I would like to meet Mr Jonathan as he appears in the news for his bestseller. He is a writer and his recent book “The Amazing Riders” has become the bestseller. So, the local news agencies have made reports on him and his reputation is soaring up. Interestingly, Mr Jonathan lives in my locality but I was unaware of his intellectual skills. His bestselling book is the talk of the town and the news agencies, newspapers and magazines are after him to make stories about his book and contribution to the contemporary literature.I would like to meet Mr Jonathan for some solid reasons. The topmost issue about meeting him is to know about his writing. He writes smoothly and when the readers read the stories, it appears that the events are before them. In fact, I, as a reader of his book, has become his great fan. His narrative style is alsodifferent than the other writers. He uses a different tone to describe the events through his writings. Besides, his plots are also interesting and will make you amazed. Before publishing the book, he was not that much familiar in the locality and people knew him as a simple man. But now he has become a celebrity by dint of the news.I have so many questions for him to ask. If I get the chance to meet him, I will ask him first about his story plots and outlines. Some of his plots are highly interesting and they attract the attention of the readers. Further, I will try to get information about his narrative style. I think he will also share with me that how much time he spends to make a story and where he gets his inspiration to write. These are the initial queries from my side for him.雅思口语必备高频Part2话题参考答案--Describe a famous personTopic:Describe a famous person you know. You should say:Who the person isHow you know this personAnd explain why you want to meet him/her.

P2Describe a popular person. You should say:Who this person isWhat kind of person he or she isWhy this person is popularAnd explain how this person influences the publicP31.What are the qualities of being popular?2.Do you know any pop star who really likes helping others?3.Do you think children should imitate their idols?4.What influences do pop stars have on teenagers?5.Do you think pop stars have more freedom or less freedom?
Speaking of a popular person I know, the first name that comes to my mind is David Beckham. So today, I will be talking about him, a well-known celebrity not only in his country UK, but also around the whole world.David Beckham was born in Leytonstone, London in the year1975. He is most widely known as one of UK’s greatest footballers. He played football for the England National team from 1996 to 2009, and also worked for some other famous football clubs like the Manchester United and Real Madrid. As a professional player, he became an icon of football around the world at a young age and is now probably one of the most esteemed sports celebrities alive. He is a legendary footballer who has a unique style in his bending free-kicks as a right winger. In 2004, David Beckham was listed in the FIFA's 100 greatest living players in the world. He was twice the runner-up for 'FIFA World Player of the Year’. These statistics are to signify how popular he is. By the way, he became one of the highest paid footballers in the world back in 2013, from which you can tell how much people love him. When it comes to the reasons why Beckham is so popular, first thing I have to say, is that he truly is an extraordinary football player. I’ve always been a fan of the UK football team, and Beckham was the footballer I most wanted to learn from back in high school. Besides, he’s also a fashion icon among the young, always displaying great tastes of clothing. Another important factor that makes him so popular I guess, is his efforts put in charity. He has been a UNICEF ambassador for a long period of time, founder of The David Beckham UNICEF Fund, and his recent philanthropic works also turned out to be quite exceptional. As a successful football player, Beckham, along with his teammates, has made a hit among football fans around the world, attracting more people to explore this exciting sport. In the meantime, his endeavors into improving the quality of children’s life in undeveloped countries, also helped a lot in drawing people’s at tention to this severe problem. Tips for answering this cue card topic about a person you respect or admire:You can talk about one of your relatives who is is a senior citizen like your grandfather, grandmother. She has an attractive face and looks younger than her age. She has round face, big eyes, and beautiful eyelashes. She likes wearing casual clothes unless she’s at work when she normally wears lady’s formal wear.My mother works as an accountant in a trade company. She studied accounting at Fudan University and she has always been working as an account since graduation. She’s warm-hearted, open-minded, and always willing to help other people who are in need of help. Although she’s not a young lady anymore, she’s very willing and ready to accept new things. She likes singing, dancing, watching movies, reading, planting flowers at home. She is also a big sports fan, I mean, she likes playing badminton, jogging, cycling. I guess that’s the reason why she is still in very good shape at 55 years old.I think what makes me love my mother the most is that she is so dedicated to the family, that is, she loves my father and me so much. No matter how tired she is after working for a long day, or how many frustrations she has faced herself at work, when she comes back home from her office, she becomes very happy straightaway when seeing my father and me. I guess she has given me so many suppo rts in so many ways…for example, telling me not to give up when I failed to get into university, encouraging me to be a strong person when I didn’t do well in my job interviews, etc. With her blessing, I learnt my way to grow up and finally reach where I am today.I think she’s the most important person in my life. I am very proud of my mother and I love her. I feel so lucky to such a great mother.I wish I could say there was one person that I admire the most, but truth us there are more than one. One person that comes to mind the most beleive it or not is Angelina Jolie. A celebirty is a funny one to admire... But what i admire of her is the dedication that she has to the causes that are true to her. Now that can mean anything and some people might say that she is just another celebirty in search of recognition. But what I see is someone that has used her celebrity for the betterment of others in ways that are more than superficial. Unlike Madonna and others she has worked hard and has spent days at a time if not weeks in places like a fganistan and Leone for her cause. She has given without condition and as a result of it has given a home to children that otherwise would not have another chance. So I admire her as a true humanitarian. If fame follows her it is truely because we cannot get enough of her and not because she invites it.But the one person that I admire the most my grandmother. She was a great woman and one that held on in times of turmoil, she taught me to be strong and if I have to cry go ahead. But to keep focused and when I was done feeling sorry for myself get to work on fixing the problem and not dwelling on it. She taught me that no one said life was fair so quit acting like some one said it was and then took it away. Be a woman, and being a woman is expecting respect as well as demanding it.Funny thing, she always said a man's world is always easier than a womans. So if all you have to do is get through a mans world you are home free!!I love the works of Eva Hesse and Cindy Sherman, for different reasons, obviously. Eva Hesse's visceral fiber and sculptural installations fascinate me. And Cindy Sherman's cultural and psychological explorations into identity titillate me and engage my higher brain functioning at the same time. I love the paradox.I saw Wolfgang Laib's exhibit at the Smithsonian several years ago, and the serene beauty of his pollen, beeswax, and milk sculptures, and the science behind them, opened me up to a new kind of understanding of conceptual art -- that it can be beautiful and still have meaning, and reflect and be based in nature, all at the same time. It was extremely significant to me, to see that art can be all of these things. When I was younger, I was introduced to the work of San Diego artist Christopher Reilly. I still have his early work on my walls, and I am still in love with it and being inspired by it. Also, Santjes Oomen was an artist whose work -- while I never acquired any -- lingers in my mind, and I recognize how it has influenced me.And, finally, I have to say the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman has inspired me tremendously. He is more than an actor; he is an artist, and if you pay attention to the subtleties of his work, his delving into the psychology of the characters he plays -- it's really amazing. There is something about his work that moved me to get up off of the couch and start making stuff again. The park I want to describe is Yan’an Park. It’s very close to my home, just behind the Sheraton Hotel. One can either enter the park throug h the main gate on Yan’an Road, or from the east gate on Yili Road. The park is really beautiful. It’s got quite a few different areas and it is very peaceful. There are pathways all around the park and a lot of grass and trees. There are two ponds in the park – a small one where you can go fishing in the summer time, and a very large pond where you can go skating in the winter time. Near the large pond is a picnic area where you can sit down and relax. It’s nice and shady because there are many tall trees nearby. There’s also a play area for small children with games and rides, a restaurant and a snack bar, and an indoor swimming pool.I first found the park a few years ago after a friend told me about it. I went to see it myself, but it took me a long time to find it because the entrances were quite small. When I entered it, I was amazed at how large and pretty it was. To me, it seemed like a hidden oasis in the busy city.My first visit to Yan’an Park made me want to return again and again. I love going to this park because it makes me feel relaxed and happy. It’s such a nice feeling just to walk along the shady paths under big oak trees or just sit down by the bond watching the fished swimming. Also I like to watch the children playing in the children’s ar eas, because they are so cute and often remind me of my younger days. It’s a nice break from the busy city life, a get-away experience from the fast pace of life. What do you consider as good "Internet skills"? In my opinion every child should be trained to type since most of the communication online is done in writing. The Internet is an excellent resource to find an answer to almost any question. But in order to express your question properly you need to be able to type fast and correctly.Another basic skill is using a search engine. As of now Google is by far the best choice so being able to "google" is a vital skill nowadays. Proper googling requires a number of things. Depending on the nature of your question you might need to brainstorm appropriate keywords in order to find the answer. That's why you should use the Google toolbar which sometime makes suggestions as to the keywords you can enter. It also keeps track of the keywords you entered previously so you don't have to put them when you are repeating your query. If you want to know how popular a certain phrase is you have to put that very phrase into quotation marks. So, what skills do you think are important when it comes to using the Internet?Well, you just mentioned the most vital - fast typing. Being able to get somewhere as fast as possible is crucial, and typing speed is essential. The reason I second your opinion about speed is because I can confirm it - I won such a contest two or three years ago, and, I must say, it does give me quite an edge over most people. Certainly, there are other factors which also very important - such as, as you named it, brainstorming, also knowing the language flawlessly can bring better results. The ability to work with basic programs could significantly ease one's navigation, too. Knowing the Internet slang, which is not a small a part of this type of communication, could be very useful as well.My most important Internet skill was learned before personal computers were invented. When I was a kid, my parents thought typing was a necessary survival skill in modern society, so they made me take typing class in high school, where we learned to use typewriters. My friends who thought "secretaries do the typing everywhere" never learned to type, and their efficiency on the computer is hampered because of that. One important Internet skill is to have a real understanding that computers don't know anything and can't think. Understanding this makes it easier for a person to figure out how the computer is retrieving information, so you can use not only search engines, but other tools better. You'd be amazed at how many people think computers know things and can think.。

Describe a famous person that you admireThe famous person I'd like to describe is Fu Mingxia. She was a gold medallist at Sydney Olympic games. In fact, she won four of them. She won them in the diving competition. She's now a student at Tsinghua University. So she's quite clever and she will graduate from a top university. She's about 25 years old. I think she must be blessed by god to be able to dive so perfectly. After all, most divers have trained in diving schools that are very sophisticated, but her training was not so privileged. She just worked hard and had a very committed coach.I think I admire her so much because I can imagine how nervous she felt having the whole world watching her and yet she controlled that nervousness masterfully to make a perfect dive. Well, its that ability to control yourself that I'd really love to learn. Also, her diving style was unique and very-brave, and because of her innovative style, she has brought pride to her country.I think that people can learn that by being the best at something you are not only helping yourselfbut the whole country, because high quality is what improves our lives. I think people can learn that nothing is impossible if we set our minds to being the best. We shouldn't always think we can just do what we must to get by. Our goals should be much more ambitious. We should try to be the best because we cantake pride from the value of hard work in everything we do. Describe a person you admire. You should say:who the person iswhat he or she is likeand why you admire him or her.
Describe a person
Description of a personWarm-upSonnet 18Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature's changing cour se, untrimm’d; But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st. Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Rough (风或者天气)暴风雨般的,狂暴的,剧烈的.darling 形容词,受喜爱的,亲爱的.4. lease (合同所规定的)期限.date 持续的一段时间,季节.5. sometime 有时候,时而.hot 副词.the eye of heaven 指太阳.6. his its,指太阳的.complexion 面部,脸.dim 动词,使变得暗淡.7. And every fair sometime declines from fair.fair第1个fair的意思是“美丽的人或者美丽的东西”;第2个fair的意思是“美丽”. sometime 在特定的时候,在某个时候.decline 衰落,衰退.8. 该行的正常语序是untrimmed by chance or nature's changing course,以untrimmed为中心词的过去分词短语,修饰第7行中的第2个fair.nature's changing couse 自然的变化规律.untrim 夺去美丽.9. fade 衰退,衰败.10. lose possession of 失去对. I. What should be described?Principles: Descriptions of people may focus on the various aspects of the people described —their physical appearance, style of clothing, their character and personality, their interests and behavior. What you select to describe depends on your topic and purpose.1.Characteristic featuresIt will be impossible (and unnecessary) for your child to include all the descriptive elements listed below. After all, the composition is limited to one little paragraph! But you can certainly expect that paragraph to sparkle with a few additional, well-chosen details. What really matters is this: Regardless of when or how you approach it, improved description will result. And after all, isn’t that the point?1)Physical appearanceBuildComplexionHair styles:Ponytail and pigtail(long, straight, blonde pigtail or ponytail)Wavy, curly, neatly combed (wavy and dyed) (curly and permed)Bobbed hair with a fringeFace ShapeSquareOvalRoundTriangularHeart-shapedSkin/Face/Complexion (Complexion is the natural appearance and color of the skin, especially of the face; e.g. Mary has a soft, creamy complexion.Freckled: sprinkled or covered with light brown spotsRosy: pink-cheeked; fair complexion that glows with a hint of pinkRuddy: skin that has a healthy reddish tint; may have the appearance of sunburnTanned: skin with a healthy golden-brown tintWrinkled: full of or covered with lines or loose folds of skin; often associated with age Other skin-related adjectives: pale, spotless, silky, smooth, creamy, baby-soft, glowing, paper-thin or translucent (as with a very old person); rough, callused, dryEyesGeneral: Brown-eyed mother, bright-eyed sister, wide-eyed childEye expressions: piercing, mesmerizing, sad, sorrowful, tear-filled, gentle, sympathetic, warm, compassionate, expressive, twinkling, lively, dancing, laughingEye Shape and Size: Large, small, almond-shaped, round, slanted, squinty, crinklyIf you say:"She has a big pair of round eyes!" Your listener may imagine this!In English, when we describe a person's eyes, we don't say the person has "a pair of eyes". That's understood! Nobody wonders how many eyes a person has! We assume each person has a pair!We just use adjectives (usually positive) to describe the eyes: She has big, beautifuleyes!...OR...He has dark, intense eyes...OR...Her eyes sparkle with enthusiasm.... Also, in English we seldom talk about the shape of a person's eyes. When we do, it may mean more than just shape. For example, in English, a person with "narrow eyes" may be thought of as sneaky or dishonest. A person with "round eyes" may be thought of as surprised. So it is best just to talk about how a person's eyes twinkle, how beautiful they are and so on. Otherwise, your listener may imagine a very funny person!Mouth/Lips:Thin lips, full lips, pouting lips, pursed lips (puckered up, like when someone is concentrating)Laugh, smile, beam, grin, frown, grimace, scowlHairTexture/Appearance: wavy, curly, straight, spiky, stiff, buzzed, shaved, parted, neatly-combed, tamed, long, short, croppedHair Styles: braids, ponytail, pigtails, bun, twist, bob, ringlets, flip, bangs, buzzlayered, feathered, chopped, gelled, spiked, slicked downLots of hair: thick, full, lustrous, bushy, coarse, wiry (stiff)Little hair: thin, scraggly, fine, baby-fine, wispy, limp, flat, balding, bald, bald spot, receding hairline (gradual loss of hair at the front of the head)Treated hair: permed, dyed, bleached, highlighted, weavedHair colors: black, brunette, brown, chestnut-brown, honey-blond, blond, golden-blond, ash-blond, auburn, red, strawberry-blond, gray, silver, white, salt-and-pepperFacial Hair: Beard, goatee, mustache, sideburnsFive o’clock shadow: new beard growth, shadowy in appearance, that can be seen late in the day on the jaw, chin, or cheek area (also known as stubble)Adjectives: bearded, unshaven, clean-shaven, trimmed, neatly-trimmedAgeWhen speaking of age, you must also be a bit careful. People don't like to be described as being the wrong age, and sometimes they don't like being described as being the age that they actually are! It is good to choose flattering terms when speaking of age. Here is a list to help you:AGES:Baby = Zero - 3 Toddler = 3 - 5Child = Zero - 12 Teen or Youth = 12 - 19 Young adult = 18 - 27 Adult = 27 - 45 Middle aged = 45 - 60 Mature = 60 - 70 or 75 Elderly = 70 +Some age groups overlap because both groups could apply to the same person. Babies and toddlers are also children. An 18-year-old is a teen and a young adult. A 70-year-old may be Mature or Elderly. Be careful when saying someone is "elderly". Elderly people are usually considered frail and in poor health. If a person is over 70 but still strong and healthy, it is better to say that person is mature.2)Style of clothingClothingFabric: denim, twill, wool, cotton, tweed, polyester, corduroy, fleece, spandex, leatherBottoms: jeans, cargo pants, flat-front pants, pleated pants, slacks, trousers, overalls, sweatpants, crop pants, capris, skirt, culottes, shorts, board shortsTops: sport shirt, dress shirt, polo shirt, button-down shirt, tank top, blouse, long-sleeve, short-sleeve, sleeveless, collared, T-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie, pullover, sweater, cardigan Other clothing: dress, uniform, costume, pajamas, bathrobe, robe, vest, jacket, blazer, coat, socks, stockings, gloves, hat, cap, shoes, boots, slippers, sandals, flip-flops, heels, pumps2.PersonalityPersonality: warm, friendly, kind, nice, pleasant, easy-going, generous, sensitive, sensible, strong, sociable, ambitious, determined, thrifty, frank, reliable, confident, emotional, broad-minded, inquiring, even-tempered, rude, cold, mean, arrogant, aggressive, extravagant, nosyAbility: intelligent, bright, clever, smart, gifted, talented, flexible, hard-working, average, simple, slow-witted, stupid, foolish, brainless, cunning, slyAttitude: optimistic, pessimistic, extroverted, introverted, enthusiastic, eager, motivated, down-to-earth, passive, argumentative, ill-mannered, courteous, trustworthy, sincere, jealous, envious, cruelWays to refelct one's personality:1)Physical appearance●Select prominent features to reflect the subject's personality and unique image.● e.g When describing a villain, people usually talk about the villain’s deep-set eyes, shifty eyes, and, sometimes sinister smiles.●The way people wear clothes and comb hair is seen as sign of their character.2)Describing the subject's speech and behavior3)Describing the subject's anecdotesExamples:A: When I first met Oma six years ago, she looked about eighty years old, was a few pounds over-weight for her medium frame, and slightly hunched over. She wore a flowered house dress, a closely washed white apron, and old, frayed leather shoes. Oma was deaf in one ear from a neglected childhood ear infection, and half of her face drooped from stroke. She shuffled her feet and held on to furniture with swollen, scarred hands as she walked.B: For a journalist, interviewing Mother Teresa about herself was a task. Not that she fended off such encounters; she just wouldn’t say much about herself. Instead, she’d speak of miracles, large and small, that materialized, thanks to God, when they were needed most.“It’s His work, not mine,”she told me at the home for the destitute and dying after winning the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. “God is our banker, He always provides.”She recalled a day at the home when “we found we had nothing, not a single piece of bread to give our people.”“You know what happened? For some mysterious reason, all the schools suddenly closed that day and their bread was sent to us,”she said. “Now who else but God could have done that?”C: She was a middle-aged woman, short and slightly heavy, with jet-black hair and solemn blue eyes that were bloodshot and glassy. She always looked distant, as if her mind were inanother place and time, and her face lonely and sad.People wondering why she was in her present state soon learned that her quandary started a year ago when her house caught fire and her old man and kids got killed. She came to my coffee shop twice a week. She would sit at the counter with melancholy on her face and drink her coffee and smoke cigars.3.Peculiarities and idiosyncrasiesPeculiarities should be included, for they are usually impress the reader deeply and give life to the person he described.II. How to describe a person?1.Dominant impressionIt means an overall attitude, mood or feeling about sb/sth you describe. It will become the thesis of the paper and guide your selection of details.Topic sentence:show the writer's atttitude or impression of the person.Example:This is a nice looking African - American man.He has short, black hair, sparkling brown eyes and a broad, friendly smile. He is wearing a dark suit and tie. He appears to be fit and trim. He looks like an intelligent, competent man.Beautiful SmileWhen Mr. Goodenough smiles, his face will display arange of expressions, from stolid grin to foolish mirth, his mouth opening wide and wide till it rea ches his ears, and till the ears are lost in the capacious mouth. Perhaps, Mr. Goodenough is unable to smile, or, perhaps, able to, he is unable to express himself by smiling. Such is Mr. Goodenough smile, and such is Mr. Goodenough himself, as ugly, frigid and ingratiating as his smile, rigid inwa rds and outwards.2.Detail selection● Describe clearly. To make a description of a person clear to the reader, the writer must include a sufficient number of details that are specific. (See Sample A)● Select only appropriate details. You don’t have to describe every single detail about the person. You should select only those details that present a dominant impression. A common plan for arranging details prese nts the subject’s most outstanding characteristics first and then fills in the lesser information. (See Sample B)● Make your descriptions vivid. (See sample C)Task 1 Read to learn about writingSample ARemember that you can’t write good descriptions w ithout being specific. The following is a typical example of the descriptive essay, in which the writer Loe Dobbs uses specific details to create a portrait of his father who has affected his life greatly.“Terrific Work”I grew up in Childress, Texas, a town of nearly 8,000, where Dad had a farm-machinery business.I hauled hay, picked potatoes and did other chores, but my father always insisted that schoolwork come first. He may not have had much formal education — Dad left school in the eighth grade — but he possessed a world of knowledge. He was a voracious reader who was smarter about current affairs than anyone I knew. At the dinner table he pushed me to think and to defend my opinions. These discussions sparked in me an intense curiosity about the world and taught me the importance of attaining the best education I could. It also helped that Dad believed praise was a more powerful motivator than criticism. When I brought home a good report card, he would say, “Terrific work!” and that was enough t o inspire me to bring home an even better one next time. This approach proved successful, and when it came time for me to go to college, I was lucky enough to be accepted by Harvard.Honesty was supremely important to Dad. He stressed that an honest life is an honorable life. I always remember him telling me, “Say what you mean and mean what you say.”My father has been gone thirty years now, but he still lives on in me and my children. I tried to raise them as he raised me, and I have wished countless times that he could see us now. (Adapted from Reader’s Digest)Sample BRead the essay below and notice how the writer uses appropriate details to present an unforgettable professor to the readers. My Favorite ProfessorIn my more ambitious academic days, I was majoring in both mathematics and journalism. I was not a typical math major; my classes did not come easily to me despite my professors’ most brave efforts. While my peers tended to tackle their homework without too much sweat, I struggled to keep pace. Dr. Rudy Horne taught my differential equations course, which dealt with material I considered quite challenging.I still remember the first day of class. Dr. Horne had the rare ability to make difficult maths seem simple. Of course, I still failed to keep up, so I attended his open office hours every week to catch up on material that I could not digest in class. Dr. Horne’s office hours were his strongest point. At first, I was concerned that he would not be pleased with how much extra help I was seeking. I was worried for no reason. Not only would he go through any homework problem with which I struggled, but he made sure I knew that he wanted me to be there. After the work on differentialequations (微分方程) was finished, we would sit and chat about Carolina sports, the dynamics of the classroom and even his friend’s upcoming wedding. Needless to say, Dr. Horne became a friend in that mathematical part of my life where I needed the most support.I had a difficult time telling certain people about my decision to focus solely on journalism. Months after my decision, I still had not told Dr. Horne. I did not want to disappoint him since he had spent so much of his time helping me. I eventually ran into him at a movie theater on Franklin Street. We went out for coffee after the film to catch up with each other. When I told him about my decision and the reasons behind it, he could not have been more supportive. I realized then that even though he was an experienced mathematician who had been dragged into my mathematical struggles, he really wanted what was best for me. That, to me, is the definition of a friend. Expessions:catch up with/on: acquire information about sth. belatedly 事后了解对某事的情况drag into: make sb. take part in an activity against his will 硬拉某人参加…Sample CTo create a good descriptive essay about a person, you should try to make your description lively. The following is an essay written by Katharine Brush, first published on March 16, 1946, in The New Yorker. As you read it, note how the writer vividly presents the portraits of the couple who fail to communicate well with each other. Discuss the questions after the essay.Birthday PartyThey were a couple in their late thirties, and they looked unmistakably married. They sat on the banquette opposite us in a little narrow restaurant, having dinner. The man had a round, self-satisfied face, with glasses on it; the woman was fadingly pretty, in a big hat. There was nothing conspicuous (惹人注目的) about them, nothing particularly noticeable, until the end of their meal, when it suddenly became obvious that this was an Occasion —in fact, the husband’s birthday, and the wife had planned a little surprise for him.It arrived, in the form of a small but glossy birthday cake, with one pink candle burning in the center. The headwaiter brought it in and placed it before the husband, and meanwhile the violin-and-piano orchestra played “Happy Birthday to You” and the wife beamed with shy pride over her little surprise, and such few people as there were in the restaurant tried to help out with a pattering of applause. It became clear at once that help was needed, because the husband was not pleased. Instead he was hotly embarrassed, and indignant at his wife for embarrassing him.You looked at him and you saw this and you thought, “Oh, now, don’t be like that!” But he was like that, and as soon as the little cake had been deposited on the table, and the orchestra had finished the birthday piece, and the general attention had shifted from the man and the woman, I saw him say something to her under his breath —some punishing thing, quick and curt and unkind. I couldn’t bear to look at the woman then, so I stared at my plate and waited for quite a long time. Not long enough, though. She was still crying when I finally glanced over there again. Crying quietly and heart-brokenly and hopelessly, all to herself, under the gay big brim of her best hat.Questions on content and structure:1) How does the writer create a striking image of the birthday cake delivered to their table? Using sensory description to create a vivid image of the wife’s birthday gift for her husband.2) Why is the husband embarrassed? How does he show his embarrassment?Because he dislikes being made a public scene. He says something to his wife under his breath —some punishing thing, quick and curt and unkind.3) Why does the writer present the detail “I saw him say something to her under his breath —some punishing thing, quick and curt and unkind”?To show that the husband was hotly embarrassed, and indignant at his wife for embarrassing him.4) Why does the writer make the description: “She was still crying when I finally glanced over there again. Crying quietly and heart-brokenly and hopelessly, all to herself, under the gay big brim of her best hat”?To create a final image of the heartbroken wife whose well-meant “little surprise” was misunderstood by her husband and the writer expresses sympathy for her.5) What does the essay reveal about the husband? And about the wife?Description of the husband’s reaction and the wife’s sadness reveals the couple’s inability to communicate well in their marriage.3.Write your own essay!1.The descriptive essay is often creative, personal, or artistic.2.When choosing someone to write about, it should be a person to whom you have strong emotional ties (positive or negative).3.Close your eyes and visualize the person in detail. Your ultimate goal in this task is to evoke in the reader a sense of the person’s personality and character, not merely what he or she loo ks like.4.Adapt or narrow your topic to serve your purpose, and write a descriptive essay.。
Describe a person
Sample Excerpt: Presently three girls arrived, attended by three nurses and five or six maids. The first girl was of medium height and slightly plumpish, with cheeks as white and firm as a fresh lychee and a nose as white and shiny as soap made from the white goose-fat. She had a gentle, sweet, reserved manner. To look at her was to love her. The second girl was rather tall, with sloping shoulders and a slender waist. She had an oval face under whose well-formed brows large, expressive eyes shot out glances that sparkled with animation. To look at her was to forget all that was mean or vulgar. The third girl was undersized and her looks were still somewhat babyish and unformed. All three were dressed in identical skirts and dresses and wore identical sets of bracelets and hair ornaments.

Describe a famous comic actor in your country. You should say:who the person is;which film or program he or she acted in;what role he or she acted;and explain why you like him or her.
一旦成名了,明星就变成各大媒体追逐的对象了become the focus of the media, 然后动不动就会上个头条什么的(often) make the headlines。
因此his vivid/faultless/superb performance 就可以派上用场,或者his diligence helped him earn his fame,还有modest attitude & spirit of persistence等等。
对于喜剧演员,起码要做到make audience can't help laughing/make somebody laugh to tears/ roar with laughter。
