Beautiful Mind
I always have the dream to dance like a beautiful ballerina twirling around
and around and hearing people applaud for me. When I was young, I would twirl in the fields of wildflowers that grew in my backyard. For hours I would dance as people were watching me. Reality woke me up when I heard a voice saying, "I don't know why you bother trying to dance. Ballerinas are pretty, slender little girls. Besides, you don't have the talent to ever be a ballerina." I remember how those words paralyzed (使瘫痪)every feeling in my body. I fell to the ground and wept for hours.
We lived in the country by a nearby lake and I would sometimes go there to hide. I enjoyed hanging around by the water. I would sit there for hours and stare at my reflection. There I was, looked nothing like a pretty ballerina dancer. Reflections don't lie. Once the waves would come, my reflection was gone, washed away just like my dream. I sat there staring at the water, hoping that my reflection would reappear and be different. As I grew older, I began to realize that the dream I had was never cared for, so it slowly died. It's not that I wanted it to die, but I allow it to die the day I started listening to the words, "You can't do it." When I eventually woke up from many years of dreaming, I realized that you can't just keep dancing in the wildflowers, you have to move on to the stage. I still go to the lake sometimes and sit there. Looking at my reflection is different now too. When I was young, I looked at how others saw me, now that I am older and
wiser; I look at how God sees me.

Teacher's Prayer
I want to teach my students how to live this life on earth,
To face its struggle and its strife and improve their worth.
Not just the lesson in a book or how the rivers flow,
But how to choose the proper path wherever they may go.
To understand eternal truth and know the right from wrong,
And gather all the beauty of a flower and a song.
For if I help the world to grow in wisdom and in grace,
Then, I shall feel that I have won and I have filled my place.
And so I ask my guidance, God, that I may do my part,
For character and confidence and happiness of heart.

Beautiful mind
The first time I saw Jim Wooten, I really understand him. He was a great reporter, the best there, on television, and the true heir (继承者) of Ed Murrow. He was reporting on the genocide (种族灭绝) in Rwanda (卢旺达). He had been there for several days, and there had been one heartbreaking moment when the camera had shown all of the children who were dying, already infected by terrible diseases and starving to death now. Jim ended his piece by saying that when he got home, the first thing he was going to do was to put his arms around his own children. I realized then that he was different, that he did not fall into any of the modern television-news traps, that he was not giving us any of soulless news, or even worse, that awful, artificial television-journalist empathy. Instead, I was watching a real reporter with a gift for both words and slight differences.
Then I read his latest book, We Are All the Same , about his friendship with Xolani Nkosi, a South African boy who became the international spokesman for AIDS. In one sense it’s the story of a most unlikely friendship between Wooten and a tiny black child who was ten years old and already dying of AIDS. It is also a book about a great teacher and his student. But the teacher —the one with real wisdom and understanding about life —is the little boy, not the journalist . And, finally, it’s a love story about Gail Johnson, Nkosi’s white adoptive mother (养母) who does her best to save the boy, and their love for each other. In the end, reading it is more a
religious experience than a literary one.

The Music Within
Life...What is it?
See it in the colors of autumn,
A gentle snowfall in winter,
A sudden shower in spring,
The radiance of a summer day.
Behold it in the laughter Of the young and the old. Know of it in a surge of hope,
The blessings that are bountiful.
What is life?
It is joy, awareness,
And the music within.

也隐匿在孩子们天真的嬉戏中。

它汹涌在人们的希望里,
它荡漾在美好的祝福中,
生命是什么?
是欢乐,是领悟,
是心灵深处的音乐。

Everybody has the great need for affirmation(肯定), especially the little child. Here is my story, and actually, it is a story of something my son did with my granddaughter that shows the importance of affirmation.
My son has two daughters. One is fi ve and the other is in the “terrible twos”. When a grandmother says this child is in the “terrible twos”, believe me, she is!
For several years, my son has taken the older girl out for a “date” time, but he had never taken the two-year-old until recently. On his first “date” with the younger one, he took her out to breakfast at a local fast breakfast restaurant.
They had just got their pancakes and my son decided it would be a good time to tell this child how much he loved and appreciated her.
“Jenny,” my son said, “I want you to know how much I love you, and how special you a re to Mom and me. We have prayed for you for years, and now you’ve been such a wonderful girl, we couldn’t be more proud of you.”
Once my son had said all this, he reached over for his fork to begin eating…but he never got the fork to his mouth. His daughter reached out her little hand and laid it o n his father’s . His eyes went to hers, and in a soft, pleading(恳求)voice she said, “Longer, Daddy, longer…”
My son put down his fork and continued to tell her some more reasons and ways they loved and appreciated her, and then he again reached for his fork. A second time…and a third…and a fourth time he heard the words, “Longer, Daddy, longer…”
My son di dn’t get much to eat that morning, but his daughter got the emotional nourishment(营养)she needed so much. In fact, a few days later, she ran up to her mother and said, “I’m a really special daughter, Mommy. Daddy told me so.”

Beautiful mind
Alone at the dinning room table, surrounded by a darkened house, I sat in tears.
As a recently divorced(离婚)man with his children, I was determined to give my children as normal and stable a home life as possible. I put on a happy face for them. I kept their activities as close to how they had been as I could.
Sitting at the dinning room table, I knew that this was the first time since I came home from work that I’d been able to just sit down. I had cooked and served and encouraged the two little ones to eat. I had done the dishes while responding to their many requests for attention. The bath, the stories, the nighttime singing, and now, at long last, there is a short moment for myself. The silence was a relief for the moment.
Then it all crowded in on me: the hard work, the weight of the responsibility, the worry about bills.I wasn’t sure I could pay that month, th e endless details of running a house, and loneliness.I felt as though I were at the bottom of a great sea of loneliness. Unexpectedly, tears came into my eyes. I sat there, silently sobbing(啜泣).
Just then, a pair of little arms went around my waist I looked down into my five-year-old son’s tender face.
I was embarrassed to be seen crying by my son. “I’m sorry, Ethan, I didn’t know you were still awake. I didn’t mean to cry. I’m sorry. I’m jus t a little sad tonight.”
“It’s okay, Daddy. It’s okay to cry because you’re just a person.”
I can’t express how happy he made me. This little boy gave me permission to cry . He seemed to be saying that I didn’t always have to be strong, that it was sometimes possible to allow myself to feel weak and let out my feelings.
He crept(爬)onto my lap and we hugged and talked for a while, and I took him back up to his bed. Somehow, it was possible for me to get to sleep that night, too. Thank you, my son.

The slogan(口号)that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas has been going strong for 27 years. Dogs and cats have been popular Christmas gifts in the UK for decades. But some people still haven’t quite got the message.
England’s Dogs Trust chairman Baldwin dream t up the words all those years ago. She says her slogan still hold reasonable. Some 105,000 dogs were rounded up by local governments last year because they had been deserted(遗弃). Many of them were deserted shortly after the festival.
Perhaps adults have in mind the image in mind of a puppy(幼犬)falling around in the discarded(舍弃的)gift wrapping when they hand over the money at a pet shop. Maybe they’re just trying to make their children happy.
However, the happiness sadly goes away in too many cases. The main reason according to owners handing their dogs over to the Dogs Trust is that the dog needs more attention than they can give. Behavioral problems and changing home are also reasons given.
But Eleanor Silk, the Trust’s director says, “It’s often fo ur or five months after Christmas, in early summer, when owners find that the dog has got too big and energetic, or it hasn’t been trained properly and has become a problem in the home.”
In any case, buyers are told that if they are serious about getting a puppy as a pet, Christmas is not the time to do it. Puppies need to get used to their new surroundings, to be introduced to routine(常规), and to be looked after like small children. It’s hard to meet any of these needs at Christmas. What’s more, pulling a puppy out of a Chirstmas stocking sends the wrong message to children: it suggests children to think of the puppy as a toy, rather than a responsibility.

English poem
If I could save time in a bottle
the first thing that I'd like to do
is to save every day until eternity passes away
just to spend them with you
If I could make days last forever
if words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
again I would spend them with you

Beautiful mind
I just returned from a trip to New Jersey. On the way back, I was stopped by a serious accident. After being told by the policeman that we would be sitting there for hours, I, as well as other truck drivers, got out of the truck to have a rest. Soon we were talking with an old couple. I said that if I had known about this, I would have bought something to drink, for I was becoming thirsty. The lady, Anna, said that they had plenty of water and sodas in the cooler in their truck and offered everyone something to drink. While she was back there, she said that she also had plenty of food, and asked if we would like a sandwich.
After some urging(催促)from Joe, the man, we each agreed to a sandwich. When she finished making the sandwiches, I saw a Mississippi license(执照)plate on the truck. I asked what part of Mississippi they were from. Joe said Biloxi. Knowing that Biloxi had been damaged by Hurricane
Katrina, I asked if they had had any damage. Joe said that they had lost almost everything. All they had was in the truck.
All of us drivers tried unsuccessfully to pay them for their drinks and sandwiches. Joe said that their son was living around Harrisonburg, Virginia and they were going to start all over there. Starting over at their age, we know, would not be easy.
These wonderful people lost practically they owned and still would not accept any money for their food and drinks. Joe said that it was better to give than to receive.

日积月累
1.I said that if I had known about this, I would have bought something to drink,我说如果我早知道这事我会带点喝的东西。

这是一个表示与过去事实相反的虚拟条件,从句的动词用的是过去完成时,而主句则由would/should/could和现在完成时构成。

2. After some urging(催促)from Joe, the man, we each agreed to a sandwich.在乔的再三催促下,我们每人同意吃了一个三明治。

urge 可不止“催促”一种用法,看看下面的句子吧!

He urged on us the necessity of patience.他对我们力言忍耐是必要的。

Lust of money urged him to the risky task.金钱的诱惑驱策他去做冒险的工作。
