbye or go away, quite the opposite of the Colombian gesture. Again, in Colombia, a speaker of English would have to know that when he indicates height he must choose between different gestures depending on whether he is referring to a human being or an animal. If he keeps the palm of the hand parallel to the floor, as he would in his own culture when making known the height of a child, for example, he will very likely be greeted by laughter; in Colombia this gesture is reserved for the description of animals. In order to describe human beings he should keep the palm of his hand at a right angle to the floor. Substitutions of one gesture for the other often create not only humorous but also embarrassing moments. In both of the examples above, speakers from two different cultures have the same gesture, physically, but its meaning differs sharply.。

These public businesses are usually open from7:00a.m.to10:00p.m.A smaller laundromat might have a dozen washers and a dozen dryers, while a larger one might have twice that number. Most places do not have any employees there,as there are simple instructions posted near the machines and everything can be done without assistance. Most people bring their own washing soap, but there is often a machine that sells small packages in case you run out or forget yours.During the weekend,it can be hard to find an open machine but it is much easier during the week. Many laundry places have TVs,video games, magazines,or free Wi-Fi.Recently,many laundry places have added cafés or bars.Because people usually spend a few hours doing their laundry, having a drink or a meal is a convenient and fun way to pass the time.Of course, when so many people are washing their clothes close to each other,it is easy to make mistakes. My sister actually met her husband at a laundromat after he put her clothes in his basket by accident!。

AHummingbirds (蜂鸟) are very small birds. This small bird is quite an acrobat (杂技演员). Only a few birds, such as kingfishers and sunbirds, can hover, which means to stay in one place in the air. But no other bird can match the flying skills of the hummingbird. The hummingbird can hover, fly backward and fly upside down!Hummingbirds got their name because their wings move very quickly when they fly. This causes a humming sound. Their wings move so fast that you can‟t see them at all. This takes a lot of energy. These little birds must have food about every 20 minutes to have enough strength to fly. Their favorite food is nectar (花蜜). Nectar is the sweet water deep inside a flower. Hummingbirds use their long, thin bills to drink from flowers. When a hummingbird drinks nectar, it hovers in frontof a flower. It never touches the flower with its wings or feet.Of all the birds in the world, the hummingbird‟s colors are among the brightest. Some are bright green with red and white markings. Some are purple. One kind of hummingbird can change its color from reddish-brown to purple to red!The hummingbird‟s ne st is special, too. It looks like a small cup. The inside of the nest is very soft. This is because one of the things the mother bird uses to build the nest is the silk from a spider‟s web (蜘蛛网).1. What is special about hummingbirds?A. They are the only birds that can hover.B. They have excellent flying skills.C. They can walk on water.D. They can fly very high.2. Hummingbirds got their name from _____.A. their foodB. their small bodiesC. the sound they makeD. the color of their wings3. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?A. Hummingbirds‟ markings are dark.B. A kind of hummingbird has one color.C. The hummingbird is one of the prettiest birds.D. Some hummingbirds change their colors for protection.4. According to the text, a hummingbird‟s nest is _____.A. difficult to findB. hard and strongC. made by the father birdD. built partly from spider silkBWe just love giving cards in Britain. If there‟s a special occasion coming up, there‟s no doubt that we‟ll be there, card in hand, to celebrate it.And this isn‟t just for birthdays; we also give cards when people are ill or when they have got a new job. And even if you forgot som ebody‟s birthday, there are even “sorry it‟s late” cards. So you can pretty much find a card for any occasion. Before coming to Italy I had never even considered that our love for card giving might not be shared by other countries. In fact, my workmates told me that hardly anyone sends Christmas cards in Italy and that they actually don‟t really give birthday cards either! Unbelievable! Inthe UK, if a close friend or family member didn‟t get me a card I‟d feel upset! However, the only place you can buy cards in Italy is in a shop which sells school things. In comparison, we have whole shops that sell them in the UK and we even have different types of card shops.Although cards can take up your time, from choosing the perfect one, to thinking up the personal message inside, I think it‟s a really nice gesture. And especially with Christmas cards, it adds to that festive feeling. When I sit down to write countless cards to friends and family, I get that little bit happier that it will be Christmas soon! Especially when I see my own Christmas cards, proudly sitting on my desk wishing me a very merry Christmas.Of course, the problem comes when they‟re no longer needed, when Christmas is over. It makes me sad just to throw them all away, so I try and hang on to my favorite ones.5.
