Toward a brighter future for allGood afternoon! As president of the university, i am proud to welcome you to this university. Your achievement is the triumph of years of hard work, both of your own and of your parents and teachers. Here at the university, we pledge to make your educational experience as rewarding as possible. In welcoming you to the university, i am reminded of my own high school graduation and the photograph my mom took of my dad and me. “Pose naturally,” Mom instructed us. “Wait!” said dad, “Let’s take a picture of me handing him an alarm clock.”The clock woke me up every morning in college. It is still on my office desk.Let me share with you something that you may not expect. You will miss your old routines and your parents’ reminders to work hard and attain your best. You may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with high school, and your parents may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with doing your laundry! But know this: The future is built on a strong foundation of the past. For you , these next four years will be a time unlike any other. Here you are surrounded by great resources: interesting students from all over the country, a learned and caring faculty, a comprehensive library, great sports facilities, and student organizations covering every possible interest -- from the arts to science, to community service and so on. You will have the freedom to explore and learn about new subjects. You will learn to get by on very little sleep, meet fascinating people, and pursue new passions. I want to encourage you to make the most of this unique experience, and to use your energy and enthusiasm to reap the benefits of this opportunity. You may feel overwhelmed by the wealth of courses available to you. You will not be able to experience them all, but sample them widely! College offers many things to do and to learn, and each of them offers a different way to see the world. If i could give you only one piece of advice about selecting courses, it would be this: Challenge yourself! Don’t assume that you know in advance what fields will interest you the most. Take some course in fields you’ve never tried before. You will not only emerge as a more broadly educated person, but you will also stand a better chance of discovering an unsuspected passion that will help to shape your future. A wonderful example of this is the fashion designer, Vera Wang, who originally studied art history. Over time, Wang paired her studies in art history with her love of fashion and turned it into a passion for design, which made her a famous designer around the world. Here at the university, it may not always be pleasant to have so many new experiences all at once. In your dorm, the student next door may repeatedly play the one song, which gives you a giant headache! You may be an early bird while your roommate is a night owl! And still, you and your roommate may become best friends. Don’t worry if you become a little uncomfortable with some of your new experiences. I promise you that the happy experiences will outweigh the unpleasant ones. And i promise that virtually all of them will provide you with valuable lessons which will enrich your life. So, with a glow in your eye and a song in your heart, step forward to meet these new experiences! We have confidence that your journey toward self-discovery and your progress toward finding your own passion will yield more than personal advancement. We believe that as you become members of our community of scholars, you will soon come to recognize that with the abundant opportunities for self-enrichment provided by the university, there also come responsibilities. A wise man said: “Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes form one generation to another.”You are the inheritors of hard work of your families and the hard work of many countless others who came before you. They built and transmitted the knowledge you will need to succeed. Now it is your turn. What knowledge will you acquire? What passions will you discover? What will you do to build a strong and prosperous future for the generations that will come after you?We take great pleasure in opening the door to this great step in your journey. We take delight in the many opportunities which you will find, and in the responsibilities that you will carry as citizens of your communities, your country, and the world. Welcome!参考译文课文A 奔向更加光明的未来下午好!作为校长,我非常自豪地欢迎你们来到这所大学。
新视野大学英语读写教程第三版电子教案Book 1 Unit 1
Unit 1Fresh StartUnderstanding and LearningOverviewThe first unit of the first book of our series meets students who have just entered college or university and are beginning a new phase in their lives. We hope that students will be able to talk about their expectations of their college experience, and they will be aware of the expectations their parents and their educators have of them.Text A is a university president’s welcome speech, in which the president gives valuable guidance to and expresses expectations of freshman students.Text B is a letter written by a father to his child who is about to start college, in which the father expresses his expectations of the child. We hope that the two texts will stimulate students to share their own expectations regarding their college experience; and we also hope the two texts will help students look from a new perspective at the expectations their educators and their parents have of themText A shows characteristics of a speech. Pronouns I, we and you are more frequently used than in other kinds of writing because the speaker is addressing the audience directly, hoping to motivate the audience and to gain their support and understanding. In a speech, the speaker can employ a variety of figures of speech to make his speech vivid and powerful, such as simile, metaphor, contrast, parallelism(排比), and repetition. A very common figure of speech is parallelism. In parallelism, coordinate ideas are arranged in words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs to emphasize and point out relations. In Text A, for example, the president uses many sentences of parallel structure. This makes his speech powerful, persuasive, and thought-provoking. It can even produce humorous effect as in the example: “You may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with high school, and your parents may have cried tears of joy to be finally with doing your laundry!”The most obvious feature of Text B is that it contains many imperative sentences, and these sentences tend to be brief. An imperative sentence advises, instructs, requests, or commands. It begins with a verb; the implied subject is you.In Text B, a father makes use of imperative sentences to give advice and instructions to his child who has just left home for college. For example: “Don’t be bound by what other people think.”“Pick friends who are genuine and sincere.”“Become the great thinker you were born to be.”In class the teacher can make the students compare the writing styles of Text A and Text B. Class activities may include pair work, group discussions, and mini-surveys about students’high school experience, their families and friends, and their expectations of college life.Section AToward a brighter future for allBackground information1. American higher educationIn the United States, students can choose to go to college after high school. (They can also choose to go straight to the workforce after high school.) They have the option of attending a two-year community college before applying to a four-year university. Admission to communitycollege is easier, tuition is lower, and class sizes are often smaller than at a university. Community college students can earn an associate agree and transfer up to two years of course credits to a university.College and university students need to pay tuition, but many earn scholarships or receive loans. Although admissions policies vary from one university to another, most determine admission based on several criteria, including a student’s high school course of study, high school Grade Point Average (GPA), participation in extracurricular activities, SAT(Scholastic Assessment Test) or ACT (American College Testing) exam scores, a written essay, and possibly a personal interview with a representative from the admissions office. Most students in the United States take the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT during their final year of high school. Each university sets a minimum SAT or ACT score that a student must achieve in order to gain admission. These are standardized quantitative examinations. The SAT tests critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills, The ACT tests English, mathematics, reading, science reasoning, and includes an optional writing test.Extracurricular activities may include scholastic clubs, athletic teams, student government, and philanthropic clubs. Voluntary participation in these kinds of activities is an indication that a student has learned valuable life lessons, such as teamwork, leadership, or civic responsibility.University students pursuing a bachelor’s degree are called “undergraduates”; students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree are called “graduate students”. Most universities give under graduate students a liberal education, which means students are required to take courses across several disciplines before they specialize in a major field of study. Graduate and professional programs, such as medicine or law, are specialized. All degree programs require students to complete a minimum number of credit hours before graduating.Selection for admission to a graduate program is based on several criteria. These include completion of a bachelor’s degree, the student’s undergraduate coursework and GPA. Students are also expected to write an essay as part of their application or to submit a writing sample. Most master’s programs require students to have a minimum score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), which tests verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills.Students continue to take course at the graduate level. A final thesis is required for most master’s programs. Doctoral students take course until they have earned enough credit hours to attempt their qualifying examinations. These are usually taken over several days and often include a written and oral component. After doctoral students pass their qualifying exams, they are advanced to candidacy and can begin writing their dissertation. Before the degree is given, the completed dissertation must be orally defended before the candidate’s faculty committee. 2. Vera WangVera Wang is a Chinese-American fashion designer. She was born and raised in New York City. While trained as a figure skater in high school, she eventually earned a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College in 1971. But a career in fashion was her dream. She worked as a senior fashion editor for Vogue magazine for 15 years. In 1985, she left vogue and joined Ralph Lauren as a design director for two years. In 1990, she opened her own design salon in New York, and featured her trademark bridal gowns. Wang has made wedding gowns for many celebrities and public figures, such as Jennifer Lopez (詹尼佛·洛佩兹), Sharon Stone (莎朗·斯通) and Chelsea Clinton (切尔西·克林顿).Detailed study of the text1. Your achievement is the triumph of years of hard work, both of your own and of your parents and teachers. (Para. 1)Meaning: Your entering this university is an important success. This success is due to many years of your hard work, and many years of your parents’ and teachers’ hard work.★triumph: n. [C] an important victory or success after a difficult struggle (尤指苦战后获得的)胜利,成功,成就Winning the championship was a great personal triumph for this young tennis player.赢得冠军对这个年轻的网球运动员来说是很大的个人成就。

Unit 1 Fresh StartSection A Toward a brighter future for allⅠObjectives:Students may be able to:To talk about college educationTo further understand the textTo apply the phrases and patternsTo master the paragraph writing skillⅡTeaching Focus and Difficulties1. understand the structure of the text2. apply the writing skills to organizing a paragraphⅢTeaching aidsMultimedia, chalk and blackboard Warming up activitiesⅣTeaching ProcedureStep 1:Warm-up activitiesUniversity education is a new journey in your life. It is a fresh start. You begin your journey with military training. The freshmen with the green military uniform have become a beautiful scenery line in the universities. Here comes my question:1. Do you think military training is necessary? Why or why not?Pros: It builds our body and confidence. Good heath is the foundation of a meaning life. It also seems to build teamwork among individual classes which is beneficial to our future career. It develops a spirit of discipline in life and help us better obey university rules. Another advantage is that it gives the students a taste of the military life. They have more respect for the men who protect their country, and they may even decide to pursue a military career. It can help shape our character and cultivate a spirit of endurance and willpower. The military drill is very tough, but it provides an opportunity to learn not to give up when faced with difficulties.Cons: military training often takes place in summer. It is too hot and is harmful to the health of students. And some instructors are likely to use physical punishment which leads to hurts in body and soul to students. They say that a short period of training can neither build up the bodies nor strengthen the willpower of college students. They argue that more attention should be paid to the daily exercise and activities. It is a waste of time and we should focus our attention on study.2. What are your expectations of your college life? You can acquire specialized knowledge about your major and develop my creative thinking ability and research skills. You have the opportunities to make more new friends and share ideas with people of different minds. You can gain a broader view of the world by meeting people fro diverse backgrounds and cultures. You can start a journey of self-discovery, self-improvement and self-fulfillment. You can have nice living condition and excellent condition for learning. You can study in a pleasant academic atmosphere. You can participate in more social practice. Well-equipped library and abundant online resources…Step 2. Structure of the textPart 1 (1-3): The president congratulates students on their achievement and reminds students of the fact that their current success was due to their own and their parents’ efforts, and that their future is built on a solid foundation of the past.1Part 2 (4-7) The president offers students comprehensive advice on how to make the most of their four college years and makes them realize the university’s expectations and their own responsibilities.Part 3 (8) The students are called upon to cherish the opportunity and to bear in mind their responsibilities as citizens of their communities, their country and the world.Step3. Our guest is Dr.Charles Adams, who is well-known for his research in the area of language learning.M: It’s a pleasure to be here.W: Now, Dr. Adams, tell us about your new book.M: Well, the name of it is Learning a Language over Eggs and Toast.W: Could you tell us about the title?M: Well, one of the most important keys to learning another language is to establish a regular study program, like planning a few minutes every morning around breakfast time.W: Now sorry for saying this, but you ideas may sound a little simplistic to our viewers.M: Well, I'm not implying that we can become fluent speakers in a matter of a few minutes here and there, but rather following a regular, consistent, and focused course of study can helpus on the way to language mastery.W: So what are some of the basic keys you are suggesting in the book?M: Well, as I just mentioned, people need to plan out their study by setting realistic and attainable goals from the beginning. And small steps, little by little, are the key. And as I have mentioned in my book, you can maximize your learning potential by learning about your own individual learning style.W: Well, Dr. Adams. What is your learning style?M: Well, I'm a very tactile learner.W: You mean one who learns through hands-on experience?M: Exactly.W: So what is my learning style?M: Well, you're going to have to read my book to find that out.W: Okay. Thanks for joining us.M: My pleasure.Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.19. Where does this interview most probably take place?20. According to Dr. Adams, what is one of the most important points in learning a foreignlanguage?21. What is true about finding out one's individual learning style?22. Which point is NOT mentioned in the interview?Conversation TwoW: What sports do you often go in for, Mr. Clinton?M: Oh, football-both kinds, you know, soccer, and rugby. I play quite a bit of cricket, too. Do you like sports, too, Miss Li?W: Yes, very much. I play basketball, but my favorite sport is table-tennis. What's your favorite sport?M: Mine is football. It’s the best way to build up your health, I think.W: That's true. I'm interested in it, too.M: Is football very popular in China now?W: Not really. In fact, only in recent years have people taken an interest in football. It's getting more and more popular, though. What about watching the football match tomorrow evening? I've got two tickets.M: Why, yes, that'll be nice. Thank you.W: By the way, people say in Britain there are many football fans behaving as troublemakers. Is that true?M: Yes, sometimes. In fact, only a few get out of control.W: British people have a keen interest in the game, as I can see.M: Right! Football fans are so dedicated that they travel hundreds of miles to see their favorite team in action and cheer it on to victory.Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have heard.23. What is the main topic of the conversation?24. What does the woman say about the present situation of football in China?25. What does the man think of British football fans?Section B:Passage OneSome mental health research has linked depressed in women with lower weight in their babies during the first year of life. They studied 632 women from small villages. The women were in good physical health and in the last three months of pregnancy. The study identified 160 of the women, or one in four, as depressed. They always felt sad or tired. They had problems eating or sleeping. They felt guilty and thought about killing themselves. The researchers compared these women with 160 others who were not depressed, Health workers then weighed and measured the babies of both groups at birth. Re-examinations took place at two, six and twelve months of age. The health workers also re-examined the mental health of the mothers.Babies whose mothers remained depressed grew less than the babies of the other women. The babies of the depressed mothers were also more likely to get sick. Earlier studies showed that ten to fifteen percent of pregnant women and new mothers in Western nations suffer from depression. Other studies in South Aisa have found that depression affects almost two times as many women in developing countries.A new program will be started to help these new mothers. In the program health workers will visit new mothers for up to a year. The workers offer advice about things like health and cleanliness. The health workers will also listen to the mother's problems and suggest some easy things at first that she can do for her baby. The program will be tested for three years to see how well it succeeds.Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.26. What is the research mainly about?27. Which of the following is a finding of the research?28. What do the health workers do to help the depressed women according to the passage? Passage TwoThe oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. Some of the pyramids still look much as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often , for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever. It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved. However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. Consequently, we are only able to guess the methods uesd. Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologists have formed a fairly clear picture of them.Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.29. What caused the damage to some of the pyramids?30. What helped to preserve the pyramids?31. How can we guess at the methods uesd to build the pyramids?Passage ThreeThere are three groups of English learners: beginners, intermediate learners, and learners of special English. Beginners need to learn the basics of English. Students who have reached an intermediate level benefit from learning general English skills. But what about students who want to learn specialist English for their work or professional life? Most students, who fit into this third group have a clear idea about what they want to learn. A bank clerk , for example, wants to use this specialist vocabulary and technical terms of finance. But for teachers, deciding how to teach specialist English is not always so easy. For a start, the variety is enormous. Every field from airline pilots to secretaries has its own vocabulary and technical terms. Teachers also need to have an up-to-date knowledge of that specialist language, and not many teachers are exposed to working environments outside the classroom. These issues have influenced the way specialist English is taught in schools. This type of course is usually known as English for Specific Purposes, or ESP and there are ESP courses for almost every area of professional and working life. In Britain, for example, there are courses which teach English for doctors, lawyers, reporters, travel agents and people working in the hotel industry. By far, the most popular ESP courses are for business English.Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.32. What is the speaker mainly talking about?33. What is the characteristic of learners of special English?34. Who needs ESP courses most?35. What are the most popular ESP courses in Britain?Section CA new report says the Himalayan mountains are threatened by the warming of the Earth's climate. The report says human activities are partly responsible for the warming temperatures. The climate changes threaten people's lives, the local economy and the environment. The Himalayas are the highest mountain system in the world. A team of mountain climbers from Britain, New Zealand and Chile recently traveled to the Himalayas. They gathered information about the environment. They spoke to local people and other travelers about the condition of the world's most famous mountains. Their findings confirmed the above report. They found that warmer weather has been melting huge mountains of ice in the Himalayas. These melting glaciers are creating lakes that could overflow and flood wide areas. Temperatures in the area have risen one degree Celsius during the past thirty years. Satellite maps show that the glaciers are shrinking at a rate of thirty to forty meters each year. The study identified almost 5,000 glacier lakes in Nepal and Bhutan. Researchers say forty-four of these lakes could overflow during the next five years. UN officials say this flooding could have serious effects on local communities and the environment. However, they say it may be possible to remove water from the lakes before they overflow and use that water to create energy.Observers say community action is helping to restore the mountain environment. However, researchers say the Himalayas have been harmed by an increase in visitors to the area, over-cutting of trees and other environmental destruction. UN officials say the glacier melt in the Himalayas should be a warning to industrial countries to reduce heat -trapping gases thatcause global warming.参考答案Part I WritingIs a Foreign language Learning Necessary?Facing translation problems, some people turn to translation software and language tools for help. It seems that one can make it possible to translate any language to another by downloading those software and tools from the Internet.Offering wide range of translation services such as online translation, language localizations and translation of texts and e-mails, translation software and language tools seem to play an increasing important role in the 21st century. On this point, many people argue that it is unnecessary to learn a foreign language. They think that now that translation software and language tools are so powerful and convenient, why should one spare no pains to study a foreign language? All in all, they believe dictionaries and human translators will be replaced some day. However, in my opinion, language learning is necessary. As a student, acquisition of knowledge should be given top priority, so does language learning. Using their own talents to translate languages will give people much pleasure and a sense of fulfillment and achievement, which can not be gained by using translation software and language tools. So a foreign language learning is necessary.Part II Reading Comprehension1-7DBCDACB8 A little teamwork 9.
