Children are our future, and it’s up to us to arm them with the tools to succeed. Sadly, today’s children are being armed with more dangerous tools like weapons(武器), drugs and gangs. Once a relatively peaceful environment, many schoolyards of today are becoming unsafe for both students and teachers.
Home schools are available to give you choices. Home schooling provides top-quality education, flexibility, and freedom to create your own schedule. At Heritage Home School we believe the choice should be yours.
Thanks in part to modern technology, home schooling information is becoming readily available across our nation. A recent study by the ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) and TAP (Tests of Achievement and Proficiency) show us that students of home schools do particularly well when compared with the nationwide average. In every subject at every grade level, students of home schooling scored obviously higher than those in public and private schools.
If you’re new to home schooling, you may be asking yourself, “Will home schools really work for my children?”
Fact: A nationwide study using a random(任意) selection of 1,516 families found students of home schooling to be scoring, on average, at or above the 80th percentile in all areas on standardized achievement test.
Note: The national average on standardized achievement tests is the 50th percentile.
Collectively, the staff at Heritage Home School brings 65 years of experience in home schooling curriculum. We’ve placed students in the top 2%of the nation in math and many are successfully moving on to college.
One study found that of the home school adults, 94% said home education prepared them to be independent persons.

HANOT --- A 15-month-old girl and a man are the latest suspected cases of bird flu infection(感染) in Vietnam, a senior health official said on Wednesday as attention turned to pigs as possible carries for the illness. Both patients are suspected of contracting avian influenza(禽流感) strain A, also known as H5N1, Dau Ngoc Hao, deputy director of the Agriculture Ministry’s Veterinary Department in Hanoi, said. They were among 15 people who fell in with influenza in Hanoi and surrounding provinces. Twelve, most of them children, have died. The World Health Organization said on Tuesday tests conducted by a Hong Kong laboratory had confirmed that bird flu killed three of the 15.
Hao suspected pigs were playing a role in the transmission of bird flu to humans. “It is possible that the bird flu virus spreads from chickens to pigs before jumping to humans,” he said, but did not laborate(详细描述). Local officials said ducks and pigs were also dying in southern provinces. By Wednesday, the virus has killed nearly 1.4 million chickens in the southern provinces of Long An and Tien Giang. “The situation in southern V ietnam is still very complicated,” Hao said. Peter Cordingley, a spokesman for the WHO’s Western Pacific headquarter in Manila, said: “We’re worried that the virus will latch onto a normal human influenza virus, which is extremely contagious(传染性的) and then we’ll have a big problem.”
Cordingley stressed there was “no evidence of human-to-human transmission” among the Vietnam flu victims.
“While there are people falling sick inside families, it’s more likely that the transmission --- if it comes from anywhere --- comes from the chickens,” he said. Hanoi declared last week that it had been struck by a fast-spreading bird flu that has hit other countries nearby, which have a vast poultry(家禽) industry.
South Korea, which has already culled nearly 2 million chickens and ducks, reported last Tuesday the first new case of avian flu in more than a week, dashing hopes that the outbreak was subsiding(平息). Hundreds of people living in affected areas have been given blood tests, although a health official said to one had shown the symptoms of the disease. Japan reported its first bird flu outbreak in years on Monday.

“I’ve changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my dad back.” Lucien Lawrence’s letter to Father Christmas written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that with out his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.
But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one dya, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see then again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor , I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all mother said was, “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.
It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready ad Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors(), and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause.
I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword, and my darling from the power of the dog.” Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

The word conservation has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea the treasure were “limitless” and “inexhaustible”. Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.
Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; wood was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word “conservation” had nothing of the meaning that i t has for us today.
For the interests of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers. Conservations should, therefore, be made a part of everyone’s daily life. To know about the water table in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to yield (produce) their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big, nature trees, because living space for most of man’s fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.
59. According to the author the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that ___________.
A.they had no idea about scientific forestry
B.they had little or no sense of environmental protection
C.they did not realize the importance
D.they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials
60. It can be inferred from the passage that earlier generations didn’t realize __________.
A.the interdependence of water, soil, and living things
B.the importance of the proper land use
C.the harmfulness of soil destruction and river floods
D.the extraordinary rapid growth of population
61. With a view to correcting the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that____________.
A.we plant more trees
B.we be taught environmental science, as well as the science of plants
C.environmental education be directed toward everyone
D.we return to nature
62. What doe s the author imply by saying “living space…is figured…also in cubic volume above the earth’?
A.Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller.
B.Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.
C.We need to take some measures to protect space.
D.We must create better living conditions for both birds and animals.
63. The underlined word “restore” probably is closet to the meaning of __________.
A. put back
B. bring back
C. keep
D. protect
E
What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate’s need to study for an exam may take priority over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic interest may have other choices.
In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not always prevail---other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merit of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves.
Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome interruption into their lives. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable---to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be ethical(合乎道义的) or unethical, selfless or selfish, inspiring or degrading. Persuaders may enlighten our mind or prey on our vulnerability. Ethical persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, the most basic part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.
Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is necessary to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the bedrock of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution(美国宪法)
64. According to the passage, persuasion means __________.
A. changing others’ point of view
B. exercising power over other people
C. getting other people to consider your point of view
D. getting people to agree with you and do what you want
65. The underlined word in the second passage “prevail” means ___________.
A. win
B. fail
C. speak
D. listen
66. The passage states that some people object to persuasion because they think it is ___________.
A. a danger to society
B. difficult to do well
C. unwelcome behavior
D. never successful
67. The passage mainly discusses _____________.
A. how people persuade
B. why people persuade
C. that persuasion is both good and bad
D. that persuasion is important and it is all around us

“I sat-in at a restaurant for six months, and when they finally agreed to serve me, they didn’t have what I wanted” ---so went a famous line. In reality, the sit-in movement was not a joke. It began in Greensboro, North Carolina, at 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of February 1, 1960. On that day, Ezell Blair Jr., Joseph McNeil, David Richmond, and Franklin McClain entered an F.W. Woolworth store. They sat down at a segregated lunch counter, ordered coffee, and then refused to leave when told,” We don’t serve Negroes.”
The four young men had expected not to be served. What no one had expected, however, was that they would sit there and politely, but firmly, refused to leave. This was 1960, and throughout the South black people were not allowed to sit at the same lunch counters with whites, swim at the same beaches, use the same water fountains, or worship at the same churches. Segregation was the law and it meant separation of the races in every way.
The next day, the four returned to Wo olworth’s --- this time accompanied by sixteen other students. Again they sat at the lunch counter and requested service. Again they were refused. And again, they declined to leave. On Wednesday, February 3, seventy students filled the Woolworth’s store. T his time, the group included white students as well as black. Many brought school books and studied while they waited. By this time, their protest had become known nationwide as a “sit-in.”
On Thursday, there was trouble. An angry group of white teenagers began shoving and cursing them but were quickly removed by the police. By February 10, the sit-in movement had spread to five other states.
By September 1961, more than 70,000 people, both black and white, had participated in sit-ins at segregated restaurants and lunch counters, kneel-ins at segregated churches, read-ins at segregated libraries, and swim-ins at segregated pools and beaches. Over 3,600 people had been arrested, and more than 100 students had been expelled(开除). But they were getting results. Many places did agree to integrate. On June 10, 1964, the U.S. Senate passed a major civil rights bill outlawing racial discrimination in all public places. President Lyndon Johnson signed it on July 2, and it became law. But the highest credit still goes to the four brave students from North Carolina who first sat-in and waited it out.
68. The year in which the sit-in movement began: ________________
69. What the protestors did on the first day of the sit-in: ______________________________________________
