The Eric Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed NEW YORK from Buffalo on Lake Eric Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal served as a route which industrial goods could flow into the west, and

When American students graduate from college, they must find jobs for themselves. But often they get help from their college and university. Every college has a career counseling office. The people who work there help students learn about different kinds of jobs and the chances for employment. Students can discuss their first year of college. Some use the information a counselor gives them when deciding what subjects to study.

A problem has been troubling me and I would like to share it with you. We seem to be living in a large difficult situation, and I know if there is a solution. I am not sure that it is a problem, but here it is.
Let’s begin by looking at the world situation. We have argued that wars must be given up. Bur modern techno ledges have brought us to the point where weapons of mass destruction are becoming easier and cheaper to make. Now they are in the possession of a few large military powers. Before long, it is likely that other nations will also have the ability to develop and use there terrible weapons. If this happens, or when this happens, many countries have the ability to destroy other countries, and other nations probably will have time for retaliatory (报复)strike. Under these conditions there can be no winners, only losers.
In spite of this terrible international situation, in our lives we place the highest value on winning, we are taught that everyone loves a winner and that winning is everything. Our sports teams are told that they must win. Our entertainment culture is based on winning. Contests are held to determine the winner. This become a matter of local and national pride. We are taught to win.
When there are winners, there are losers. There are nothing in the
between. This is what we are taught. It is part of our western culture.
Our western societies praise winning. They do not consider impasse (僵局)as a choice. A tie game , for example is said be like kissing your sister. It please no one . in most of our sports games, we have additional periods of time in order to avoid a tie game. In football it is called sudden death. Even our language is full of words against the game. We call such games deadlocks deadheads or stalemates.
68. What worries the author according to the passage?
A. trying to be winners
B. developing terrible weapons.
C. destroying the world
D. Retaliatory strikes
69. The author thinks the present situation is ________.
A. peaceful
B. serious
C. encouraging
D. astonishing.
70. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. there are only winners in our daily lives.
B. Everyone must win in our daily lives.
C. We are forced to win in our daily lives.
D. IN our daily lives winners are valued most.
71. The underlined words “kissing your sister”probably has the same meaning as ______
A. interesting B, uninteresting C. exciting D. wrong.
E.
The English language is changing fast, thanks to the rapid progress of technology. We all have a rapid choice, we can bury our heads in the sand
and spend the rest of the lives wishing Shakespeare were alive and well, or we can embrace the new English, enter into the spirit of the Internet age called Weblish.
“You cannot avoid it, for the simple reason that whenever a new variety of language comes along, it inevitably impacts on the language as whole.” Says Dr. David Crystal honorary professor of linguistics (语言学家)at the University of Wales in Bangor, whose book “Language and the Internet” has just been published.
The trouble with keeping up with the new English is not do much that there are so many new words but that the old words no longer mean what we thought they did. In the past, if someone said they did not have Windows, you would have to suppose they lived in a cave. These days, it is probably because they use a Mac (which is a computer, not a raincoat). Spam is as disliked as it ever was, but whereas it once meant an unappetizing canned meat, it now stands for unwanted “junk”email. Spelling are changing too. Not only is text- messaging playing “hve wth vrbs”(havoc with verbs), but the conventions of email communication place little emphasis on perfect spelling.
Weblish loves to see nouns happily become verbs (please bookmark this site), and verbs become nouns (send me the download). Verbs and prepositions are regularly thrown together to become new nouns or adjectives (dial – up, logon, print – out, pull- down, upload)., while others are created from simply pairing nouns: cyberspace, Ethernet, Internet, hyperlink, metatag, netspeak.
72. The best title of the passage would be ______
A. Keep up with the Latest Weblish.
B. Keep up with the Latest Development in English.
C. Newly-invented English Words
D. Technology and English
73. We can infer from the first paragraph that _______
A. some people wish Shakespeare were alive .
B. people may have different attitude towards weblish
C. all people welcome weblish.
D. weblish cause fear among people.
74. The author thinks the main difficulty for people in keeping up with weblish is that ______
A. old words take on new meaning.
B. there are so many new words.
C. the technology is changing too fast.
D. weblish words are full of spelling mistakes.
75. Dr. David Crystal would probably agree that ______
A. people should not accept weblish.
B. weblish can cause misunderstanding among people.
C. weblish will destroy the English labguage.
D. people should know something about weblish.
