It’s not easy being a teenager-
nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make y our child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say w ithout realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.

Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him shoul d he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s pri
vacy (隐
私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversions. Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole fa mily. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, t ell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off th e phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only free s up the line so that other family members can make and rece ive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节

In the past several years, air travel has become less appeal ing for some travellers. Tighter security regulations mean long er waits. Rising fuel prices can lead to more expensive tickets . Despite(尽
管) the inconveniences, air travel still has a number of advant ages over car, train and bus travel.
For a long distance, air travel is the fastest way to get to your destination, but even on shorter trips planes are much quicker . On a medium-

mile flight are significantly less than those from dying on a 10 0-
mile car ride. Car, bus and train travel are also more dangero
us than flying on a plane.
The cost of tickets for airplane, bus and train travel can vary g reatly. In many cases, however, air travel is the cheapest way . A trip from New York City to Detroit costs $86 by plane. This is comparable to slightly cheaper train tickets ($75) and bus ti ckets ($80) and cheaper than car travel ($115). On the longer New York City to Los Angeles trip, the advantages of air trave l shine: airplane tickets are more than 30 dollars less than trai n tickets, the cheapest alternative.

It’s not easy being a teenager-
nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or mis understood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you you’ll still be there for him whe n he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is u nwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the s ame time, remind him that you’re always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show r espect for your teenager’s privacy (隐
私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversions.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the fa mily’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节
制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with hi s own pocket money or a part-time job.

Dear Daisy,
Phew! I'm so glad the day is over. I'm really tired, but my first day at school went well.
First of all, we met outside the school building.I was very nervous because my primary schoo l only had 300 pupils but in the middle school there are about 1,300.What a difference! The ol der pupils are really big.I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.
The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names o ut to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs. Black. She took us to our classroom. It's on the 5th floor. We aren't allowed to use the lift! I couldn't believe it.
We spent all morning with Mrs.Black looking at our timetables.Everyone in the school had a different timetable.I'm worried that I'll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room. Lunchtime was OK. I had salad, fish and fruit, which was quite good, and then I went to play f ootball with some of the other boys. They were all friendly and I don't think it will take me long to make friends.
After lunch we started lessons. I had maths and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looked interesting.I have to do some homework tonight to find out how t he ancient Greek people lived, so I'm going to do an Internet search and look it up in the libra ry.
So far so good.I am quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I've got science. I hate s cience!
Yours,
Jason
