The composing(writing music) career of Albert Roussel got off to a changeable start, and received one of its biggest succes ses from a lie.
Roussel lost his parents at the age of eight and went to live wi th his grandfather. He built on the music he had learn
ed from his mother, entertaining himself by reading through th e family music collection and playing operatic selections and popular songs on the piano. Three years later Roussel’s gran dfather died, and his mother's sister took him in. Her husband arranged for young Albert to take piano lessons. Summer vac ations at a Belgian seaside added a second love to his life —the sea. He studied to be a soldier in the navy, but still made t ime to study music.
In the French Navy, he and two friends found
time to play the music of Beethoven and other composers. Ro ussel also began composing. At the Church of the Trinity in C herbourg on Christmas Day 1892, he had his first public appe arance as a composer. That success encouraged Roussel to write a wedding march, and one of his fellow naval officers off ered to show it to a famous conductor, Edouard Colonne. Wh en Roussel’s friend returned with the manuscript (手
稿), he reported that Colonne had advised Roussel to give up his naval career and devote his life to music.
Not long afterward, at the age of 25, Roussel did just that. He applied the qualities that he had developed in the navy to his composing and became a major force in twentieth century Fre nch music. As for Edouard Colonne’s inspiring advice that Ro ussel should devote his life to music, Roussel's naval friend la
ter admitted that he had made it up and that he had never eve n shown Roussel’s manuscript to the conductor.

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, tim e and effort be spent exploring and researching something wit h so few obvious benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and peo
ple on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are v ery often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup (基因构成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and en vironments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring spa ce is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible. Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by
doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its e ffects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潜在的) resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate nee
d of them, they will perhaps b
e useful later. Resources may b
e more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or qu ality o
f our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs includin
g improvements in earthquake prediction, in satell ites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品) of technological deve
lopments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small retur n, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intellige nt members of our species to focus on what may serve to sav e us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space,
the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other pla nets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human li fe and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in t he future.
33. Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To express his doubts.
B. To compare different ideas.
C. To introduce points for discussion.
D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
34. What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragra ph2?
A. Humans are nature-born to do so.
B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food.
D. Humans don’t like to stay in the same place.
35. What makes it possible for humans to live on other planet s?
A. Our genetic makeup.
B. The adaptive ability of humans.
C. Resources on the earth.
D. By-products in space exploration.

Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you r ush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters. Lower the pressure
39 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easi ng up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.
40
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even t hough it’s not schoolwork,
you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.

Dear Grandma,
It was nice seeing you at Christmas. You looked so happy!
After losing two grandparents within the past year, I have taken some time to reflect on what i s most important. I want to let you know what a positive influence you have been on me. I am the person I am because of you.
I remember being on your farm a lot when I was younger. I remember the projects you plann ed for us. We painted rocks to represent our family members. We made doll clothes out of co lorful socks. We made many "playhouses" in the woods.
We learned that if you left a bucket of soybeans in the rain, you would soon have a bucket of growing beans. We learned that if we helped pick the strawberries in the morning, we'd have them on our ice cream in the afternoon. We learned that some plants have funny names, like the elephant ear plant. We learned that you could make anything with what you had. We lear ned that making things out of paper and cardboard was more fun than what came inside the packaging. We learned it was OK to get dirty, but Grandma would wash us up before Mom c ame.
You once made models of everyone's houses, which made me want to be an architect. Anot her time, you made quilts for all of the grandkids. I still use mine every night. The edge has w
orn out. But you taught me how to fix it.
I love and respect you. You are always patient, with a quiet determination. Grandma, thank y ou for everything you have taught me. I hope that I am able to pass on all these memories an d skills to my children and grandchildren.
Love always,
Kelly
