Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, lie a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New Yor City, for eample, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities lie London or Paris. People went there for gold. They trave lled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, illing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities lie food and wood were very epensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alasa, they left Dawson City as quicly as they had come. Today, people still come and go —to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City —its present population is 762.

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and eamination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.
Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed —no eamination is perfect —but to have no tests or eamination would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in eaminations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luc since every pupil would depend on the efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher.
Without eaminations, employers will loo for employees from the highly respected schools and from families nown to them —a form of favoritism will replace equality at the moment. The bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for a job, while the lac of certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of ecellence and opportunity would disappear if eaminations were taen away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school’s reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child from the favored school.
The opponents(反对者) of the eamination system suggest that eaminations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.
32.The word “favoritism”in paragraph 3 is used to describe the phenomenon that _________.
A. bright children also need certificates to get satisfying jobs.
B. poor children with certificates are favored in job marets.
C. children from well-respected schools tend to have good jobs.
D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great success.
33.What would ha ppen if eaminations were taen away according to the author?
A. Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.
B. Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.
C. Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.
D. There would be more opportunities and ecellence.
34.The opponents of the eamination system will agree that _________.
A. schools with academic subjects should be done away with
B. computers should be selected to tae over many jobs
C. special classes are necessary to eep the school standards
D. jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection
35.The passage mainly focuses on _________.
A.eamination and equality
B. schools and certificates
C. opportunity and employment
D. standards and reputation
