It may be safer to make a salad on your toilet seat than your kitchen cutting board.
That’s because there is 200 time s more germs (细菌) on your cutting board, says Chuck Gerba, a world-famous germ expert at the University of Arizona, US.
When looking at the amount of germs in an average home, Gerba said, researchers have found that the place with the most germs is the kitchen sponge (海绵). “The sponge is a happy home for germs. It’s wet and it’s sucking up food all of the time,” he said. He added that you could squeeze (挤压) as much as 10 million germs out of one sponge without any difficulty.
Gerba explained that there is a smaller amount of germs inside a home’s toilet bowl after a person flushes (冲洗) than there is in a kitchen sink (水槽).
“That’s why dogs drink out of the toilet. They’re a lot smarter than you think,” he joked.
He said people usually clean their bathroom with cleaning products because they are afraid of getting diseases, but they don’t clean the kitchens with the same effort. Better cleaning is also needed in the laundry room. He explained that most people only wash their laundry for a short amount of time with cold water. That makes it possible for germs to survive through the wash.

A. Dogs drink out of the toilet because they’re smarter.
B. People usually clean the kitchens with cleaning products.

Having Multiple Sclerosis (MS, 多发性硬化症) can be difficult, but we can face it in a positive way.
Because of my MS, my left hand can’t work. People think I must feel sad, but I’m not. Instead, I try something and I choose to write which is meaning to me. I type with my right hand and one finger with my left. I’m the fastest six-fingered female typist you would ever meet.
I wouldn’t consider MS a gift, but it has changed me. I believe that I’m more compassionate ( 有同情心的) and understanding. I make a great effort to never judge others. When I see someone who is less fortune than me, I tell myself that I’m lucky.
I just have a chronic (慢性的) disease.
If you think having MS will alter your life, you are correct. But it doesn’t have to be all bad. When you take a different path in the woods, it leads you to somewhere that you couldn’t have found any other way. The interesting thing now is to see where it leads you. Will you experience something that you have never experienced before? Who will you meet? What will you accomplish?
Your life may look different than the one you imagined for yourself, but it may also end up being more beautiful than you ever imagined. When your son has made mistakes, instead of being angry and blaming him, use your wisdom to “trick” your son and pull him closer to you for a hug. Everyone’s “something” might be the greatest gift others will never received.
47. We infer if someone suffers MS, they may .
A. be unable to see clearly
B. have difficulty in speaking
C. have difficulty in thinking
D. be unable to use some parts of his body
48. Why did the writer start to write?
A. because she wanted to become a very fast typist.
B. because she wanted to encourage others
C. because she thought writing was meaningful to her.
D. because she didn’t want others to think she was sad.
49. After the writer suffered from MS, she .
A. became more understanding than before
B. consider her disease a gift
C. wasn’t as compassionate as before
D. liked judging other people
50. The underlined word “alter” in paragraph 4 means “ .”
A. change
B. improve
C. replace
D. reward

Ask a young person in the street who the greatest American film director is, and you may get the answer Steven Spielberg. He has certainly made more successful films than any other director in the west.
Spielberg was born in the state of Ohio, America, in 1946. He showed that he had unusual abilities when he was very young, completing his first 15-minute home movie at the age of 13. When he was 16 he made a 135-minute home movie called Firelight. This was shown at a local cinema and made $100.
At the age of 24, Spielberg made a 26-minute film called Amblin. A Hollywood film studio liked it and employed Spielberg to make a full-length film. This film, Sugarland Express, ma de in 1974, had some success. Spielberg’s next film was Jaws, a film about a shark that ate people. This was one of the most successful films of all time. Other wonderful films followed: E.T. — The Extra Terrestrial (1982), The Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jurassic Park(a film about dinosaurs), and Schindler’s List. For the last film Spielberg won an Oscar, Hollywood’s highest prize.
