The loveliest house that I’v
I was a child. The name of the house was Crosslands. And I have some very happy memories of Crosslands.
It was, it seemed, so huge to me as a child. And it had a lovely living room with a piano in it
and a lovely sort of hall with lots of carpets and chests and antiques (古董) and so on. And there
was a mysterious room. It was the drawing room, and we only used it on Sundays, or Christmas
Day or Easter Day, and I used to be amazed about this room because it had the best furniture in it
but it was covered up with sheets. It was as if all the furniture was wearing clothes and it seemed
to me ridiculous that we couldn’t enjoy this beautiful furniture all the week through. And probably my favorite room was the kitchen. It had a lovely red flagstone (石板) floor, which was always
highly polished, and an Aga, you know, one of those big cookers that heats the whole room so it
was always warm there. It was a very warm room with baked bread and my grandmother used to
make ice cream and we’d eat it in there and... there was a vegetable garden leading from there so I spent a lot of time in the vegetable garden picking peas and eating them—my grandmother used to
get really cross with me because I used to pick all the vegetables and the fruit for our meals and
then I’d eat half of them, because they tasted so delicious coming fresh from the garden.
I went back to it a few years ago and it was a big mistake. They’ve modernized it inside,
they’ve got rid of those lovely old fire-places... have just gone. And they’ve knocked a wall down
so the drawing room and the living room have become one big modern plastic kind of room. But I
think what upset me most about it was the feeling that the house had shrunk. It had become
smaller and my memory of this lovely large warm comfortable house had turned into an old house
with modernized rooms inside it. And it taught me a lesson really, that you can’t go back on
there.

Curitiba, Brazil, has been called the most innovative (创新) city in the world. City officials
from around the world visit Curitiba to learn how the city, with relatively limited funds, has been solving urban (都市的) problems. By using imaginative, low-cost solutions and low technology, Curitiba has created a pleasant urban life that many cities in the more developed nations have yet
to achieve. Here is how the city achieved this.
Transportation
The city has made public transportation attractive, affordable and efficient. Instead of building a subway, which the city could not afford, it established a system of extended, high-speed buses, some carrying as many as 275 passengers, o n express routes, connecting the city center with outlying areas. Many people own cars in Curitiba but 85 percent of the commuters(通勤者) use public transportation. This has reduced traffic jams and air pollution. There are 30 percent fewer cars on city streets than you would expect from the number of cars owned by its residents.
Trash Collection
Poor people are encouraged to collect recyclable trash (垃圾) in the areas where they live and turn it in for food. In 1995 the city gave out about 350,000 Easter eggs, 25000 Christmas cakes,
and 2 million pounds of food in exchange for trash. About 70 percent of its trash is recycled, one
of the highest rates in the world.
Education
Small libraries have been built throughout the city in the shape of a lighthouse. Called Lighthouses of Learning, they provide books (many schools in Brazil have no books), an attractive study room, and in a tower, a strong light and guard to make the area safe.
Health
Curitiba has more health clinics(小诊所) – that are open 24 hours a day – per person than any other city in Brazil.
Environmental Education
The Free University for the Environment was built out of recycled old utility poles next to a
lake made from an old quarry (采石场). Short courses on how to make better use of the environment have been designed for contractors, merchants and housewives. Taxi drivers are required to take a course there in order to get their licences (执照).
Curitiba is still a Third World city, with at least 10% of its 1.6 million people living in slums
of corrugated tin-and-wood shanties. And its innovations were made gradually. But the city now
stands as a model for urban planners, and mayors from around the world have visited Curitiba to
learn from its experiments.
45. What is special about the city of Curitiba?
A. It attracts many tourists to learn from its experiments.
B. It solves urban problems without spending too much money.
C. It has the cheapest subway system in Brazil for commuters.
D. It forces more people to have environmental education.
46. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. most citizens in Curitiba choose buses because they can’t afford a car
B. poor people in Curitiba have the technology to turn trash into food
C. other cities in Brazil are also building lighthouses to encourage reading
D. citizens in Curitiba can go to health clinics at any time they want
47. The underlined phrase in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. urban areas
B. poor areas
C. rich areas
D. downtown areas
C
The saying that children don’t like reading any more has been proved untrue. A new study
finds that 75 percent of kids between five and seventeen say that although they love technology,
they still want to read books.
The Kids & Family Reading Report also says that 62 percent of kids prefer reading printed
books rather than those on a computer. At the same time, those who search an author’s website or
use the Internet to find books by a particular author, are more likely to read books for fun every
day.
The study also once again proves that the time kids spend reading books for fun decreases after the age of eight and continues to drop through the teen years. The report is a follow-up to a
2006 study. But this time the focus is on the role of technology and when kids’ interest in reading starts to drop.
―Despite the fact that after the age of eight more children go online daily than read for fun
daily, high frequency Internet users are more likely to read books for fun every day,‖ says Heather Carter, a writer of the report.
One in four kids between five and seventeen say they read books for fun every day and more
than half of kids say they read books for fun at least two to three times a week. One of the key reasons kids say they don’t read more often is that they have trouble finding books they like—a requirement that parents underestimate (低估).
The study also finds that parents have a strong influence on kids’ reading, but only about half of all parents begin reading to their kids before their first birthday. The percent of children who are read to every day drops from 38 percent among five-to eight-year-olds to 23 percent among nine-to 11-year-olds—exactly the same time t hat kids’ daily reading for fun starts to drop.
―Parents’ engagement (参与) in their child’s reading from birth all the way through the teen years can have a great influence (影响) on how often their children read and how much they enjoy adds Carter.

In many romantic movies or TV shows one scene always appears. It involves a handsome
man standing outside a young woman’s window, singing a love song to her to win her over.
However, trying to woo a female with songs is not just something that humans do. A few animals
sing love songs as well. Birds and elephants are romantic but the latest animal to serenade a
female might surprise you---it is the humble mouse.
You may find it odd to find out that mice sing. We do not hear them because the frequency of
their voice is so high. In fact, scientists have known for some time that male mice make special
sounds to females, but it has always been assumed that the sounds are produced instinctively (本
能地) and randomly, with little thought going into the process. But new research suggests
otherwise. When male mice with different voices were put in a cage together, scientists found that
they would gradually change their pitches (音调) to sound like one another. But when a female
mouse was put in the cage with two males, one male would change his pitch to match the other. ―It

was usually the smaller animal changing the pitch to match the larger animal,‖
Jarvis, leader of the study, from Duke University, US, told BBC News. This ability, known as
vocal learning, is rare in the natural world. It had been thought to be limited to some birds, such as
parrots---as well as whales and dolphins. The latest findings challenge the long-held opinion that
mice cannot learn to adapt (调整) their voices.
Scientists also found the part of the brain that controls the mice’s singing ability. In the
experiment, they damaged the cells in this part of the mice’s brain and found that the animals
couldn’t keep their songs in pitch or repeat them any more. This also happened whe n the mice
became deaf. Jarvis said that this finding had changed his understanding of the way mice make
sound. ―In mice we find that the pathways that are at least adapting these vocalizations (发声法)
he said. ―If

are in the forebrain, in places where you actually find them in humans,‖
wrong, these findings will be a big boost(促进)to scientists studying diseases like autism(自闭
症)and anxiety disorders.‖
52. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word ―serenade‖?
A. To sing love songs.
B. To challenge others.
C. To hug others.
D. To fight for love.
53. Which of the following is proven wrong by the latest discovery?
A. The frequency of mice’s voice is so high that it’s impossible for humans to hear it.
B. When male mice make special sounds to f emales they can’t control the sounds.
C. Birds and elephants are both romantic animals that are good at expressing love.
D. Animals like mice are smart even though they often make sounds randomly.
54. What do parrots, whales and dolphins have in common according to the passage?
A. They are all animals well-known for their smart appearances.
B. They are often chosen to carry out scientific experiments on.
C. They all have the ability to learn to adapt their voices.
D. Their numbers are quite limited in the natural world.
55. Romantic movies and TV shows are mentioned at the beginning of the passage to ________.
A. help readers better understand the article
B. stress the importance of the article
C. explain why this article is written
D. get readers interested in the topic
