Authorities at the best Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and
m any were late for morning classes or slept through them. “Now, a student doesn’t even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet,” said Prakash Gopalan, dean of Student Affairs. “The old dormitory culture of companionship and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion.”
IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of the seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students. Depressive and dysfunctional lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.
“Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbai’s 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their shells.” Gopalan said. But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated. “Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby (摇篮曲) to go to sleep.” said Rajiv, an electronics student.

A.Feel lonely and even suicidal. B.Perform well in studies.

C.There is no Internet access on the IIT campus ever since.
D.More students prefer listening to music to surfing the Internet.

23.(8分)Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy? In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.
The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their
guilt-proneness(内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given $1, which they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to $2.50. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.
Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting(互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they
do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.
Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whet her someone is trustworthy? “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests
co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others. 1、What may make others feel that we are reliable according to the text?
A.Our good qualities to help them out.
B.Our tendency to experience guilt.
C.Our kind attitude towards them.
D.Our team spirit in the game.
2、What may connect guilt with trustworthy behavior?
A.A sense of responsibility.
B.A feeling of disappointment.
C.The way one interacts with others.
D.The ability to tell right from wrong.
3、What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Ask B.Express
C.Describe D.Determine
4、How is the text organized and developed?
A.By providing background.
B.By making a lot of comparisons.
C.By answering the raised questions.
D.By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.
24.(8分)More than 135,000 UK drinkers will die from cancer caused by alcohol(酒精)by the year 2035, researchers say. Drinking too much will cause 7,100 cancer deaths a year by 2035, a rise of 13 percent on the present rate. A study by Sheffield University and Cancer Research UK shows that alcohol will cost the NHS(National Health Service) £53billion over the next ten years including £2 billion on cancer.
Although alcohol is known to cause many types of cancer including breast and throat most people don’t realize the relation between alcohol and cancer. A survey of 2,100 Britons by the researchers earlier this year found nine in ten did not associate drinking with cancer. The researchers used a computer model to work out the numbers of alcohol-related
cancer deaths, hospital admissions(入院)and total costs to NHS over the next 20 years.
The study shows that a fifth of men and 1 in 10 women have alcohol every day---and many of these are middle-aged and middle class. Researchers are very worried about this group as they believe cancer may be caused by drinking over long periods. The study shows that even if the expense stays as it is, alcohol-related cancer deaths will rise from 6,299 in 2015 to 7,097 in 2034. Alcohol will lead to 891, 299 hospital admissions, up from 802, 118 in 2015, and 65, 005 will be caused by cancer.
Earlier this year Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies studied carefully the alcohol guidelines(指导方针)for the first time in thirty years. She told people there was no safe level of drinking and advised them to drink no more than 14 units a week. But res earchers say this guidance isn’t enough and want the government to increase a little price per unit of alcohol.
1、What can we learn from the text?
A.Fewer people will die of cancer in the future
B.Alcohol will be the only cause of cancer deaths
C.More and more people will get rid of the habit of drinking
D.The computer model can offer researchers useful numbers
2、What does the underlined word “associate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Share B.Compare
C.Connect D.Replace
3、The researchers hope the government can __________.
A.raise the price of alcohol properly
B.remove the nation’s drinking habit
C.improve middle-aged persons’ income
D.provide fund for National Health Service
4、What may be the best title for the text?
A.People Having Alcohol Must Suffer from Cancer
B.All People Have Known Alcohol May Cause Cancer
C.Researchers Are Trying to Discover the New Causes of Cancer
D.Alcohol will Have Worse Effects on British People over the Coming Y ears

The $100 bill is the biggest bill in circulation. Although the federal government stopped printing them in 1945, currency notes of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 are still legal tender. Most of them have been snatched up by private collectors. Between December 18, 1934, and January 9,1935, the government put out $100,000 notes. However, they were only for transactions between Federal Reserve banks and never went out to the general public.
The Sahara is the world’s largest desert. Technically, Antarctica is. The U.S. Geologi cal Survey defines a desert as “dry land with a rainfall of usually less than ten inches per year that supports only sparse vegetation and a limited population of people and animals.” Antarctica averages only six inches of rain a year (mostly as snow) and is almost 5.5 million square miles. The Sahara is only 3.3 million square miles.
The green paste served with your sushi is wasabi. Wasabi is expensive and difficult to grow. Since it’s in the same family, most restaurants and food companies use horserad ish (with food coloring) instead. Real wasabi is more complex and sweeter than what you get in a typical Japanese restaurant.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Jack,
How have you been lately? In your last letter, you showed a considerable interest in the Chinese National Day, so
I'm writing to tell you what I did on that day this year.
First, I got up early, waiting anxiously to witness the magnificent Parade in front of the TV , which consisted of a wide range of processions of different themes. After lunch, my parents took me on a visit to the spectacular exhibition of the 70th anniversary at the National Museum demonstrating such impressive achievements made in the past few decades that I couldn't help feeling proud as a Chinese. Finally, towards the evening, the day was concluded with a wonderful banquet where all my immediate family gathered to feast and watch the variety shows.
In a nutshell, not only is the National Day a significant occasion for Chinese to reflect and bond, it also provides a perfect opportunity for family to embrace life and have fun. What about you? What do you guys do on Independence Day ? Looking forward to your earliest reply!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua.。
