Space walking is an incredible experience that astronauts have the privilege of enjoying during their time in space. It involves leaving a spacecraft and moving around in the vacuum of space, making it one of the most dangerous activities in all of space exploration. Despite the risks, astronauts who have space walked have described it as one of the most amazing experiences of their lives.
The first space walk was conducted by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov in 1965. He was the first human to ever physically leave the confines of a spacecraft and move around in open space. He described the experience of floating in weightlessness as “like being on a different planet”. Subsequent efforts to explore space have seen astronauts venture further and further away from spacecrafts and stay outside for longer and longer periods of time.
Space walks are typically done with two astronauts tethered together. This ensures that should one astronaut
drift away, the other can act as a lifeline. The space suit worn by astronauts provides breathing air and protection against dangerous radiation levels in space. Astronauts can move around using thrusters built into their suits to propel themselves while they marvel at the beauty of Earth and the stars around them.
Every space walk has specific tasks which need to be performed. Tasks have included installing solar panels, repairing satellites, testing new equipment, and assembling large structures like the International Space Station. The experience of physically manipulating objects in outer space
also provides valuable information about how humans interact with machines in zero-gravity environments.
The feeling of unencumbered freedom in space is what draws many astronauts to want to space walk. Even though there are inherent dangers and difficulties associated with the activity, the thrill of being able to float freely in space is an indescribable experience. The opportunity to witness firsthand Earth’s vastness and cosmic beauty is something that can only be obtained through space walking.。
