Like many young people, I dreamed of growing up and becoming a successful writer one day. My first part-time job came when I was 18 years old. I was working in a paint factory. Because of the terrible smell of paint, it became normal for me to temporarily pass out during my lunch hour.
All of my spare time was spent writing and sending stories to any publisher that would read them, dreaming that one day losing consciousness while eating my ham sandwiches would no longer be a part of my daily routine.
I discovered content mills, where a writer could devote his time to writing soul-destroying online copy. It provided a little pay, but I wouldn’t faint(昏厥). So, I quit my day job. But it is difficult to work from home. At times, I would lose all passion for writing 500 words about an advertisement for a bed for a few pounds, but the terrible smell of paint reminded me to get back to writing.
Several months later, the money got better. I was given a job writing for one of the largest entertainment websites in the world. The job was simple: I complained about everything that was wrong with society and they paid me? 50 for each article. A guy from the website asked if I’d be interested in leaving my small town life to move to the big city of Manchester to become a professional writer for them. I accepted.
After a pretty successful year, I was offered a promotion. Just 18 months earlier, I was suffering from the smell of paint on a daily basis and now I was managing a team of nine writers.

When the company was small, Google cared a lot about getting kids from Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. But Laszlo Bock, Google's former Senior Vice President of People Operations, said it was the "wrong" hiring strategy. Experience has taught him that there are exceptional kids at many other places, from state schools in California to those in New York. "What we find is that the best people from places like these are just as good if not better as anybody you can get from any Ivy
League school," said Bock, who authored a book titled "Work Rules!"
So what else does Google not care about:
Grades: Google's data shows that grades predict performance for the first two years of a career, but do not matter after that.
Brain-teasers: Gone are interview questions such as: Why are manhole covers (井盖) round? How many golf balls can fit in a school bus? "Our research tells us those questions are a waste of time," Bock said. "They're a really coachable skill. The more you practice, the better you get at it."
Here's what Google does care about:
Problem solvers: Your cognitive (认知的) ability, or how well you solve problems.
Leaders: The idea is not whether you were president of the student body or vice president of a bank, but rather "When you see a problem, do you step in and help solve it?" and then critically, "Are you willing to let somebody else take over, and make room for somebody else? Are you willing to give up power?"
Googleyness: That's what Google calls its cultural fit. It's not "Are you like us?" Bock said. "We actually look for people who are different, because diversity gives us great ideas."
"What's most important is that people are intellectually humble, willing to admit when they're wrong, and care about the environment around them ...because we want people who think like owners not employees," Bock said.
24. What does Bock mean in Paragraph 1?
A .People from state schools can be as good.
B .Google prefers kids from Ivy League schools.
C .Hiring is a hard job for Google.
D .State schools are worse than Ivy League ones.
25. Who is a qualified leader according to Google?
A . One eager for power.
B . One solving problems well.
C . One willing to step aside.
D . One operating an organization.
26. What is Googleyness?
A .Being unique
B .Being adaptable
C .Being qualified
D .Being loyal

A recent study of ancient and modern elephants has come up with the conclusion which comes as a surprise that the African elephant is divided into two distinct (不同的) species.
The discovery was made by researchers at York and Harvard Universities when they were examining the genetic relationship between the ancient woolly mammoth and mastodon to modern elephants-the Asian elephant, African forest elephant, and African savanna elephant.
Once they obtained DNA sequences (序列) from two fossils (化石), mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths.
The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant have been distinct species for several million years. The divergence of the two species took place around the time of the divergence of Asian elephants and woolly mammoths. This result amazed all the scientists.
There has long been debate in the scientific community that the two might be separate species, but this is the most convincing scientific evidence so far that they are indeed different species.
Previously, many naturalists believed that African savanna elephants and African
forest elephants were two populations of the same species, despite the elephants' significant size differences. The savanna elephant has an average shoulder height of 3.5 metres while the forest elephant has an average shoulder height of 2.5 metres. The savanna elephant weighs between six and seven tons, roughly double the weight of the forest elephant. But the fact that they look so different does not necessarily mean they are different species. However the proof lay in the analysis of the DNA.
Alfred Roca, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, said, "We now have to treat the forest and savanna elephants as two different units for conservation purposes. Since 1950, all African elephants have been conserved as one species. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very distinctive animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority(优先) for conservation purposes."
27. One of the fossils studied by the researchers is that of________.
A. the Asian elephant
B. the forest elephant
C. the savanna elephant
D. the mastodon elephant
28. The underlined word "divergence" in Paragraph 4 means "________".
A. evolution
B. exhibition
C. separation
D. examination
29. What are Alfred Roca's words mainly about?
A. The conservation of African elephants.
B. The purpose of studying African elephants.
C. The way to divide African elephants into two units.
D. The reason for the distinction of African elephants.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage ?
A.Naturalists’ Beliefs about Elephant
B. Amazing Experiments about Elephants
C. An Unexpected Finding about Elephants
D. A Long Scientific Debate about Elephants

Why Walking Your Dog Is Great Exercise
Having trouble sticking to an exercise program? Research shows that dogs are actually nature's perfect personal trainers-loyal, hard-working, energetic and enthusiastic. Your friends may skip an exercise session because of appointments, extra chores or bad weather. 31 Is dog walking really effective exercise? Many people are becoming interested in exercise to help lose excess weight. 32 Dog owner-ship and obesity were evaluated in Seattle, Wash., and Baltimore, Md., in a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine in September 2008.Dog owners who reported walking their dogs were almost 25 percent less likely to be obese than people without dogs.
What are the benefits of regular exercise? Dr.Joanna Kruk reviewed medical literature describing the health benefits of exercise. Her research showed that the risk of developing a number of serious health problems is reduced by physical activity and exercise.
33 It's easy to forget about healthy walking plans, so set the stage for a successful program: Establish a walking schedule; plan to walk 30 minutes total each day. This might include a 10-minute neighborhood walk in the morning and a 20-minute romp at the dog park after work. Or maybe three 10-minule walks or one 30-minute walk fit in better with your day.
If dog walking is "scheduled" each day, you'll feel more responsible for sticking with your program. 34 Most importantly, daily walking your dog will keep it fit and give it an
opportunity to utilize their senses while also engaging their mind.
So, grab a leash , whistle to the pup, and go for a walk every day! Take action! 35
A. Plan for success.
B. Track your progress.
C. This will reinforce your good behavior.
D. Dog walking is a great way to start a healthy lifestyle program.
E. However, dogs never give you an excuse to delay exercising.
F. Plus, your dog will also get used to the routine and remind you when "it's time"!
G. Obesity is affecting about one in every three to four adults in the United States and Europe.

And now I’d like to share a moment with you that brings us to one of Aesop's fables called "The Tortoise and the Hare." As in many fables, the animals are given human personality traits. The hare has a loud, bragging personality and seems overconfident and likes showing off . Tortoise is focused. In "The Tortoise and The Hare" these two animals race each other! But now
that we know they also have human personalities, what will happen? Let's find out. Here is the Learning English version of "The Tortoise and the Hare."
One day, Tortoise was walking through the woods. She had business to take care of. So, she walked through the forest with her usual determination. When Tortoise passed by Hare, he was standing against a fence post. She simply nodded her head and walked on … very slowly.
HARE: Hey, Tortoise. Where are you going?
TORTOISE: I have some important business to take care of.
Hare found this very funny. He did not want to waste the chance to make fun of Tortoise for being so slow.
HARE: If it's so important -- why don't you hurry? You'll never get anything done walking like that.
TORTOISE: Like what?
HARE: Slowly, you fool!
Tortoise lifted her head slowly and answered.
TORTOISE: I will take care of my business and I will get it done sooner than you think.
HARE: Yeah, I doubt that! Look at your slow feet! They are no match for my fast feet. Watch me run!
Hare ran around and around in circles. He was indeed very fast.
HARE: See? I told you I was fast.
TORTOISE: Yes, you are very fast. And you are very confident in your speed. I have an idea -- why don't we run a race?
HARE: A race? Between me … and you? Ha ha ha! The idea of running a race with Tortoise was so funny to Hare that he laughed and laughed. But finally, he agreed. He wanted to embarrass Tortoise for even having the nerve to challenge him.
HARE: You have some nerve challenging me. Sure! I’ll race you!
TORTOISE: Great. We will meet back here tomorrow at this time. Don't be late …
So, the next day, “Tortoise! Hare! You will start the race on my whistle.” “On your mark!”And off they went! After only a short time, Hare was very far in front of Tortoise. Now, Hare, being a petty animal, did not just want to win. He wanted the Tortoise to feel foolish. So, he started running backward and yelled insults at her.
HARE: You are so far behind me! You look really small! How does it feel to be a loser? Then Hare ran even further ahead of Tortoise. As he ran, he said to himself: “How dare that Tortoise thinks she can beat me? I am one of the fastest animals in these woods. You know, I'm not just going to beat her. I'm goin g to teach her a lesson.” So, he stopped. He was going to wait until the Tortoise caught up with him,and then teased her some more.” I'll just stay here under this tree and rest a bit. I'm so fast that I'll be able to beat Tortoise and take a sleep!”

续写参考答案
Tortoise just kept going -- slowly but steadily. She said to herself: “I am just going to keep my eyes on the destination. Onward I go!”Some time later , Tortoise came to where Hare was sleeping. Hare slept on peacefully as Tortoise passed by him quietly. In his dream he won the race and all the other animals crowd him with congratulations on his success while tortoise slipped away in secret . However, when Hare eventually awoke, Tortoise was near the finish line. Seeing what happened, he started to run as fast as possible!
Hare tried but in vain to catch up with Tortoise in time. He felt embarrassed and regretful. Perhaps just at the beginning of the race, he was doomed to be a failure and now he came to understand that it was “slow but steady” that wins the race" , which means that if you set a goal for yourself and keep working toward it, you will make it. To accomplish that goal, however, you must neither waste time on mindless or meaningless things, nor lose focus. Sometimes in life, the person who succeeds is not the ablest one but the most focused one with strong determination. Also, if you waste your time bragging and showing off , as Hare did –you might as well fail to
reach your goal.。
