Everything was destroyed in the earthquake and the two children got into trouble. Thanks to their aunt who was not rich enough, they grew up but they lived a hard life. His sister was so sad that she became a nun (修女). After he finished middle school, he was introduced to an owner of a hotel and began to work there.
One day the young man fell to the ground while he was cleaning a window on the second floor. He was sent to the hospital and the doctor looked him over. One of his legs was broken and he had to be in hospital. He said to the nurse, “I’m a poor man, madam. Arrange a third-class ward (安排一个三等病房) for me, please.”
“Can’t anybody help you?”
“No, madam,” answered Dick. “I have only a sister. She’s nun and she’s poor, too.”
“I don’t think so,” the nurse said angrily. “Nuns usually marry God. And God is the richest in the world, you know!”

Colour helps you see things. But man and some monkeys and apes (猿) are the only mammals (哺乳动物) that can see colour. To any other mammal, such as the dog, the world looks like a black-and-white photo. Dogs hunt mainly by listening and sniffing (闻).
Like other animals, dogs see best when things move, The animals they hunt seem to know this.
A hunted rabbit or deer will “freeze”. Then the dog may not see it at all.
Birds can see colour. They need to, because they fly and need to find places to land. Colour helps them judge distance and shape. In this way they are able to catch bugs (昆虫) in the air or to light on branches.
Some birds see things even better than you do. The birds that eat bugs can see them from far away. And even a very young bird can see a hawk high in the sky. So sharp eyes and a sense of colour help birds find food and also help them find where their enemies are.

The Changjiang River is not the longest, the widest, or the most powerful river in the world. But in one sense it is the most important river, because it serves more people than any other river. In every way the Changjiang River is China’s life stream.
The Changjiang isn’t just a trade river, a highway along which goods are picked up and sent. It is an agricultural river as well. A lot of irrigation ditches (灌溉渠) go out from it to millions of tiny garden — size farms. There men and women work endlessly, with very old hand tools —planting , watering, fertilizing, weeding (除草), harvesting, raising the family’s food and raising the nation’s food.
It begins somewhere high in the place north of Tibet, running down from a three-mile height. It goes for hundreds of miles, shouting loud through valleys. Only in the last 1000 miles of its 3900-mile journey does the Changjiang River become the sunny and cheerful river.
55. In the opinion of the writer the Changjiang River is ______.
A.the longest river
B. the widest river
C. the most powerful river
D. the most important river

Some people don’t mind being fat. Other people can keep slim (苗条) without any effort. But a lot of people do put on too much weight and don’t like it. The question is, what can thy do about it?
Some believe exercise can be helpful. But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more. You might sweat out a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain, but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam.
A helpful way is food choosing. But what sort of food should you choose? Some believe that the less they eat, the slimmer they will be. They don’t eat anything until they become weak with hunger. Some stick to milk and bananas. You’ll find you need a lot of bananas, and unless you live where they grow, they aren’t cheap. Another says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs,
and apples with their skins on which are hard for your stomach to digest (消化), the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food.
For most of us these methods are too extreme (极端的). The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrates (糖类) that means not eating bread, potatoes, cakes, sugar, rice, and so on and eating anything else you like. It’s straight forward and often quite effective.
Still others like to be more scientific. They are calorie countries. They get a table, which tells them that, for example, 100 grams of roast let of lamb gives you 330 calories and a 50 gram helping of Yokshire pudding gives you 130 calories.

Tom Brennan was working in a Philadelphia office building when he noticed a black bag. The bat contained a book.
This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library Company of Philadelphia for a historical treasure —a 120-page diary kept 190 years ago by Deborah Logan, “a woman who knew everybody in her day,” James Green, the librarian told the magazine American Libraries. Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington, D. C. in the war of 1812. She describes President James Madison on horseback as “perfectly shaking with fear” during the troubled days. George Washington, she writes, mistook her for the wife of a French man, and praised her excellent English.
The adventure of the lost book began September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor (祖先) to the Library Company, which he and his wife considered to be the best home for the diary.
Green told American Libraries he had the diary in his possession “about five minutes” when
Luxmoore took it back because he had promised to show it to one other person. On returning to his hotel after showing the precious book to Green, Luxmoore was shocked to realize that he had left it in the taxi.
Without any delay, Green began calling every taxi company in the city, with no luck. “I’ve felt sick since then,” Lucmoore told reporters.
According to Green, no one has yet learned how the diary came to the office building. Tom Brennan received a reward of $1,000, Philadelphia gained another treasure for its history, and Luxmoore told reporters, “It’s wonderful news. I’m on high.”
