American LaMar Baylor spends most of his time in New York City, working as a performer in the Broadway musical —The Lion King. But since 2011, he has also spent weeks in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. There, he teaches dance to boys who live on the street. His teaching is part of an effort by the Rebecca Davis Dance Company. The project helps young people learn more about dance and learn how to behave in a classroom environment.

They have lost all of their families, some even have been in prison. “They have been through things that no one should ever have to go through,” said Baylor. Boys who have done best in the classes win scholarships, and are sent to the Sunrise Boarding School. About 30 boys have won this kind of financial aid. All the students are male, because few girls in Rwanda live freely on the street.
The Rwanda program is the largest one set up by the Rebecca Davis Dance Company, founded and directed by Rebecca Davis. Ms. Davis has also set up dance programs in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Guinea. About 2,000 children in the three countries have taken part in the project since it was launched in 2010.
As for LaMar Baylor, he knows from his own experience how dance can lead to a better life. He is from Camden, New Jersey. Camden has sometimes been called America’s poorest and most dangerous city. From a small warehouse in North Salt Lake City, Utah, a little-known company called Go Natural CNG is about to release a new home refueling system after more than two years of research.
The system, backed by technology giant Parker Hannifin Corp, will fill up quicker than some models—about one gallon an hour—and last up to 20 years, according to Go Natural CNG Chief Executive Lucas Kjar. The unit, expected by the end of the year, will use hydraulic technology to compress (压缩) the gas for vehicle use, he said. He did not say how much the unit would cost.
But Go Natural may have a lot of competition. General Electric, Whirlpool and Eaton are all working on home refueling technologies expected to be launched in the next couple of years.
General Electric, which received $1.8 million from the government to develop its system, aims to release a unit that will cool natural gas to minus 50 degrees Celsius to extract (提取) water and other contaminates before refueling. GE aims to sell the unit at $500, about a tenth of the cost of current models.
General Electric said it was in the development phase and declined to comment on the program’s progress.
Honda, which makes the natural gas-fired Honda Civic GX, has contacted GE and Whirlpool to discuss their plans, according to Elmer Hardy, Honda’s senior manager of alternative fuel vehicles.
Eaton, which received $3.4 million from the government to develop the technology, is working on a unit at its labs in Southfield, Michigan, that would use liquids to compress the gas instead of the traditional metal pistons(活塞). It aims to make a unit available for $500 by 2015.
“We are seeing if we can do it in a way that reduces the price point,” said Clark Fortune, who leads the program at Eaton. “The adoption will improve if the costs come down.”

Everybody loves to play board games sometimes, but it is surprising to know how long this pastime has been in existence. Some of the earliest board games are over 5,000 years old. The oldest is probably Senet, an American Egyptian game which has been found in burials from before 3000 BC. The game involves an element of luck, and so it was thought by the Ancient Egyptians that those who won the game were protected by God. For this reason, games of Senet were often buried alongside the dead body, to be used on the dangerous game board is set out as a grid of three by ten rows, and uses two sets of at least five pawns. The actual rules are unknown, although some historians have proposed rules which were used in the Senet sets available today.
The Royal Game of Ur, also known as the Game of Twenty Squares, is another ancient game which dates back to the First Dynasty of Ur, in 2600 BC Mesopotamia. Although the ancient rules are unknown, a stone tablet has been found which describes a reliable record of how the game was played in 177-176 BC.

Ride sharing startup Zimride is launching a new experimental mobile app called Lyft that will enable
drivers and riders to connect in real time, and even watch the drivers drive to the agreed upon pick-up spot via a map on the smartphone.
Booking a lift via Zimride can be a good choice for a long trip that you schedule in advance. But what about if you want to catch a ride right now? Just turn to the mobile app Lyft!
The app, only available via invite now, lets potential riders look for available drivers close by and request rides. The riders and drivers can look at each other’s profiles and the app is using Facebook Connect for log-in and social security. Once booked, riders can watch their drivers drive to them on a mobile map in real time. Riders pay the driver based on a suggested donation mobile via the app itself (no cash exchange) and Zimride says the rides will be about 30 percent cheaper than a cab.
The biggest problem with these types of apps will likely be safety issues—riders getting picked up by drivers they don’t feel comfortable with. To address some of these concerns, the company says drivers will be investigated via car inspections, background check, personal interviews and DMV record checks. Zimride says its fellow 500 Startups-backed company Task Rabbit advised it on some of these security moves.
For now the service will only be available during the evening rush hours. Over time, the service will be available 24 hours, says Zimride. San Francisco is rapidly becoming a test bed for these types of next-generation, more efficient, transportation apps, like Scoot Networks and Ridepal.

Our world is a noisy place, but quiet places remain. Eight years ago, audio (声音的) engineer Gordon
Hempton identified the quietest place in the continental United States. He calls the place “One Square Inch of Silence.” He has used his symbolic spot in a northwestern rain forest to campaign agains t noise pollution. But the self-described “Sound Tracker” is now going deaf.
For Gordon Hempton, it started with an experience known to many people. “I was lying in the bed in the springtime about a year ago. The sun was shining. The birds could be singing. They should be singing. But I was hearing none. I knew my life was going to be different.”
Hempton’s eyes get watery as he describes his cruel situation. More than 20 years ago he trademarked his nickname as “The Sound Tracker.” Sharp hearing de fined his career as an Emmy award winning sound recordist. It also led to his activism against noise pollution. He has circled the globe three times in search of the perfect sounds of nature.
Hempton says his hearing loss is quickly getting worse but he has to finish his project.
“I am running a race to finish the Quiet Planet collection.” That’s the title of a planned 19-volume set of nature recordings. The sound tracks could be licensed for use in movies, video games, exhibits, plays and the like. V olunteer assistants now help Hempton review and edit sound files and identify imperfections.
The exact cause of his hearing loss is not clear. Doctors say it may be the result of an infection, or a tumor (肿瘤) or a combination of things. Hempton is self-employed.
