It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I’m not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized it or not, women are besieged by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth ?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their minds proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced with many troubles and may be called “aunt” or “granny” can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage , concern for others, etc.
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concept. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty that is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good looks are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and looks.
56. According to the first paragraph, why are women caught by a sea of fashion ?
A. Because they are rich.
B. Because they are taught to follow any fashion.
C. Because they don’t dare to look attractive.
D. Because they think that they will look youthful and charming with beautiful clothes.

D. Wealth

A. The richness of women’s minds proves to be more beautiful than their looks
B. A woman who may be called “aunt” is no longer beautiful
C. A woman who has experienced many troubles may still maintain her beauty
D. It is not necessary for women to show their beauty through their beautiful clothes
59. What is the best way for a woman to appear young according to the writer ?
A. Dressing up
B. Reading and learning
C. Feeding the flower
D. Making up

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a hurt brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives only three to five minutes. Sometimes the hurt brain gets better by itself. More often the doctors can’t fix the hurt. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help. It is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctor might make the person worse if he works on the brain.
Dr. Robert J. White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for thirty minutes. This gives the doctors a longer time to do something for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs. Then he operated on them. He made the monkeys’blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys’ brains. When the brain temperature was 50 degrees. Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back. He warmed the blood again. After their operations, the monkeys were like they were before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.
Dr. White’s idea works well on the monkeys. Are there other problems on human beings? Dr. White thinks doctors will use his idea on human beings. He thinks it will help people who have heart problems, too. A person doesn’t have to die when his heart stops. Doctors can start it again. The problems e when the brain is without blood for three to five minutes, the person has a living body, but a dead brain. Maybe in the future , doctors will try Dr. White’s idea. Without proper training, dogs will behave like wild animals. They will soil your house, destroy your belongs, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place.
One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to train it. Obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems . But it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of munication between you and your dog. Effective munication is necessary to instruct your dog in what you want it to do.
Training is also an easy way to establish the social order. When your dog obeys a simple request of “e here! Sit” it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack by using extreme measures. You can teach you’re your dog its subordinate role by teaching it to show obedience to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to accept that you are in charge.
Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. A well –trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.

Excused from recycling(回收利用) because you live in a high rise with a rubbish chute(垃圾道)? You won't be for long . Miami's Mark Shantzis has made it simple for those living in tall buildings to use the chute and recycle too .
In Shantzis' Hi-Rise Recycling System , a chute leads to a pie-shaped container with six boxes that can turn around when operated . The system , which fits in the same space as the chute and container now in use , enables glass , plastic , paper , metal , and other rubbish to go into separate boxes .
The system is controlled from a board next to the chute door . The board has a button for each class of recycling materials (as well as for unrecyclables). At the press of a button , a microputer locks all other floors' chute door and sets the recycling container turning until the right box es under the chute . The puter also counts the loads and gives a signal by phone when the box is full . And a particular piece of equipment breaks up the nonrecyclables
Sorting(分类) recyclables before they are collected saves the use of expensive materials recovery equipment which otherwise has to do the sorting . Such equipment often makes recycled materials very expensive , so expensive that tons of recyclables remain wasted . Shantzis believes his system could help recycled materials bee more cost-effective.
